727 - Your Last Flight

Wed May 24, 2006 1:23 am

Okay, we've had plenty of threads on one's "first flight", how about recalling the last time you flew a classic jetliner. Let's start with the 727.

My last 727 trips were on Delta via SLC over Memorial Day weekend in 2001. Flying PDX-SLC-PHX-SLC-PDX, 3 of the 4 flights were on the 727-200. It seemed every other plane hubbing at SLC back then was still a 727!

Last 727-100 flight was on UA, MCI-LAX-SFO in early 1983.

My last 727 ride was on a DL 727-200 bound for CVG from BDL an my way to TUS for my Feb. vacation to stay at a ranch/hotel. It was N543DA wearing the Ron Allen livery, and the Capt. let me sit in the cockpit after the plane landed at CVG, it was sad to see the 727's go also the 762's, but now we get aircraft like the 767-400 and the 738.

From BDL and BAF,  crying

After a two week home-study program in Morelia, Michoacán, México, I flew MLM-LAX.

The flight took off around 8 AM, and looked like the last flight of the day...several flights had taken off earlier (all MX), and one AM TIJ-bound plane arrived and departed while I was still in the airport.

The plane was spotless, and I had a seat on the wing where I could easily see XA-MEL.

I even remembered thinking, "this is probably my last 727 flight!!" - and it was.

My last flight was either 1999 or 2000. Flew United SAN-DEN-TPA, the Tampa leg being the 727 flight. Purposely booked it so I could fly her again and see DIA for the first time. I will miss that beautiful bird forever.  Sad

A UA flight from MSP to DEN. I remember it very well because it was my first all-female flight crew flight. The DEN-SEA part of the same trip was also my first 777 flight.

My last flight was on AA in December of 2000, ATL-ORD. It was part of a bizarre routing on AA that went ORD-ATL-MIA and then our return was non-stop MIA-ORD. Never thought I'd make a connection on AA in ATL in 2000!. The ATL-MIA leg was delayed, we were waiting for an FA.

Before that, my last 727 flight was DL, ORD-SLC in 1998. Boy had that old bird seen better days.

In the early 1990s (1992 or 1993) on the 727-277 Advanced SYD-BNE-SYD with Ansett Australia.

They're also my only 727 flights as they were withdrawn from service by the other domestic airline (TAA / Australian Airlines) long before Ansett withdrew theirs.
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

My last 727 flight was aboard an United Airlines, -200 series, in the MIA-MCO route, in January of 2000.
It was a pretty uneventful flight, but still very nice, specially because of the loudness of those engines! That's awesome!

Sadly, my last 727 flight was aboard a United Airlines flight from ONT to ORD in October 1992.

It was aboard a 727-222/Adv N7255U, but not in the 'Worldwide Service' scheme introduced in the early 1990's:

Others I have been on, were:

American Airlines 727-23's, 727-223's and Mexicana de Aviacion 727-264's.

I sure do miss these great aircraft. It seems strange not to see them in passenger use like they used to be.

I'm a fan of flight log threads.

IIRC, my one and only 727-100 flight was Nationsair (N7) PIT-PHL-BOS in 1995 when N7s 737-200 workhorse were doing maintenance. The 727-100 was leased from Atlantic Aviation.

My last 727-200 was USAir Shuttle BOS-LGA----back row passengers could deplane through the rear aircraft-built-in stairs that juts out underneath the 3 engines.

One of the first things a lot of the US majors did as part of their post-9/11 downsizing and cost-cutting was to get the three-seat three-engine classic out of the picture as quickly as they could.

This was one of my favorite planes to ride on, especially the takeoff. However, my last three 727 rides, all shortly before the plane was taken out of service were:

DL ATL-Birmingham AL-Jackson MS. Late, due to having to call out a maintenance person in Birmingham to repair the cockpit emergency oxygen system.

DL Tulsa-ATL. Late, unknown maintenance problem.

UA PIT-ORD. Late, because the #2 engine would not start.

So while I love this plane, those last three flights made me think that it was getting pretty old and maintenance-intensive.

Still, I really miss it!!

The most unusal was a sub for a 732 on the MFR-SFO in early November 1989 the same trip with my connecting flight to ORD was switched from a 747 to a 747SP.

My last 727 flight was on AA from MIA-PAP. It was in December 2001, about the time most US airlines were retiring them. I knew at the time it would be one of my last, if not the last, flights on the classic. I remember looking in the cockpit as I boarded and seeing the Flight Engineer at his "sideways" seat.

It was a wonderful flight, and I sat in the forward right bulkhead seat. Had I known at the time that it would be my last 727 flight, I would have been very nostalgic at the time...
