Do You Miss The Old US Air?

Tue May 16, 2006 11:01 am

I did a quick search and could not find this posted anywhere before. Take a look at this commercial, it reminds me of the days in PIT where US Air used to rule. I just love that old slogan "US Air begins with You."

PS: Check out the great looking 737! I miss that beautiful livery.

Oh absolutely! I LOVED those ads as a kid. And when they said it, they meant it. I still have three timetables from that era, one from 1995, and two from 1994. I also have cards that say that on the front. Those were the first TV commercials I remember from USAir. I don't recall any with the brown and red scheme of the late '70s. Thanks.

I miss Piedmont and PSA, but USAir?

Yes...I agree. I miss PS, PI and the old, old USAir (right after the Allegheny name change). I used to fly USAir flight 21 between LAX and SFO with their all-coach 727-200's for $29 one-way.

Wow! That was one of my favorite commercials growing up! We actually have it on a video tape back home and I watch it when I'm feeling nostalgic (yes, I even know all the words  bouncy  ). Airlines used to have such great commercials back then...and it seems like there were a lot more of them compared to today. The chances of seeing a USAir commercial in LA these days are pretty slim  Sad .
Every flight counts.

I do not miss the old US Air. US Airways was in many many ways a better looking airline than its predecessor. I am only talking looks, nothing more. The old US Air 'craft looked like a 70s era bus that was stripped of its paint and rushed people from section-8 to underpriviledged kids schools. I flew the old US almost exclusively in 1990 during a trip to the US on ID-90, and seriously, from the first step onto their 'crafts and connections at hubs, it sucked. Some 10 years later, I did try US Airways again, reluctantly, and it looked good. I will definitely miss its classy look now that quite a bit of AmWest is seen on it.

As they say....perception is reality.
I remember a VERY different USAir.
That commercial actually made me a little queasy.... ill

But I have pretty fair recollection of Gordon's PSA....as they say, the airline that started IT ALL!

It is my opinion, they should call the whole damn thing PSA and get it over with!

My firs, experience of the old US Air was when they began to operate the PSA routes. They tried to serve food on the quick flights between southern and northern California...lol! They destroyed the hometown favorite, so the old US Air does not hold many positive memories for me. I do not miss them. I suspect those on the East Coast may have had a much more positive experience.

Ditto. I do NOT miss US Scare. They destroyed Piedmont.

Allegheny (formerly All American Aviation - 1939) and Piedmont (Feb. 1948) pre-date PSA (May 1949)

I don't miss the ugly color scheme of USAir. I do miss the variety of aircraft. at Albany, you could see DC-9s, MD80s, F100s, and 737s - a nice mix.

I guess the new US Airways was better than the old USAir, but that was a very nice ad.

Yes...I do miss the ole' "Allegheny Air System." (Whenever I think of the 1970's radio jingle, I sometimes can't get it out of my mind for days!)

In retrospect, USAir (f/k/a Allegheny Airlines) was way ahead of their time with what were then considered to be "Cattle Cars" (all coach DC-9's, etc.) Food was served on plastic prison-type trays (the trays were bright orange and had built-in pockets for the different food items.)

They were famous for the proverbial milk-run flying from say, BOS to PIT with stops in PVD and PHL.

They were very utilitarian and "industrial." A lot of people didn't like them because they were accustomed to other airlines that spent a lot of time and money relatively luxurious service.

My father flew Allegheny dozens of times a year and would grumble that it reminded him of the troop trains he rode from Chicago to New Orleans during WWII.

Then came PeopleExpress...and the rest is history!

Just a thought...but I suspect you could paint anything on the outside of a plane and it really wouldn't make a difference. What makes the difference is the amount of passion someone has when it comes to doing the work required to operate an airline today. From the reservations agents to gate agents to baggage handlers to mechanics to ramp personnel to the flight attendants and to the pilots (and no, these were not listed in any particular order of importance)...these are the people that will either make or break your perception of what's good and not good at an airline.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people (not only in the airline industry) that view their work as nothing more than a J O B. If you aren't passionate about it, then it's hard to be passionate about the people you come in contact as you go about doing it.

That being said, the airlines have taken their fair share of beatings over the recent years (some of which they brought on themselves, some of which they were victims of). But the true measure of how good a company can be is how well it recognizes the internal strengths and capabilities of it's people to overcome those challenges. I've said for many years...if a company pays more attention to the employees rather than shareholders, we'd see a lot more profitable companies.

IMHO, if the employee is happy, then the customers will be happy and spend more money with you. If the customer is happy and spending more money with you, then the shareholder will be happy because they are seeing a healthy and profitable organization.

I'm an old Piedmont person and for years I've lamented the demise of the airline. I'm encouraged by Doug Parker's influence to bring back the best of all of the carriers that now make up the new US Airways. To me, that shows passion for his people and that will bring great dividends to us all.

Happy and Safe Flying Everyone!

Oh so true. I thin thats one of the reasons spirits are high on both the East and West systems becasue of his ability to bring the history back a bit and realize the employees are not the expendable assets that the Wolfs, Gangwals, Ichans and Lorenzos of the world think we are.

I personally miss the Pre-Wolfe USAir days. From the name change and fleet change (this is NOT a rip on airbus) onwards, "US Airways" has gone downhill. Also as a Pittsburgher, I miss the hub. I miss seeing mainline and express aircraft all day long, not just B1900's and Air Wiskey CRJ's. (and the others).

Im not old enough to remember em, but from what I can tell form the old people, they also miss Mohawk and Allegheny. When it became USAir, they sorta lost the hometown carrier feel. Once the "home" connection is gone, its hard to bring back.

I did my training "New Hire" in 2002 in PIT. At time there still a very large operation out of PIT and some of the 737s were still in the old scheme. I stayed in this hotel called MainStay Suites or something of the sort, close to the Robinson Town Centre (hope I am getting these names correct) and I would sit at my window and just look at US Airways flights come in. IN those days I didnt know much about the airline as i worked for an airline handling company and they sent us on US training to handle the flights that would start that December.

But it was really cool being there, and I started to really like US. For me it was an airline I barely knew existed come to life with such great numbers in PIT. We did out job training stunt at PIT as well. So it was really awesome working at the airport, of coruse all the customers asking where we were from cause of our accents and happy that US is flying to Grenada and they hoped to fly to the island soon etc. But the counter space, the gates, US was really the big guy in PIT. And what a nice airport. I was secretly wishing that US would see my 'great' work and pay me more than my company to stay working in PIT.. HEHE I can't imagine how empty it is now.

The training facility is still there, for now. PSA does their computer training there. It's RIDC building 2. Yes, you got the names right. It's a shame it didn't work out for me at PSA, but I will join US Airways at some point. It's just a matter of time.

I was not referring to the chronology of the pedigree.....

PSA was THE innovator of the short-haul, quick-turn, value-priced concept, that the founders of WN emulated before starting their own airline.
At that time, no other airline was doing what PSA was doing in California.
PSA brought air travel to the people.....I would dare say transporting more hippies and flower-children between SFO and LAX than any other airline. (But I guess one had to be there to know full what I'm talking about!)

Many airlines today, would love being what PSA WAS.

And then it was gone.

We are very lucky that it is America West running the show and not USAirways......I can live with it continuing in name only....

I would love it if they painted every aircraft based in the west as PSA, and every bird in Charlotte as Piedmont...that would be sweet.
Philadelphia can keep US and AL.
