Your First International Destination?

Sat Apr 22, 2006 12:59 pm

Whether your were a passenger or crew what place on this huge Planet was your first International destination and how much did you enjoy it? I'm deciding my first International. Its either going to be London or Madrid/Barcelona(I'm studying Spanish). It's a hard decision.

Also, were there any determining factors for deciding which place outside your country you wanted to visit first?

My first official "international" trip was a few years ago on a company trip with my mother to Banff, Canada.

I also had a trip I did to Nicaragua, but I didn't really count either of those as "vacations", so I usually say London, as I did last year.

My first international trip was in 1996 - PDX-DTW-AMS-ARN. NW flew the 747 on DTW-AMS, and it was amazing.

Stockholm was, and remains today, one of my favorite cities in Europe. And thank god DTW has added a new terminal since then (the old one was horrible).

I went to RTM on the day before my 18th birthday - and that was back in 1971! Had a great time, going to the Hague and Scheveningen to look at Radion Caroline of the Dutch coast. I also got exceedingly drunk in the Double Diamond pub! Big grin

This may or may not have been my actual aircraft, but it was taken from the same location on the same day!

My parents planned the entire trip so I had nothing to do with the destination.

However my 1st international air journey was on a US A321 from CLT-CUN connecting from SEA. That was in 2003.

Since you need to pass throu customs and show your passport, then yes it counts.

My first was AKL-NAN in 1991 when I was 5. First solo was last year in October to SYD. First long haul is in June, WLG-AKL-LAX-ORD-DTW-ORD-LAX-HNL-AKL-WLG

My first international destination (by plane) was either AMS-AGP or AMS-PMI in 1976/77, I can't remember exactly since I was only 3 or 4 yrs old.

My first intercontinental flight was KL601 AMS-LAX in 1992.

My first Intenational destination was Madrid Barajas from MIA on AA. I lived in Spain for a while and I can tell you that you will never regret your decision if you decide to go to Spain. It is amazing!!

Your Spanish will come quick as long as you go out and interact with the natives. I was a little embarrassed at first because I kept messing up but after a while I could understand everything they said and actually carry on a real converation.

Te prometo que vas a encantar Espana.

If you want to know anything else about studying there let me know.

LHR-HAM on BA for a school trip to Luneburg. It was in the old days on an A321 when BA was old-school. It was lovely and they served proper cups of tea and scones and jam to everyone - not just those up front. I remember it being so exciting because I was 11 with all my school friends.

My first international flight was PSA-LGW in the 1982... I was only 13 and I flew alone!
The a/c was a DC-9 and, despite the fact it was a charter, my parents spent the equivalent of 200 Euro for the ticket (and we are talking about 20+ years ago...!!!).

I still have a clear memory of that flight!

My first international trip was when I was 6 months old and my mother took me to Christchurch New Zealand where her family was from. The first trip I remember was when I was 7 and went to India to visit family.

Quoting Tsaord (Thread starter):

Being that you live in Illinois, I am guessing that you are studying Castellano. It is the dialect of Spanish that you will find in Madrid and southern Spain. In Barcelona they speak Catalan which is a mixture of Castellano and French. Barcelona is an amazing city. I went there last year. However English works just as well in Barcelona as Castellano does. The two Spanish dialects are so different that you probably won't understand much in Barcelona, but the people there should understand you at least.

1990, LOT Polish Airlines Tupolev 134A, warm meal on a 2 hours flight... Memories...

My first and a last flight on the type....  Sad

My first international destination occurred about 2 weeks after I was born.

I flew Los Angeles - New York on an AA DC-10 and then my dad flew out to New York from Pakistan on short notice (I was born early) to meet me and my mum. We spent about 4 days in New York and then flew JFK-LHR on Pan Am and then connected back home to Athens on an British Airways Lockheed L-1011. This was in late May 1984.

Significantly, I also flew on the Concorde prenatally with my mother, when she flew LHR-IAD before I was born. Would kill to know which BA Concorde operated that route.

I used to often complain to my parents and ask them why they sent my mum on the Concorde on the way over and not the two of us on the way back and would tell them that they deprived me of my chance to fly on it. They eventually caved in and sent me on it in 2003 anyway  Wink

I guess there are two answers to this for me...

1) Johannesburg, South Africa when I was 1 1/2 years old...BUT Namibia was South African than, so it wasn't officially international

2) Harare, Zimbabwe when I was 1 1/2 years old (as part of WDH-JNB-HRE-LHR-ORD) to visit my family in the USA

My first international flight was AKL-HKG on a Cathay Pacific 747-200, when I was 4 in Jan 1994. I can remember that i was in something A, which was in front of the wings because I can vaguely remember looking at the engines and reading the RR off it Big grin It was such a fine day to fly.. I think either the Kai Tak landing or the smell of HK killed my sister though, she chundered just after landing. We were parked at a remote stand and I remember being on that bus going to the terminal. Must have fell asleep at some stage..
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Back then, the only plane I knew was a 747 and I was sad that I didn't get to fly on it.

two years later, I flew in a LH 747-400 from FRA-MAA..at last!!
