Best Way To Go From LAX-LHR?

Mon May 01, 2006 7:51 am

I am wondering which is the best airline/route to take when going from LAX to London, preferably LHR?

By Plane.

Much quicker than the alternatives!  Silly

In all seriousness, I've only ever flown that route twice, once on BA and once on VS, I would recommend either.

Have also flown BA and VS and while both were VERY nice, I REALLY like VS.

BA and VS offer a quality product across all their cabins. If possible choose a British carrier rather than an American carrier.

AA is less full than BA/VS out of LAX

The choices: American, United, Virgin, BA, and Air New Zealand. Not sure if Air India flies this route. I would go with Air New Zealand just for the hell of it....

LAX-HNL-NRT-ICN-PEK-HKG-SYD-MEL-PER-JNB-DXB-AUH-CAI-IST-ATH-FCO-ZRH-FRA-AMS-CDG-MAD-LHR would be my preference.

The short way would be BA/AA/UA/VS nonstop to London, or the alternatives, NW, DL, US, CO one stop.

My number one recommendation is Air New Zealand. They have the best seat pitch in economy on the route at 34'', which means you will have enough space. The interiors of the 747s on this route have just been refurbished, so you get nice new seats that have AVOD IFE. Also the service is very good. Kiwis know how to be kind and serve well as they are just such a friendly culture.

If you get to go premium economy or business class, then I still recommend NZ. Air New Zealand and Virgin Atlantic have the exact same fully flat business class suites that are amazing minus the different seat colors.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

It really depends on which Class of service you're taking. If it's a premium class (Business/First), definitly go BA, VS or better yet NZ - for the LAX-LHR leg. If it's Economy, doesn't make much difference - they're all the same, including UA. Maybe a little better food on BA. Exception: No experience with AA or VS on this route.

Haven't flown LAX-LHR but I have flown SFO-LHR on UA (spring 1992) and BA (winter 2004). Both were nice trips. The BA FA's were very professional and friendly. Seats in Y were cramped and the food was about what you would expect in coach. Too bad BA moved many of their US bound flights to T1 in LHR. The shops and food courts in T4 were excellent. I agree with Juventus, check out Air New Zealand. I have read great things about that airline.

to get a value and a bit better service, you can try for World Traveller or Premium Economy in BA/VS

Well, I was on BA during the winter of 2004. They were horrible! FAs were cranky, and they only gave the economy class one full meal and a "snack box." (was this during the LHR catering strikes?)

The reason I ask, is because I am flying (winter of 2006), LAX-LHR-CCU, and then CCU-LHR and LHR-LAX (stay in CCU for 2 weeks and LHR for 1 week.)

I looked at BA.com, and they gave me $1,687 per person (on economy class) round trip.

So, I am trying to find if there is anything better out there.

How could you omit SIN?

Seriously, I would take either NZ or VS depending on schedule needs.

Oh yeah that snack box on BA. That was dreadful and the dinner was kind of small. I thought BA was far better than any UA flight I have flown domestically during the last 5 years. Although I must say that my last experience on UA in January was outstanding. I think the change in attitude is a sign of UA's exit from bankruptcy. Before then, it seemed like many of the customer service and flight crews I experienced were taking their frustrations with management out on the passengers. AS/QX and WN got most of my business during this period.

$1,700 to Calcutta? That is pretty good for flying halfway around the world. My QF ticket from LAX-SYD during the 2000/2001 new year was $2,000.

The BA flight from SFO-LHR-SFO that I took in 2004 cost me an eye popping $298 USD. They were celebrating the Wright Brothers' 100 year aniversary of the first flight and offered tickets between the US and UK for $100 each way plus taxes. I have never jumped on a plane ticket so fast. Hence my opinion on BA may be slightly biased  Wink Next time I will pay a little extra and fly in WTP.

The same flight to CCU on World Traveller Plus is about $3000 per person. Haha, its a bit out of my reach.
