To Make Shortest Route Around The World

Tue May 09, 2006 10:56 pm

Hi everyone,

I am just wondering; if we accept JFK as a "starting point" and we want to make a trip around the world, what would be the shortest route?
The trip will start from JFK and and will end again in JFK. On which cities we would have to stop? Also lets think we are flying with A345. (If you think using a medium-haul A/C is more suitable, then make a flight plan according with this)

Waiting for your replies  Smile

Depends on your definition of around the world... Steve Fosset's opinion differs to many!

Strictly speaking, to go entirely around the world, you would fly across at least three continents. My suggestion would be:

JFK -> LHR -> SIN -> JFK.

What about JFK -> LHR -> ICN/NRT -> JFK?

This can easily be done by flying directly to the North Pole, doing a circle (or more than one) around it, and flying back. No refueling stops needed.

Furthermore, you can travel in time like that. With every circle around the North Pole, you'll be crossing the International Date Line. If you make about 16 000 circles, you can go and stop the Kennedy murder.  Smile

Well, if you just want to travel around north pole you could do JFK-HEL-NRT-JFK, but of course that's nowhere near going the whole way around the world as you are not even stepping on southern hemisphere...

You should just about be able to manage JFK-SIN-JFK with just the one stop on the A345.

Depends on what YOU mean by around the world! The offical definition by the FAI (International Aeronautical Federation) the body that controls and records aviation records, requires that an "around the world" record course MUST cross the equator TWICE.

Exactly.

(And it would be awfully difficult to return to the departure point by crossing it ONCE...  Wink )
