Cheap-looking Liveries

Mon Apr 17, 2006 3:38 am

It seems as though some airlines just put the smallest amount of time possible into thinking up a livery. The following airlines have some of the cheapest looking liveries out there:

And the cheapest livery of all time:

So what other airlines out there have really cheap-looking liveries?

The cheapest? American Airlines, I think. No paint at all. Their paintshop must be like a barber for the bald - "only polishing, please".

IMHO, everything Eurowhite looks cheap to me. "Start of with a white basecoat, add a bit of paint to the tail so that we actually have identity, and write our name on the fuselage, and pronto, we're done."
It all looks just too similar, be it DL, AF, LH, AC(old), or all the others.

In terms of creativity, the cheapest must be Mexicana.
IMHO The "new" livery is a huge step back.

I find that the new TP livery looks really cheap. As if unfinished or temporary. Something like a white wall with placards quickly glued on it to let know for which airline the aircraft is flying for...
Then DL has completely focused on the tail, forgetting the rest of the aircraft. And WO livery looks as boring as possible, but in that case it may make some sense as they often lease out their fleet. But compared to the red, orange and gold livery of the 70s & 80s, its like day & night!

How about Transavia latest?

Aer Lingus had a horrible one a few years ago! It was designed to promote the website but many people thought it was going to replace the shamrock and be placed on the A330, luckily it was only placed on the ageing 737s.

Hi!

Yes, yes TAP livery is really "cheap".....we save a lot of money with that livery....and that's why TAP came two years in row with profit....and regarding "the unfinished and temporary"....well it's gonna be "temporary" for at least the next 15 years.....so guys you better get used to it!!! And by the way, it says TAP...and everybody in the world knows well TAP so.....

Finnair's is pretty bland.............

But its quite hard to defeat the utter monotony of Air France's.

Actually, getting a plane to that shiny polished look is a lot harder than one would think. AA's livery is not just bare metal that has buffed up. Several layers of special paint have to applied before the plane is maticulusly polished to a shine. I'm sure someone else can explain this process better than I can. I pity the painters who have to paint AA's planes, it's a tough process.

Air Scandic is fantastic!!!!
What does it cost to paint an airplane?
50,000 Euro??
(Guessing)

And still they won't pay a graphic designer 10% of that in order to come up with a livvery that works!

How's that for creating confidence in management!

Guys in the paint shop must have puked!

Another example of MS-paint style is

(Tail is OK - but LOOK at the logo and website typing!!!)

I'm not saying you can't have low budgets.
Emirates is Eurowhite with a few "stickers" and still look great.

You can do cool things on a less-is-more scale. But if I am to trust an airlines management in making the right decisions, i trust they use people who know their job for ALL work. From MX to graphic design.
With graphic design the decision to use the boss daughter is obvious from miles away.

This one is not yet a reality, but probably now with all the money they have just raised recently. I can't post the picture, but it is the first thing you see on their site. Compared to this, Euro-white is not all cheap looking. Looks like one of those stores you buy fireworks at.

I think that is one of the few things that almost all A.net members can agree on. AF is desperate need of a new livery. Although their current livery isn't "ugly" (depending on how you define "ugly"), it certainly is...well...boring. It lacks all forms of distinctiveness. AF doesn't need anything fancy, but some cheat-lines or something would be nice. They may also want to give their planes a wash a bit more often too.

You're probably right and even if it'd be only polishing it would be an expensive one. But as a matter of fact, I suppose all typical liveries are comparable in terms of painting price, so "cheap livery" is rather something either "made on a knee" as we say in Poland, or a cheap artistic effect.

And AA's livery is for me this last option. Maybe it's difference between Europe and America, but I see AA painting as something based on "the more it blinks, the prettiest it is". The same reasoning you can find when people buy tons of chrome to be put on their cars. They consider those cars beautiful and, ROTFL, prestigeous.

Wow! Air Scandic is even worse than Santa Barbara's cursive and upward-leaning lettering.

Another cheap-looking livery, probably created on MS paint as well:

Looks like they ran out of yellow paint for the nose. apart from that the livery isn't too bad although they do with a better tail design

The EL AL livery looks terribly cheap...like a small low-cost carrier....and with the "new" logo they are going to introduce...it will look even cheaper  Sad

Indeed, until now they had at least still their great logo...
I bitterly miss the livery that should never have been changed (repetition...)

Hi OwlEye
The reason I found their livery cheap is the blue and yellow bits on the plane. I just do not like this big word on yellow thing on the tail and the overall branding makes me feel that their livery is cheap. Sometimes whether a livery is good or not also depends on the customers' satisfaction to the company, it is just a chain of reaction.

That's more than true, William. Sometimes I have to convince a customer to re-concider the design he had first in mind. The customer is king. But when a customer is heading for a terribly looking and unbalanced livery design which does not reflect the quality my company is standing for I shall advice my customer. In the worst scenario I might discontinue the business relationship (which not yet has happened).

Hello again OwlEye

I am glad that you take my point - not trying to start a war or whatever, Ryanair really needs to improve their service quality in order to gain some better 'comments' from its customers. I hope they will try to learn from peoples responses.

I cannot judge about their service quality as I never flew Ryanair. But for the aircraft paint design I can say that in my opinion the Ryanair livery looks right for an LCC. Thanks for the comment.
