Your Best/Worst Ever Airline Food?

Wed Apr 26, 2006 2:20 pm

Okay, no doubt this needs to be divided into several categories that may/may not apply to everyone in the thread. That said, try to list 'em by mealtime, food, airline/class, route and approximate month/year!

This ought to be interesting...

Breakfast: HNL-ORD (Cheese Omelette w/Croissant) / UA-First / Jan 1983
Lunch: NRT-ICN (Lunch Bento) / UA-Biz / Jun 2000
Dinner: ICN-LAX (Korean Bibimbap) / OZ-Y Class / Jul 1999
Honorable Mention: HKG-BKK (Tandoori Chicken) / TG-Y Class / Oct 2000

The worst was breakfast on a NW flight from AMS to Detroit. It was supposed to be french toast but it was a slimy lump. Add this to a cramped DC-10 seat and surley flight attendants...what a trying trip!

Best: Wardair Canada LGW-YYZ Chateaubriand with all trimmings followed by a selection of desserts served from the trolley, and a full Engliish Tea with scones, cream, gateau etc served two hours later - all in economy!

Worst: Virgin Atlantic SFO-LHR. The flight attendant missed our row and by the time they realised their mistake(when coffee was served to other passengers despite ringing the service call button several times), only vegetarian meals were available. We were served some pasta and vegetables, but it resembled and tasted like pig swell.

Best Starter: A very tough call between: UA Business Class: IAD-LHR-IAD (w/pics) (by Fbgdavidson Feb 22 2006 in Trip Reports) - Feb 2006 - Smoked salmon and goat cheese with sun blushed tomato.

BA293/292 Club World - LHR-IAD-LHR (with Pictures) (by Fbgdavidson Apr 4 2005 in Trip Reports)
- April 2005 - Mozzarella cheese, sun-blushed tomatoes and grilled artichokes dressed with peppered olive oil.

Best Entree:
I'm not going to vote for one. IME airlines don't do entress particularly well whether it be Y, J or F. I'm waiting for CX F and SQ F to come up somewhere in the future  Smile

Best Dessert: BA First: LHR-CPT-LHR (w/pics + Video) (by Fbgdavidson Feb 23 2006 in Trip Reports) - Feb 2006 - Fresh berries lasagne with Mascarpone cream and Opitz Goldackerl Trockenbeerenauslese 2002 dessert wine

Best Breakfast: BA001 Concorde: LHR-JFK September 2002 (by Fbgdavidson Oct 14 2004 in Trip Reports) - Farmhouse brunch of scrambled eggs, pork sausage, grilled bacon, tomato and sauteed wild mushrooms

Worst airline food:

Any of the steaks BA choose to serve up in Club World. Each time I order it in the vain hope it was better than the last one. Invariably it is but they are still bad.  thumbsdown  BA223: LHR-IAD In Club World (by Fbgdavidson Oct 15 2004 in Trip Reports)

LHR-BRU-LHR In BD Business/Economy (w/pics+video) (by Fbgdavidson Dec 31 2005 in Trip Reports)
Roast chicken and bacon with tomato and mayonnaise on a seeded roll.

Whoever at BD thought that customers in business class would want to eat out of a box should be shot.

All are Economy Class flights, and I'm including snack service since I rarely get hot meals.

WORST: NW MSP-DCA and DCA-MSP B752 2003 - Pretzel Twists. Pretzels are dry enough, then add in being in a dry airplane. The first flight was morning, and the second was afternoon.

BEST HOT: SY MSP-PHX breakfast B738 2005 - Something resembling a McGriddle, but I like how McGriddle buns taste, and my only other hot meals were also hot sandwiches, but not as good.

BEST SNACK: NW MSP-PHX "dinner" B752 2006 - NW's snack boxes are much better than pretzel twists, and this flight had the blue snackbox, which IMO is the best of the four different snack boxes NW serves.

As you can tell, my life of flying domestic economy class on relatively short flights doesn't lead to any real meal service on legacies.

Best: Breakfast LH SFO - MUC (Economy) in January 2004. I was totally starving by the time breakfast arrived, and for once the airline omelette tasted as good as airline omelette could possibly taste. Juicy and tasteful eggs, delicious mushrooms, hash browns, fresh fruit and coffee. After flying all the way from HNL this was a truly appreciated meal. Also, the dinner on the same flight roughly 7 hours earlier was also very delicious. I remember it was a pasta dish, and I ate absolutely everything. LH truly impressed me with their long-haul meals.

Worst: Dinner KLM YVR - AMS (Economy) in April 1992. OK, so I was only 12 at the time, but I still haven't gotten over the "meal" I was served at this flight 14 years ago. I still have no idea what was served, but it was some kind of mushy thing composed of (probably) meat and vegetables. The whole dish had a sickening brownish color, and the consistency was somewhat like baby food. Come to think of it, I don't think I ever want to know what this was.

Also kudos to SQ for their dinner on the red eye flight from SIN to CDG that I took in economy three and a half months ago. The dinner was chicken with potatoes in white whine sauce, and although I wasn't as tasteful as the meals I had on LH, it was nonetheless very satisfactory.

breakfast, Air UK MAN-AMS may 1996 F100
This was a hot breakfast bacon, sausage, egg, tomato. plus cornflakes and milk, plus bread roll and jam. On a 1 hour flight!

Snack, Phillipine Airlines Karachi-FRA june 1993 B747-200
I don't know what it was, sort of a green sponge cake plus something that looked like a mutant pizza. tasted vile.

Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - bring them down to your level !
