Is GEG The Worst Airport In The World?

Thu Jun 01, 2006 5:58 am

Just back from a trip from the Pacific northwest and I am convinces that GEG is the worst airport I have ever seen. It was a disaster zone.

Where does it rank in the minds of fellow airnetters?

This thread would be more compelling if you would share some of the reasons why you find this airport to be so horrible.

Why do you hate GEG so much? I have flown out of that airport once, and it isn't that bad. At least it has jetways and ample parking. If you flew Alaska, then don't be surprised if it is crowded, since pretty much all Alaska Airlines terminals for cities that they have a reasonable number of flights are way too crowded or not very nice in some other way (although that is a bit of a generalization).

Now if you want really bad, try Bangalore India. It is way too small, dirty, disgusting, outdated and worst of all has only two jetways for all of the international flights. It is a horrible airport to serve a developing city like Bangalore.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Plus we already established that MSY is the worst airport in the world. MSYtristar said so.

My dad flew out GEG a few times, its not that great... seems very disorganized and crowded... thought its definitely not the worst airport I've ever seen, thinking about it, my vote goes to ATQ (Amritsar, India) thought now it has been "renovated" it was and probably still is very small, the airport building looked like a old barn, a unpaved and uneven parking lot with absoutely no organized parking, its kinda surreal to see a SIA 777 there.

If you can, try our PSC, its a lot smaller than GEG but is somewhat impressive.

IMO, you haven't seen the worse airports in the world until you have seen airports in countries such as India... eventhough things are changing dramatically there as well...i.e. Hyderabad airport and such...

I disagree. I just got back from GEG flying AS out of concourse C. I found it to be a very nice concourse.

LAX 's T-3 on the other hand. Only two choices for food, stained carpet. However, there is some work going on, replacing green tiles on the columns with brown tiles, maybe there is some hope.

it was dirty -- overflowing trash cans, dust, and dirt throughout all the walkways.

there were absolutely no ammenities. there was a "snackbar" that offered personal pan pizzas under heat lamps.

the security was not up to snuff for an airport of GEG's size, which is saying a lot considering how small the airport is. long waits and confusing, disorganized ingress and egress.

i fly out of small airports regularly and am used to the advantages of giving up ammenities for quick access and short walks to the gates. GEG made me long for a place like MSY.

frankly, it was depressing. i've flown out of places like JAX, SAV, and MDT, and they were like palaces compared to GEG.

I would disagree to a point...the AS facilities in ANC and PDX are excellent. SEA, however, I would agree with you. I've gotten to where I avoid changing planes at SEA if I can help it. And of course, as has been mentioned, LAX is a dump.

I've flown out of PSC a lot in my day, and it is a nice experience. If you live in northeastern Oregon, PSC is a great alternative to driving 300 miles to PDX to find a good selection of flights.

You should land in some of the airports around the Med. I was at Rhodes in 2000. I have never been in a tin shed more crowded and full of cigarette smoke, it was like a fog inside the building. Getting on a cramped 757 charter flight back to the UK with no legroom or food was a definite improvement!

I'm on holiday around the world, and so far, from all the 1st world airports I've seen, LAX has to be the WORST airport EVER... the US airports are below other nations (by a considerable margin), but LAX can almost be like a 3rd world airport. Having that airport as a MAJOR gateway to the US is just shameful. Wish that airport would be destroyed and rebuiled... So, I give my vote for LAX!

geg only has a snack bar in the AS side, the A and B terminal has a full restuarant (burgers etc) and is pretty nice, as for the trash what can I say, graduation week brings in tons of people to the area schools.
It's a nice airport for the community it serves (now spokane itself is a dirty city)

Please! GEG isn't even close to the worst airport in the world. GEG is much better than some of the busiest airports in the world (especially LHR and LAX).

There is some remodeling going on right now and that might be some of what you're referring to. However, the AS terminal is pretty new and not bad at all.

I'm not sure I would call it impressive but it's nice to fly out of. A couple more jetways would be nice. Flying out of DFW/LAX makes you appreciate a smaller airport much more.

I've only flown from/to GEG a few times and do not really remember it as being good or bad.

GEG seems to be behind the times when it comes to food service, as for variety.
With all the stone/concrete they used for the main building, they kind of hemmed themselves in when it comes to any expansion of current facilities.
I think the whole rotunda area should be gutted out and reconfigured and to relocate security and gift shop.
This is one airport I really do not like to visit for any reason, but that goes for the city as a whole, not just the airport. I have no valid reason, but I just don't like to go to/through there.

Which airports are "below other nations"..? The variance in the quality among US airports is as great as the variance of quality among airports around the world...

A blank statement like that is tantamount to stating that European airports are "below other nations" by lumping LHR and CDG into the same category as CPH or AMS...  Yeah sure

I've flown into and out of GEG twice; very nice experience on United both times.

Obviously you've never been to ERI. Could someone please tell me why airports with similar/smaller population centers have better facilities and air service. Some examples would be CHO, PWM, BTV and MSN. It is very frustrating watching ERI stagnate while other airports of similar size flourish.
I will have a Manhattan.
