Do You Prefer Bulkhead Or Non-bulkhead?

Thu Apr 13, 2006 4:37 pm

There are those who insist that the bulkhead has more legroom.

There are those who perceive that the bulhead has limited legroom (because there is no seat under which to stretch your legs).

There are those who prefer the bulkhead so they can put there feet up against the wall.

There are those who think that it is bad manner to put feet up on the wall.

What do folks here like?

I'm one of those people. Just give me a normal window seat any day, because i like to have my bag at my feet. I've only used the overhead bins twice and that was both on F70s to/from AMS. Although i wasn't complaining when me and a friend got given exit seats on a UA 767 from ORD to LAX last year!

I always avoid bulkheads. The few times I have flown in a bulkhead row, I felt boxed in.

Same here, I hate it when the guy who sits in front of me reclines his seat.

Hmm, my only bulkhead experience was sitting in 1A on a CRJ. Therefore I hate them. Plus I greatly prefer underseat storage. I don't like reclining passengers, and there are going to be tons of them on my red-eye flight tonight, but I have an exit row seat and the guy in front of me can't recline.  devil

What I don't get is those people who demand a bulkhead because they suffer from terrible claustrophobia and need (as in their life depends upon it) the extra space. I guess sitting in front of a wall is the perfect antidote.

Don't even get me started on how much I absolutely despise bulkheads.
I hate it how they "confiscate" your bags so you can't access them.
I feel very claustrophobic in a bulkhead.
But by far, the absolute worst part of the whole thing is,
YOU CAN'T SEE THE WING!  hissyfit
You miss all the action, and worse yet, you need to
strain your neck to see just the tip. This results in the worst
neck and pain ever the next day.
I love wings, and flaps, and I don't think you can get the
full experience from a bulkhead. I know I haven't.  crying

Interesting, when I fly domestically, I rarely run into an actual bulkhead. Like on all domestic NW flights, the "bulkhead" is just a curtain separating the tops of the seats in F/C from coach. There still is a seat infront of row 5. So you lose neither leg room nor underneath seat room.

I avoid bulkheads with a passion - That's where they put babies!!!
Also I prefer to be down the back of a cabin.

Yes, yes I forgot to add THAT.
Trust me you DO NOT want to be the person who put me in the bulkhead.  Wink
Unfortunately when you fly as an unaccompanied minor, you often
have no control over such things. I've decided never doing that again.

I dislike bulkhead seats in Y for the following reasons:

No baggage storage.
Babies.
Lack of legroom.
I hate staring at a wall.
The armrests are not movable due to the tray tables being stored in them.

Usually the bulkhead rows in F/C are better unless you are on a UA 737 or 757. Row 1 on the right side has NO legroom.

Well, on XJ Avros, the bulkhead means a bunch of legroom AND an F legrest... what could be better?

I always select a seat at the bulkhead, the AFT bulkhead.  Smile

Amen to that! I was on a 757 redeye, SJC-ORD a few years ago when a woman seated in 1D wanted to sit with her teenage son, who was seated next to me. Since we were all sa's anyway, I switched with her. BIG MISTAKE! Didn't realize how little legspace there is on the rt side, compared to the left. I'll NEVER do that again......well,...maybe if there's a Playboy model in 1C, lol.
Not as easy as originally perceived

I like bulkheads, only if my ptv screen folds out, as on EK's A330-200 and BI's B767-300ER.

Perfectly said! Either bulkhead or on E145's Row 12

Another reason to avoid bulkhead seats when you fly on SAA 346s: airbags in the seatbelts!

I've only flown in Y sitting at a bulkhead once.

I decided to give the bulkhead a trying on a return LGW-MCO VS flight and it made a world of difference.. quite a bit more legroom and room to stretch out. It's always good to have the armrest traytable (and PTV), aswell.

Have only experienced it once, on a 10 hour flight. At first I thought the missing legroom under the seat in front of me was annoying, but I got used to it very fast. Had a great view of the A340 hairdryers. I kinda like the fold out PTV. It's easier to watch when leaning against the wall, as you can flip them horisontally as well. And for those of us who have a can of beer, a bottle of wine or a drink on the tray table for the entire flight, it's great that you can flip the tray to half size

I have thought of the baby issue. Why would they place babies at the frontrow Y-class bulkhead, right behind C class pax? It seems to be a bad service for the premium paying pax.

edit: typo

because the bassinets attach to the bulkhead wall in front of the seat.

That would be a waste of perfectly good space that could be used for high yield cargo revenue for the airlines.... Wink
