How Many A.netters Here Fly Economy Regularly?

Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:55 pm

I've read lots of trip reports and browsed lots of threads, and maybe it's just me, but it seems like most people here fly business class or better.

Is it just me? Does anyone fly economy regularly? I know I do; NGO > BOS on JAL 1st class would cost me over $10,000!!!  faint

Sorry if I sound dumb, but does joining these frequent flier programs help a lot? Does it make it more affordable to fly business class, etc?

I've always flown on economy tickets. Sometime's they're higher fare classes (less-retrictions) than others, but they're always in economy. The only time I'm in First (or Business) class is if I use miles or another form of upgrade-certificate to upgrade.

The answer is frequent flyer programs, as they really do help. I always fly on low coach fare classes, and have had the fortune of only flying C or F in the past year or so, including internationally. Find a good FF program, fly a lot, and stay loyal to it.

Joining the FF programs does help. I fly DL out of ATL because they give me the best options for when I want to fly somewhere. When on business I usually buy the unrestricted or slightly restricted Y ticket. A lot of times that gets me the upgrade into F at the time of purchase. If I don't get the upgrade at purchase I almost always get it when my window opens up 72 hours or so before the flight as a Gold Medallion.

I get the higher fare tickets mainly because I almost always have to switch my return flight because of a late meeting or something and I don't want to be at the bottom of the list for standby or pay a huge amount to confirm me on the flight with the fare difference sinc the lower fares are usually sold out by that time.

Luckily my company allows us to fly business class when going overseas. That helps a lot when you're expected to be in the office the next day after arrival and hit the ground running. I've never found business class affordable if I'm paying for it and usually use miles to upgrade to it on personal trips or just get the ticket outright with miles. I do have the Amex Platinum card and I need to use the flight benefits with it. If I buy an C or J class ticket on certain airlines I get a companion ticket as well in the same class. Now just to figure out where to go with the little lady.

All my flights (YX's Signature Service 717s being the sole exception) have been Economy/Coach Class.

Mostly economy here, as most flights out of MSN are longer flights on RJ's. The exception would be Midwest's Signature service 717's out of MKE, or the NW routings from here via MSP to the west coast, where I can usually get a pretty good fare or upgrade for F for all flight segments. NW's F is significantly cheaper than most of the other majors, at least out of MSN most of the time, and they fly mostly mainline jets here with an F cabin.

During the last 20 years or so I have only flown on economy class - or single class on LCCs.

My company only made $19 billion profit last year. We can't afford business class. We all fly economy, or LCC, or our own biz jets when that's more practical.

NWA has the best loyalty program out there for domestic flights -- I'm platinum, and if I am not upgraded on a mainline flight, I get 1000 additional miles. that of course doesn't count on the Mesaba RJ's

Internationally, NWA beats KLM on a cheap ticket, and KLM within Europe is really silly with it's upgrades -- upgrade to 'what' is the question

Continental is my favorite airline, best coach and best first class product domestically (including all of NA), but i'v enever tried them overseas

That may be true for you since you're top-tier, but for lower-tiers on a complimentary upgrade system (US, DL, and CO also have these) it really sucks.

AA and UA have a threshold: every 10,000 miles you fly gives you 4 500-mile upgrade certificates. Than you can use these certificates based on the distance of the flight (in miles) to upgrade. I think these threshold-systems are the best- it makes sure those who REALLY fly alot get upgrades, not just those who do maybe 2 Asia trips, than are always getting complimentary upgrades whenever they fly.

haha.. I know you do. I was just talking about the lower-tier elites, who possibly fly all the time but it's only short routes so they don't get a ton of miles, but still have to compete with people who have done just like two roundtrips to Asia.

I fly economy all of the time out of Tucson. Most of my flights are on WN. When I do have the opportunity, price usually scares me away. The few times I have flown Business or FC were paid for by others.

They started it in 2004 (along with Platinum Companion) and yes, it's a published benefit. But I'd take the upgrade over the 1,000 miles any time.

I do end up in coach sometimes -- even on longhaul -- but I try and avoid it. To answer the OP's question, one of the best uses of miles (in my book) is to upgrade from coach to business.

I've always flown economy. I have enough NW miles for a one-way upgrade, but I figure I'll wait until I have 25,000 miles and wait for a free round-trip. Actually, for my last itinerary, MSP-DEN-PHX on F9, my mom actually offered to upgrade me to first class, which was unfortunate since F9 is all-economy.

I fly economy usually. I have travelled quite a bit with BA on business, but Club Europe is just like economy anyway, apart you get on and off first. Lufthansa business in Europe is like a cattle market. Nowadays I only travel for pleasure, so it Eco all the way.

I always travel economy class. I also join every FF programme I can eg Emirates so that you can pre select your seat, Gulf Air for the extra 10kg baggage allowance. Both times I have been upgraded was when I was travelling with a FF card - LH MAN-FRA , GF AUH-LHR.

The only time I have booked business class was AF MAN-CDG-FLR as I had saved the miles on Delta and they were going to expire. It was definitely not worth the £700 it would have cost to buy.

I take it you have joined the JAL FF programme?

Well you have to fly alot to get business class awards, a few transatlantic flights atleast to have the option. Then if you want to upgrade you have to pay extra to be in the booking class which gets upgraded.

So i wanted to fly from LHR to MEL via LAX and it would cost me £702 normally. But to upgrade it would cost me and extra £285 and then 30,000 mileage points just to LAX, its best just to use the miles for other economy flight awards. I am talking about United Airlines and the Star Alliance.

Thankfully i have been upgraded for free 3 out fo the 4 times i have flown to LAX due to over booking, =)
its hard to fly economy now thats for sure........

I have flown at least 200 times, and have only flown on F/C twice. The first time I was upgraded to First Class on a Delta flight (ATL-GUA on a B737-800) and the 2nd time I was upgraded to Business Class on an IB flight (MAD-MIA on 747-200) due to overbooking.

Other than that, I have ALWAYS flown economy, and as you can see my only experiences in Business have been due to upgrades, so I can safely say that I have never booked a flight in other class than economy.

I'd love to fly JAL Business, but like I mentioned earlier, it's WAY too expensive. Twice the price of an economy ticket I believe, which would put it at around $4000. For that kind of "dosh", I'd rather buy a MacBook Pro or something which will last longer than a two 12 hour flights!

Interesting to see so many people actually do take economy though. And here I thought I was the only one Big grin

OK, I'll bite. I'm fortunate enough to fly business class most of the time, I don't hate economy it is just better in Business or First. Although not at any cost and I have shelved it for economy in the past. If the price is good then I'll jump on economy.

For example two situations last year...

1) My brother was living in Jersey over the summer so I decided to go and spend the weekend with him. LGW-JER-LGW in Economy was 119GBP and Club Europe was 189GBP. I took Club Europe.

2) My girlfriend decided on one of her trips over we should go away for the weekend. We plumped for Dublin. LGW-DUB-LGW in Economy was 97GBP each and Club Europe was 380GBP each. As I had BA Silver status for lounge access and business class check-in I went for that...especially since I got pre-assigned the Club Europe seating at the front of economy  Wink

Longhaul is a different story...I'd rather plan my travels well in advance and either get myself a completely inflexible I class ticket or seek out upgrade availability. The former is becoming more of my MO nowadays. As a BA flyer though if both of these fail I always have WT+ to fall back on, which doubles as a reality check (as my mother puts it) and I have booked this a few times. Somehow on all occassions BA have upgraded me out of it! Am fortunate enough through a combination of the above to have flown 60,000 miles longhaul since I was last at the back of the aircraft.

Before I get shot down for being snobby, not wanting to mix with the masses etc I am fortunate enough that I can travel in Business or First for a lot of the time. Then again I do enjoy it and see it as one of my treats to myself....some people spend $100 three times a week going out drinking and getting smashed off my face, others spend thousands doing up their cars to make them lower/faster/more appealing to cops etc, I spend my money on flying premium classes.

Sounds like a bargain to me  Embarrassment Sure UA C isn't the best out there but those flights add up to probably 20hrs...so that added comfort cost you 14GBP per hour! Excluding any comfort the speedy check-in, Fast Track security line and the RCC may (or may not in the case of the latter  biggrin  ) offer.

I rarely pay first class or business class, but do fly them sometimes. I always book economy for domestic flights. Since I am a UA elite, I get some upgrades for free. They are nice, but I would say it is somewhere around half and half between economy and first class domestically.

On international flights, I fly business or first. Often times I use miles.

Quoting TimePilot (Thread starter):

It definitely makes it more affordable. For your average flyer, you can redeem your miles for upgrades or free tickets. With free tickets being so hard to get nowadays, it is often easier to save your miles up and use them for a first class ticket (where I believe there are actually proportionally more seats offered) or to upgrade. If you fly enough to get status on an airline, in addition to free upgrades offered by US carriers, elite members get extra miles for every flight. These then can be redeemed for even more upgrades or free tickets. Additionally if you are really top tier, you can get free international upgrades. I fly about 50,000 miles a year with United, so I am don't get international upgrades, but I know my parents who fly 100,000-300,000 a year do. They never fly economy. I personally earn a decent amount of money to pay for the occasional upgrade, but domesticallly I often am in economy.

I ALWAYS fly economy...never seen anything but, except once when I was bumped up on a short MCI-ORD flight. I agree, though, it seems like a ridiculously large number of people on this site fly first class...I cant help but think some of them are lying. I hope to see first class on a flight of any real length someday...but we'll see. For now, my long long long long flights such as MCI-ORD-FRA-WDH or MCI-ATL (now IAD)-JNB-WDH will remain in economy, and I will need medical care upon arrival for being crunched into one seat for so long  Wink

I think a large part of that is people are more vocal about flying first class. For someone that flies both, they are more likely to write a trip report about first class.

But yes I am sure there are plenty of people that exaggerate.

I've used to fly SwissAir business class frequently when I was younger. That was cool (I haven't flown them since they became Swiss.)

I flew 1st class on SAS once, many years ago. They put my napkin on my lap for me! (Yeah, I sound like a country bumpkin  Yeah sure )

On JAL, ANA and Lufthansa, I've only flown economy. I usually use my miles just to get free economy tickets instead of upgrades.

I have vowed though, that when I move back to the States, I'm gonna splurge and take business class home  sly

I always fly economy unless the flight is greater than 8 hours then it is business.

Over the past 18 months I have got 400,000 miles on SIA's krissflyer programme (through flights and credit card promotions). I have never ever been upgraded though. Singapore airlines just will not upgrade unless they really, really have to.

Always economy to me

My thoughts precisely. Flying and going to a new destination are exciting rewards in themselves; I don't mind giving up a little leg room and the complimentary champagne. In addition, I am a bargain hunter and have ended up on some interesting flights, such as Air-India JFK-LHR (a wonderful experience!) and British Airways EWR-ATH. The money I save stays in our vacation account and goes toward the next trip!

RE: How Many A.netters Here Fly Economy Regularly?

I've flown business twice while I was working for a company on CDG-HKG-TPE-HKG-CDG with CX.
After that, I've only flown Economy even for loghauls like CDG-PVG-CDG or CDG-EWR-CDG.

For leisure, I can only afford economy but I've been upgraded to business once on LAX-CDG with AF.
Flying is amazing!

I almost allways buy Y and upgrade. I've bought J a few times but I seldom fly Y....
