Trolley Hire Cost At Airports

Mon May 01, 2006 12:30 pm

Hi all,

I just came back from a trip, and it made me think.. what's the reasonable cost of trolley hire at airports? And what are the cost of hiring trolleys in the airports that impose those fees?

I spent A$4 (that's about US$3) for a trolley at Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport, which I thought was a bit too much just to get a trolley rolling. Although the trolleys are quite new from Smarte-Carte, I still think that it's not worth that much to maintain anyway.. I realised that since Sydney Airport was privatised, costs have increased.. Trolleys from A$2 about 2 years ago (which were there for a while), to A$3, only to find it increased again after not so long..

I've searched this forum and found nothing on trolley costs, so pardon me if I've double-posted.

P.S. I don't want any reply that says "don't be a cheapo" or "don't hire trolleys if you're a tight-a**", because I'm just trying to get a general idea on how it's doing out there.

Thanks in advance

In the States it is usually about $2-3. My trips overseas have always afforded me free carts to clear customs. When flying domestic though I never need a cart.

I do not recall visiting any airport in Europe (West, Central, South) that was charging for use of baggage carts. However at some locations you will need a coin to unchain the cart *). Thanks to the € this process has become much easier when arriving in a foreign country ...

Hi guys,

Thanks for the responses. Sorry took me a while to reply to this one..

I'm actually surprised that many European countries have free trolleys. I thought they would have charged several Euros.. (Apart from porters that are sometimes offered). Thanks for all your inputs on which airports/countries have free trolleys.
I know that most airports where you have to pay for trolleys are usually those in the departure area. I have not seen any airports charge you during arrivals.

This now then leads me to my next question. When you do get charged for the trolley, does any of them offered refunds if you return the trolleys? (I remember this at Montparnasse train station in Paris, where you can return the trolley and get refunds). I, for one, was quite irritated that here in Sydney, we do not get a refund.

So thanks again for any replies in advance  Wink
