What Is Your Favorite Thing About The Boeing 747?

Sat Jun 03, 2006 6:09 am

Hello everyone

I am a big fan of the Boeing 747. It beautiful, giant and powerful. When 747's take off at full power, they will shank anything near them even a whole terminal. They are also the last giant Boeing clipper built for Pan Am. When they first come out, some people looked at the Boeing 747 as the jet Statocruiser, because it had a luxury cabin with an up stair lounge and double deck cabin like the Statocruiser.
I have seen F-15, F-22A, F-16 and F/A-18 in person but when I see a 747 it just something magical about it. So what is favorite thing about the Boeing 747?

PS: There should some misconception to clear up about the 747. It is the successor to the 707 not the 767 and yes it is a competitor to the L-101! Tri-star and DC-10.

I like it for its sheer size, and the prestige so to speak, of flying what is the worlds largest passenger jet, for the time being at least. Apart from that I'm not very keen on them, I much prefer the 2,4,2 seating of the A330/340 and 2,3,2 of the 767s, where possible I'll fly on these instead. I've done a couple of transatlantics on the 744 and never had to leave my seat - I just don't like the idea of being hemmed in by 2 people next to the window and the extra difficulty in getting out for a walk about in flight. I've got an 11 hour red eye 744 flight coming up in 6 days, so I'll just have to grin bear it!

Cabin Space...The few times I have flown on a 747 I loved the roomy feeling and the ability to walk around and stand in the nooks.

Um, yeah, it really is a common misconception that the 747 succeeded the 767 which first flew 12 years after it was first produced.  Yeah sure

As for my favorite thing... looking at that distinctive nose from the gate, its a special feeling knowing you'll be flying on THE 747.

Oh NO NO NO! Big grin I should have made my self more clear. A lot of people believe the 767 was built to replace the 707. But it was the 747 that was built to replace the 707.

Ah I see... my bad. I should have seen that could be taken multiple ways. Sorry for the kneejerk WHAT!

How graceful she looks on take-off...just absolutely beautiful...unlike it's new competitor that looks like a beached whale.

What I love most about it?? Well, I have a bit of a story to go along with this so here it goes:

My dad is a NWA 747-400 captain, so he & I try to get out to MSP a bunch to get in the sims and fly it when we can. On the #2 and #3 throttles, there are two push-button type switches called the TOGA's (takeoff / go-around).

You can see them in the bottom-left corner

Those will activate your autothrottle system for the takeoff roll, and if you push them while on approach for a go around, they'll give you the appropriate power. If on approach and you push the TOGA's twice instead of once, the plane will give you "maximum available power" because it figures it's either that or you're slamming into the ground (you push the TOGA's twice if you hit windshear or something). So, little did I know the things only needed a single push, so every time we were doing some practice go-arounds at about 200 to minimums, the plane would peg the VSI at 6,000 feet per minute, and we would reach our pattern altitude in about 40 seconds...........and this was all at max landing weight!!! Took my dad a minute to figure out why the plane was acting like a fighter, then he explained to me they only needed the single push!!!

So, that's why I love the thing. Even when it's as heavy as a lead balloon, the thing will still give you 6,000 fpm climbs, and can fly like a fighter. Impressive plane!!

Actually, I don't think it's correct to say the 747 was built to "replace" the 707...

Boeing and Pan Am saw the potential in expanding the size and scope of passenger travel. However, at the time, supersonic travel was supposed to be the "wave of the future"...by 1980 or so, every passenger plane would be flying twice the speed of sound, and the old subsonic planes would be relegated to cargo.

The width of the 747 was designed primarily to fit two side-by-side cargo pallets for when they would eventually be retired and not carrying passengers. In fact, the reason for the upper deck cockpit was to allow an unobstructed front-entry for cargo!! Passenger service was just an after thought.

As the realities of SST travel became apparent, the mission of the 747 changed. It stayed with passenger travel, and although uneconomical in the U.S., longer range and foreign markets proved perfect for this beast. Even today, long range routes of UA and NW have proven this plane is quite useful in its own niche markets.

Now, as to MY personal favorite reason, it is sheer size and scope of the plane that makes it incredible. I remember being very young and at LAX in the early 1970's seeing one of these beasts get airborne. I simply could not believe that anything that big could get airborne.

And when I was nine years old and saw "Airport '75" for the first time, I couldn't have cared less about the sound, the plot, or the B-list of actors...the only star of the show was the plane. Everything else was just filler.

For me, it means the start of another long vacation, and not a "puddle jump" flight from YYZ or YUL to YWG.

I love the sight of the engines, especially during takeoff or landing, sitting just ahead of the wing on the lower deck.... smile

And nothing beats the sound of the 747 engines during commencement of takeoff roll....

I have found a kindred soul on A.net. I love EVERYTHING about the 747! The shape, the way she flies, how all 16 main gear hit the ground all at once when she lands. The 747 is by far the most beautiful machine ever built by man. I love the deep bellowing whine of the PW JT-9s at full power. You hear that sound and you KNOW it's a 747 coming down the runway. When I see a 747 I drop whatever I'm doing so I can gaze in awe at her Majesty. I also love those takeoff rolls where they use almost all the runway and blast right over your head. God, that's a rush!

Check out this popular pic of a 747 strutting her stuff for a crowd:

Funny! I wonder how many people on here get the reference?

As for me, I love the 747 because it is just plain one of the most beautiful, graceful, awe inspiring things I have ever seen.

On occasion I take friends or family to the In & Out by LAX for some plane spotting. Most of the time they are impressed by the aircraft coming to 24R, but when a 747 comes in I see the same look on their face. Utter awe. It truly blows them away!

Yes, absolutely - the very best thing about the 747 classic is the staircase, and best of all the upper deck. Like being on your own private jet.

I also love the forward cabin - especially the front row right up in the nose, sitting slightly side on and looking forward through the first window. Brilliant.

Another cool thing is standing next to one on the tarmac - I worked at JNB before they built the jetways, and meeting an incoming 747 as she taxis onto stand, just huge and immense and awesome, can't beat it.

Tell me about it!! I once went SYD-AKL in a B744, full pax, cargo, no fuel! (alright, about 25%) We use runway 34L which starts out in Botany Bay, we were airborne and well over 500' and in a left turn before we reached the shore line! He took off out of there like a F111.!!
