Favourite Airline Ad?

Fri May 26, 2006 8:30 am

In reference to another thread, re Gay Airline ads, what's everyone's favourite airline ad, real or spoof, or filmed onboard?

I've already linked a couple, but to kick us off, here's an old and award-winning UK Ad from 1979, featuring Joan Collins! It's not for an airline, but had an airline cabin setting. Was voted the UK's 2nd favourite Ad of all time last year!

That is a cool commercial, PLUS, thanks for putting the link on, very cool!

Two classics in my opinion, involve Lamar Muse.

First one is when Southwest was first starting service and Braniff and Texas International were DESPERATELY trying to put Southwest out of business. They cut the fare from Dallas to Houston to $13.00 one way! Well, Lamar Muse, the president of Southwest Airlines at the time, went straight to their ad agency and the time and came up with an ad that basically said, "No one is going to shoot Southwest Airlines out of the sky for a lousy $13 bucks" !! The promotion has been studied many times in case studies at the university level in my American colleges. What Southwest did was still charge the normal fare of $26.00 each way, plus gave a free "fifth" of whiskey, rum, vodka, scotch, etc.....to the people who continued to pay the full fare of $26.00. For one month, Southwest Airlines was the LARGEST liquor distributor in the State of Texas !! It was a classic move, no doubt!

Second one involving Lamar Muse was when he started up Muse Air after losing a board-room struggle with Rollin King, the gentleman who had the idea of starting up Southwest Airlines. For this new ad campaign for Muse Air, the ad copy said, "Big Daddy is Back" and it had a huge picture of Lamar Muse. In his book which was published a couple of years ago, he said he didn't really feel comfortable with the ad campaign, but I really liked the boldness of the campaign. To me, if we hadn't had the PATCO strike and if Michael Muse hadn't made Muse Air into REVENGE Air, Muse Air might have made it if they had been able to make Hobby their hub instead of fighting Southwest route for route.......hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20

Last one was the National Airlines campaign of, I'm (female name), Fly Me! It was at the height of the sexual revolution and the wild times of the 70's if I'm not mistaken..............there were tons of sexually suggestive ads that National ran during this campaign. Of course, tons of women's groups like NOW protested to high heaven........I have a t-shirt from SkyShirts that has a picture of a National DC-10 on the front and the shirt says, "I'm National, Fly Me" !! One of my favorite t-shirts!

Airline advertising used to be SOOOOOOO cheesy !!

Quoting JayDavis (Reply 3):

Don't want to hijack this thread, but you brought up good points about MuseAir.
Even as an 18 year-old at the time, I thought it was an asinine game-plan; going route for route with Southwest.
The only thing they had going for them was that they were all non-smoking, and that became moot within a few years anyway.
Oh, and they had MD-80s, however I don't remember them ever selling the fact that more of their seats were either window or aisle.

Favorite Airline Commercials.

Western Airlines. The Only Way to Fly.

I liked the feel of the American Airlines campaigns of the early 80's. Remember the theme music the most. I was living in Dallas at the time and they spent a ton of money in the market. It was still the honeymoon period for them having just moved the HQ down from NYC.
It also had much to do with Dallas/Ft Worth too at the time being a very dynamic market with American, Braniff, Delta, Texas International, Southwest, and even lowly Frontier ver 1.0 and Continental for a time duking it out all over the TV, Radio and Newspapers.
But it was those "Something Special In The Air" spots that have lasted the test of time.

Even though I never lived in a Southern market, I saw some of their ads in a class a long time ago....they were very clever and funny...but thats all I can remember.

Other than that...much of the airlines advertising had little effect on me.....don't know why.....maybe cause most of it was LAME....like that New York Air commercial.
I like the song, loved their color scheme, but very average commercial. (That was a local ad...any one know from what market it was from? Wherever it was had a "Shuttle" to NY for...$39/$29. DC? Boston? Could have been both actually....don't think that would have aired in RDU, CLE, DTW for those prices...?

My favourite would have to be the AA Engine and Way of Life commercials- I wish i had a link to them... they were very inspirational for AA, especially after 9/11. I wonder why they dont play them today compared to the crap "We Know Why you Fly"... who gives a s!!! why we fly... AA needs to bring back those old commercials... and fly AA, Because They're something special in the air!

My fav commercial is the UA one from iirc 91 where its a bussinessman talking about lost clients because they dont meet face to face anymore. so he then hands out tickets to all his execs and himeslf to pay a visit to them all to win them back.

I have loads of airline commercials saved to my computer. I particularly like the new United ads. However my favourite ad has to be THIS (you'll need RealTime Media Player installed) old British Caledonian ad called: "I Wish They All Could Caledonian."

I also like the Airbus commercials, but I think everyone has seen those.

Does anyone know where I can find that old (1960s) Lufthansa commercial called: "Animals Are People Too." I remember someone posted it here on A.net a while ago, but I can't seem to find it again. It was in German but still very funny. It would be great if someone could post a link here again.

Thanks,

My favorite of all time only aired a couple times, I wonder how many remember it. It was a UA commercial with a 744 filled with water and whales swimming through the cabin. It was meant to show how roomy the interior of the plane was, but got negative feedback as too many thought it was in poor taste - possibly suggesting a ditching in the ocean.

Say what you will. "Engine" and "Way of Life" commercials were-and STILL are- inspirational, and are very good at conveying to the American people that AA was "with them too" during all of this.... and its something AA should be proud of.

I was refering to the 9/11 attacks... not your petty problem with bags... and why, per say are you judging an airline because they lost your bags? It happens to every airline at some point. deal with it .

I personally apologize for this small deviation from the main thread.

UA used to have ads back in the mid-1970s with crew singing a snappy song. There was a flight attendant in a 747 engine singing. I loved them, but they only lasted a couple of month. They even had a song and issued one of those cheesey rubber records that came in the mail. Anyone else remember them?

Wow...I forgot about those post 9/11 American ads. Those were awesome! The best I've seen in recent years.

But I'd say my all-time favorite is the 'USAir begins with you' ad from around 1992; there was a thread on this ad not too long ago...

QANTAS!! Without a doubt this exceptional ad takes the cake. "I still call Australia home" is not just an ad, it is more of like a spiritual thing for me. The fact that Qantas did not recruit famous people but rather joined up a girls choir with a boys choir to star in this ad just shows how dedicated they are to the youth of Australia.
http://www.ausgirlschoir.com.au/highlights_qantas.htm
Click on the video at the bottom and im sure it will take you on a journey where Qantas did not really advertise itself but rather all its key destinations and Australian youths at its innocence. And it ends with one of its Boeing 747's cruising steadily into the sunset on top of the Pacific Ocean. Classic!

Gday ..

My favourites would have to be:

I think it was in the early 90's, when BA filmed the ad in Utah, if I remember correctly, where all the people ran across the desert, into a circle which changed to then show a face, and then the world. That was very well done.

Also, some of the Kiwis on a.net might remember these .... The ads for Ansett New Zealand also in the early / mid 90's, with Fluffy the cat and the mislaid keys!!  Wink

I remember them. There were several in the '70s. There was the older "Friendly Skies Of Your Land" which only lasted a short while, which was slightly modified after the new livery rollout (1974-1993). In 1977 United debuted "United We Fly". To my knowledge they sent out music samples for both ad campaigns. There was also a memorable "You're The Boss" campaign in between them, as well as the regional "Our Little Corner Of The World" ads for Hawai'i.

My personal favorites are the heady days of the late '80s when "Rhapsody In Blue" was first used. I remember ads with rich narratives and brilliantly colored depictions of exotic lands.

OK, in no particular order (but with some explanations)
Finnair little Panda- nice and cute
BA The Face -I remembering hearing somewhere that at the time it was the most expensive ad ever made.
Virgin- if you'd have wanted to sleep with him, you'd have married him- very funny ad
American post 9/11 ads- very inspirational
SN Brussels recent ad- funny and cute

Plus, any ad with a Singapore girl and not forgetting 'I wish they all could be Caledonian girls'

I know there's a Delta commercial from the mid-80s that had lots of DL employees standing on and around "The Spirit of Delta" 762, and I believe is was during their "We love to fly and it shows" ad campaign. I consider that one my favorite, only because my dad was in it, as he was a mechanic with them at the time.
If anyone has a link to that commercial, I'd be most grateful.

The Ansett Airlines adverts from the late 70's or 80's in Australia were terrific. I'll bet many Australians remember the adverts, which featured a flying swan turning into a sleek Ansett 727 with the background music of Peer Gynt and images of Leonardo da Vinci.
If anyone has a copy, please let me know. Also the Enya adverts in the 90's, and misc. Qantas adverts which always makes you feel patriotic. Fabulous stuff!!

old British Caledonian ad called: "I Wish They All Could Caledonian."

There was another similar BCal advert, which unfortunately I have been unable to find on the web. The same male passengers, again singing "I Wish They Could All Be Caledonian Girls", were being chased through the airport by intrusive oriental flight attendants offering them cocktails, only to spill it all over them. The F/As were also seen serving dinner on the aircraft, again spilling the meal over the passengers laps or accidentally banging trays/contents of overhead bins on passengers' heads. In the end, the passengers ran away from the flight attendants to end up in the care of calm and professional BCal hostesses.

Hilarious and very effective advertising. However, in today's "politically correct" climate, it would be branded as sexist and racist!
