If it helps, Mileage Plus was launched on May 7th, 1981.

We're approaching its 25th anniversary

I've heard rumors of an upcoming partial program redesign  Wink

Perhaps they will announce the overhall of their product now that the bankruptcy is behind them. I flew UA from ACV to SAN last January and noticed a different attitude in the flight crew. On the flight from SFO-SAN , the pilot greeted everyone at the door and passed out baseball type info cards providing background stats about the type of plane we were flying (757-200). As we found out later, he autographed two of the cards (one for 1st class and one for coach). The folks who received the autographed cards received a complementary bottle of wine. That brought back memories of United flights back in the 70's when flight attendants gave complementary bottles of champagne to newleyweds. Little things like that make me want to fly UA again. I stopped flying UA several years ago when customer service dissipated. If UA brings back some of the little things that make people feel welcome, I think the airline will do well. Those things don't have to be costly tokens of appreciation. I just don't want to be nickeled and dimed like AA and NW are starting to do.
I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

Which route will they announce from Manchester? Washington DC? Los Angeles? San Francisco?

I doubt they will.. but if they did it would be from east coast. More likely IAD than ORD.

I wouldnt be surprised if they take over the MAN ORD route from BMI, so that BD can concentrate on LHR expansion.

Wow you just brought back a memory I had on NW once back in the mid-90's on a MEM-DEN segment. Got a baseball card with the stats of the aircraft (MD-80).

My guess as to the possibilities:

-787, 748, or A380 order. 787 is most likely practically a no-brainer, 748 because UA will eventually need to replace the 744's, and I say A380 because Tilton has been hinting that they've been evaluating the type, so it is a very remote possibility.

-Complete product upgrade. Explus and PS were just the beginning, perhaps a fleetwide interior upgrade?

Those be my 2 cents.

What was the good news (Please don't say "expanded availability")? It all sucked....

As for the 80K to Australia, that was the only real justifiable change, given that QF was so much for expensive in all cabins.

Not happening.... UA does not have the aircraft to add more service right now, and if they did there are more pressing routes which need to be serviced.

My vote goes for interior upgrades. PTV's specifically on their LAX/SFO to Australia routes.

I can't see UA burning capital to acquire new aircraft right out of BK. Their existing fleet gets the job done for the time being.

UA has confirmed new seats in international F and C are coming in 2007, as well as who is providing them, so perhaps they will formally show the new models.

I think it has been pretty clear through Mr. Tilton's "plan" that PTV's in Y on the 747 will not be coming. Adding PTV's in Y will not bring any premiums, so there would not be a great return on the investment.

Yes, as was said above, this was announced today. Information about the changes can be found here: www.united.com/awardchanges.

High/lowlights:

-Guaranteed presence of at least 1 saver award seat on every UA flight in the route network.

-Continuance of 15,000 mile limit for redemption of flights <700 miles (as opposed to 25,000 miles)

-Added fees for booking mileage plus tickets, especially closer to date of travel.

-Increase in miles needed to redeem award tickets, especially standard (less restrictive) awards.

I imagine, as this was announced today, the April 24th announcement will be completely unrelated  Wink

I don't think that I would call any announcment for United in the next few months "big" but rather intresting information!!!
UA will not be announcing orders for some time, however they are activly looking at information from both Airbus and Boeing....

Hope this helps!

IF that is not it then I think it will be a 787 order. I highly doubt they would order the A380.

The 15K award is nice, but I totally disagree with you on the Oz change. You can get C for less on CO, who don't even serve Oz non-stop from the US mainland (and the only service they do have is a 738 to CNS from GUM. There is nothing justifiable about that award change

I like this idea, but only on the younger/new planes in the fleet. That way, if/when some of the older planes are retired in the near term, it won't seem like wasted time/effort/money.

Quoting Ajiggity3 (Reply 24):

I thought that, too--Q1 did just end 31 March so it could be. But would they give the announcement this much lead-time? Actually, if it was earnings, I think we'd have something a little more solid from on high than a rumor from some uncited source.

Some possibilities in my book:
-UA going back to India. (ORD-DEL-BOM and SFO-NRT-BLR have been rumored before)
-ORD-MAN
-ORD-VIE
-787 order

Again, the main issue was United's inability to sell all of a 744 combined with their having to weight restrict their 648,000 pound 772ERs. That combination made the flight impossible to be profitable

There is a lot of speculation about routes and new aircraft. But here's another possibility. United desperately needs a new terminal at IAD. It was all set to go before United went into bankruptcy after 9/11. The design for Tier 2 is huge and includes its own 50 lane FIS facility. Imagine a facility designed to handle everything from their RJ product up to A380s, and possibly have room for all Star Alliance partners under one roof. If they announce a commitment to the project, construction would be given the green light.

You don't want to pull your new B787s & B747-8s up to a dumpy OLD terminal do you?

Exciting possibility. If it's an airplane order announcement I hope it's the 747-8 or 787. United has to have a long haul jumbo for their South Pacific routes, and since the 747-400 has worked so well for them I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually incorporate the new 747 into their fleet. I don't think the A380 would fit their infrastructure as well as the 747-8. Just my opinion.

While the United MP changes might not be popular, they in many ways have regretfully been overdue.

For the most part the award level changes now match closer to AA which upped its award levels several years back including steep changes to premium class seat points.

I suppose its pretty good UA has managed to hold the line this long without making the changes.
Also be happy United has not instituted $250 each way co-pay's as AA has done when using of miles or systemwide upgrade certs to upgrade with.

While certainly this can all be viewed as a dilution in awards, please remember its easier and easier to accrue mileage with the many mileage tie ins via host of companies these days. The mileage balance liabilities at carriers are mushrooming as people keep earning huge sums of miles via co branded products quite easily.

Here is my Guess

Return of United WorldWide Cargo.

First to be leased 744C from Atlas or other such carrier

Then the 748C order to replace them.

Just a guess but it would make since.

All the other airlines are announcing earnings next week or the week after, and United has not yet announced there date. Could be a good chance that is all it is, earnings. If there is another major announcement to go along with it, it will probably take place on their earnings call.

I think we all know IF a CO+UA merger is ever going to happen, it is not going to be anytime soon.
