Most Obscure International Carrier You Have Flown?

Wed May 10, 2006 6:02 pm

After a recent flight, it had me thinking what was the most obscure airline people on here have flown on.

Now I realise that many of us will have flown on some small prop operation where they just carry a few tourists into the desert or bush or island hopping(such as Isles of Scilly Skybus for example between NQY and ISC in my case), but I thought what about those airlines that fly larger aircraft, better still international services.

The reason I was thinking this is that a couple of weeks ago flying back from Mumbai to Delhi what should have been an Indian Airlines flight ended up being operated by what must be one of the world's most obscure flag carriers:

Druk Air - Royal Bhutan Airlines (on this very aircraft too).

And have to say that it was a very good flight, and more comfortable than some European carriers on their short haul services too.

So how about everyone else ??
Just when I thought I could see light at the end of the tunnel, it was some B*****d with a torch bringing me more work

They're just charter, but mine is MG - Champion Air, who operates a fleet of 727s. I've flown them to Mexico.

I flew on the short-lived Sun Jet International, though I still wonder where the "International" fits in.

Flew Kabul to Dubai and back this winter with Kam air and Ariana, national flag carrier of Afghanistan. Scary stuff, (On both), no wonder Ariana is referred to as "Scary Anna".

Both Ariana and Kam "store" obsolete aircraft (or surplus ones) near to the main apron at Kabul, so you're never sure what aircraft you're actually getting on until you're on the steps! I saw a Kam 727 sat back on it's tail (nose right up in the air) due to weight of snow this winter.... the answer was to push it upright again then put some old car tyres under the tail in case it happened again. Scary thing was that I then saw same 727 on the ramp at Dubai 6 weeks later meaning some crazy monkey flew it!

Never again for this callsign.

I flew on a Tupolev 134a from Nottingham East Midlands to Pula (Yugoslavia) back in 1981. The Airline was Aviogenix, was glad to get back on terra firma.

I flew on a Sky King 732 from BOS-JAX on a charter for Super Bowl XXXIX.

They sure packed us in for that flight. I'm 5'10'' and my knees were firmly planted into the seat in front of me and the top of the seat barely reached my neck. It was all good in the end because the Pats won  Smile

AeroMexico.....even though it's not obscure. It's the most distant airline I've been on. On a 737-700 from CUN-ATL.  Yeah sure

1971, Overseas National DC-8-63; 1977, Balair DC-8-63. No movies, no IFE but, like all flying, great fun.
If it's new and quiet, I don't want to fly it.

I have flown on Venezuela´s (a few years back) on Avensa and Servivensa domestice service Boeing 727. Pretty obscure... Oil leaking from the wings, weird engine sounds, F/A was nuts, etc

Pelangi airlines from Singapore (seletar) to Tioman in Malaysia (the island where they filmed South Pacific).
Didn't actually fly the route - we all got on board the Do-228 but then a smiling man got on and said the plane is broken and laughed. We all thought he was joking but he wasn't. So 2 hours later they cancelled the flight andf we had to get a taxi and ferry instead.
I include it as We did fly with Pelangi from Tioman to KUL a few days later.

I'm glad I didn't fly into Tioman, its a terrifying Kai Tak like approach into a quarry so if the plane doesn't stop on the runway which is about 1000feet long you hit the base of a cliff. Very similar to Lukla in Nepal.

Boeinglover24 beat me to it!

Probably the most obscure airline I've flown was a domestic Philippine carrier called Asian Spirit. I flew it between Manila and Caticlan enroute to a great 3 days on Boracay. The two pics here show one in the air at Manila and on the ground at Caticlan. They only have two of this type in their fleet.

I wouldn't say Air Europa are any more obscure than BMI or LTU!

Anyway, mine should be:

Ghana Air or how to get from Lagos to Niamey via KIA (on a LH 340, no less!) then on a DC-9 via Abidjan - Bamako and Ouagadougou.

Worst schedule ever!

Also some Eastern European carriers like Hemus Air, Pulkovo (not that obscure, I know), Carpatair, Aerosvit, etc.

I'm going to have to say Petroleum Air Services. I had to endure a 1.5 hour Egyptian internal on a Dash7 with them a few years back. I believe they do international charters too.

Flew Kabul to Dubai and back this winter with Kam air and Ariana, national flag carrier of Afghanistan. Scary stuff, (On both), no wonder Ariana is referred to as "Scary Anna".

Agreed: I flew Ariana from Tehran to Kandahar to Kabul once, not because I wanted to, but had to. It was the only flight out after I had been stranded in Tehran for three days during their revolution.

Back in the mid-90s, I was booked on a charter flight nonstop JMK-CDG.

The flight was finally cancelled by the airline for technical reasons and the Tour Operator chartered a MD80 of "Venus Airline" ... a Greek charter company.
We flew JMK-JTR-LYS-CDG !!! Most of the passengers boarded in JTR, at the end of the boarding, two passengers were standing in the aisle, as there was no more seat available ... so they simply proposed them to seat... on a jumpseat !

This was one of the worst air experience in my life !  scared
