Virgin Atlantic 744 Vs. A346 Upper Class

Mon Apr 24, 2006 8:24 am

I was wondering what the differences in Upper Class were between the 744's (Heathrow only) and the A346's, both outfitted with Upper Class Suite. It seems that the 744 is nicer because it is bigger, has an onboard beaty center, a larger bar, and more seats, plus the upper deck and the nose. I have a choice to go on either though, so I'd love to hear the difference as well as anyone's opinons on the matter. A346 would be IAD-LHR, 744 would be EWR-LHR, in case anyone is wondering. Thanks for the help.

I haven't be on VS A346 yet. But, I'v done some flights on the B744. From JFK-LHR it great high quality service. But, on LHR-IAD the quality of service got lower. Then when you get to LGW-MIA/MCO, it's was the old seat Richard had in 1984. So if you are going to fly VS ,fly on the routs out of LHR ,even if it's a B744 out of LGW.

Well, yes, the 747 has a larger upper class cabin, but the A346 is quiter. By the way, the 747 bar and beauty center is on the main deck. So, if you have an upper class seat on the upper deck, you will have to walk down stairs every time you want to have fun. I personally would recomend the 747 main deck. (nose area specifically).

Are you sure? The oft quoted statement that the A340 has the quietest cabin depends on where you are sitting. Have you got any comparative Upper Class noise data for the 747 and the A346?

Also, the center seats in the 747 convert to double beds (not that that's a very wonderful or commonly used feature  biggrin .
The A340s are also newer, and you are sure to get V:PORT.

I was recently trying to book VS to MBJ ex LGW for Augusst and the seatmaps were showing the flight to be on a 744 and the expedia seatmap (not always reliable I know) was showing a UCS config with the small bar and no beauty salon.... Is this reliable info?

The LGW 744 fleet is configured differently to the LHR 744 fleet.

The LGW birds have UCS only in the nosecone (14 seats), whereas the LHR fleet have the nosecone, Zone B and the front half of the Upper Deck.

As BA380 pointed out the LGW fleet of 744s now have the Upper Class suite and not as you quote 'the old seat Richard had in 1984'. Its been that way for a while so I dont know when you last flew that route, and MIA has been a LHR route for a while.

My preference would be for the 744, but opt for a seat in the nose, especially if you're travelling alone, I prefer 6A or 6K which are right in the nose and very private. Great for a night flight.

Check out http://www.v-flyer.com/seats.asp for others' opinions.

Enjoy!

I agree with the posters who suggest the quality on VS is variable. I once flew out of EWR to LHR and the plane and the service were barely recognisable compared to the flight out from LHR to JFK. Sloppy service, common cabin crew, awful plane (not a 747) and Upper Class was the old style and it was only 15 months ago. I sent my observations to Virgin and they sent me a standard letter in response... LHR/747 all the way I say!

I have flown both the A346 and 744 to and from NYC and as far as Sydney

My significant other prefers the 744 since the cabin is more roomy. The bar is the same size on either. Flying east when it is a 744 we always opt for snooze zone on the upper deck so that we can maximize sleep. Flying west we opt for the lower deck. If you fly into EWR on VS1/VS2 you will have the 744 and it will have AVOD. If you fly on the other flight it will be A346 and will also have the AVOD

I generally request 16A or 16K if on 744 and 8A if on A346
