Which Route Should I Go On (DUB-HKG)?

Sat Apr 08, 2006 3:04 am

I was thinking of doing a trip to HKG later this year. I have a choice between going with Aer Lingus EI/Emirates EK and Air France AF.

Air France AF is the cheaper one @ €885 inc tax
DUB-CDG (BAe-142)
CDG-HKG (A332)
HKG-CDG (B772ER)
CDG-DUB (BAe-142)

Aer Lingus/ Emirates EK costs €19 more @ €904 inc tax
DUB-BHX (A320)
BHX-DXB (B773ER)
DXB-BKK (B773)
BKK-HKG (B772)
HKG-BKK (A332)
BKK-DXB (A332)
DXB-BHX (B773ER)
BHX-DUB (A320)

For only €19 euro extra on EI/EK I get 4 more flights compared to AF.

The travel time on AF is around 5-10 hours quicker than EI/EK.

Transferring at CDG is crap and I don't like the airport staff.

Is transferring at BHX and DXB any better?

If I fly BHX-DXB-BKK-HKG. Do they serve food on each sector of the journey?

So would it be more value for money if I fly Aer Lingus EI/Emirates EK for paying €19 more?

I love multiple connections and flying as much as the next guy, but remember that sometimes those connections leave you sleeping on airport floors.  Smile

And I agree with your dislike of CDG.... but...

BKK's nothing with nothing (I'm there every month and there's nothing special about the airport). You won't see a whole lot that's interesting there. DXB might be interesting to walk through, that's for sure, but does the connection give you any time to do so?

In short, you have to weigh the risk of arriving, say, a day late, and the interest in seeing an airport, against all the extra travel time.

Also, me personally, I'd have to have to scrunch up my shoulders the whole time on a 3-4-3 EK 777, if that's what they are flying on those routes.

Why not fly Aer Lingus DUB-DXB and then connect with Emirates to HKG but I have no idea of costs.

Between those options go with AF and treat yourself to a lovely meal in Hong Kong with the 178 HKD saved. You'll also save yourself the pain of 3-4-3 in a 777 and you'll arrive sooner. Plus AF 777s have the GE-90s, which are a treat in themselves and you still get a A330 ride to boot.

no offence, but from my freinds and familys experience of EK and AF, they are both a load of crap! Aer lingus are supposidly ment to be very good, so fly the EI/EK route, so you get to experience a good airline  Wink

Short haul is very good but long haul could do with some help. If you think about flying EI DUB-DXB it's only €179 and connection with EK is easy enough.

My answer is yes and you will have more fun on all those flights.

Quoting Aer Lingus (Thread starter):
DXB-BKK (B773)
BKK-HKG (B772)

How come that this is served by different types? isn't it the same EK aircraft that continues from BKK to HKG? Or do EK have rights to fly BKK-HKG without commencing in DXB?

If you want to fly the 773ER, you also have the option with AF, as it is used daily on CDG-HKG.
Last flight: SAW-CPH on H9 on 02/11/09 - Next Flights: 23/12/09 CPH-AAL on QI, 30/12/09 CPH-LHR on SK, 19/01/10 CPH-CDG-

I would do the AF itinerary, but not before checking lots of other airlines first. AF is supposed to have great service, and the aircraft on this itinerary are all very appealing (at least to me). The other routing is just too many connections. I would do that one, if you could just eliminate BKK...

Only 3-4-3 I know of is a 747 - 777's are either 2-5-2 or 3-3-3, unless you're a European charter company squeezing in an extra seat!

Well all of Ek's 777's are in 3-4-3 configuration, believe it or not.

The sooner DUB gets long-haul asian routes, the better, so they don't have to put up with all of this transfer crap in LHR/CDG/AMS.

You've been on this website over a year and you have been completely oblivious to the EK 777 10-Abreast threads?

Passengers flying from DUB can transfer at DXB. Aer Lingus just started the route last week. It's easier at DXB rather than LHR or CDG.

Actually, I've been on this website for several years, but this truly is the first I've ever heard of EK's squeeze!!  eyepopping
