Just about every US major airport has good and bad points. So, it depends on what you are looking for.

DFW has a good observation area, and is very busy.
ATL is the busiest airport in the world, ORD is #2.
BOS has a lot of different airlines and airplane types, if you can go out in a boat into Boston Harbor, that is the best viewing.
SFO and LAX has a lot of Pacific traffic.
DEN has a lot of open space around the airport, so it might be good for spotting.
JFK has a of middle east airlines.

Most US major airports have major construction projects going on, so that effects the way you get around the airport, and where the airplane treaffic is.

Ooh, yeah, AUS! What's the name of the Tex-mex place in the concourse?

SFO would get my vote. Lots of traffic, beautiful approaches, intersecting runways, and the scenery is second to none. Food options in the UA terminal are good, and from what I've read, it's not a bad place to spot. Plus, you're in (okay, near) San Francisco.

well, OK, not bad but there are better. compared with the usual US fast food desaster areas it was good. The Briskett beef was OK and I was just pleased to see that the local micro brew calls its beer ZIEGENBOCK which translatres to billy goat. Plus, the live music in the afternoon is great.

At least they have some local touch places which is good.

DEN is a great airport visually inside. If you want to spot aircraft taking off and landing, I suggest Gravelly Point for DCA, and the In-And-Out Burger and LAX.

JFK, hands down. Variety of terminals (and the AirTrain to get you between them). Variety of airlines. Variety of planes. Good spotting points for any runway configuration. and of course, it's NYC!

ANC is fantastic. You can hire a bicycle downtown, ride along the beautiful coastal trail till you get to the end of the runway and then get some great photos/views of 747 freighters coming and going mixed in with the usual pax suspects. If that bores you take the short trip to Lake Hood and watch some float planes. When its finally time to leave you can waste away the time at the airport in the observation area. One of my better days you could say  Smile

Just make sure you do it all May-September.

Well, the favorite for a couple of my friends and I is LAX. There is a wide selection of aircraft and airlines. You can see everything from little EMB-120s and Saabn 340s to 744s, 773ERs, 346s, and 345s. Plus, the C parking lot just east of the airport is a great place to go and watch the approaches to the north runways. Whenever we go there, the people who work there seem to welcome us. They stop their buses so as not to impede our shots, they wave at us, and often say hi.

Granted, we all live in the PHX area since we work for HP/US, so LAX is also a very easy airport to get to. I know that JFK has a great selection too, but it is hard for us to make a day trip there. Out here, we can take an early morning flight to SFO to watch planes a while, fly down to Vegas to visit the Airplane Shop, out to LAX to catch the afternoon and evening action, and then back into PHX on one of the late flights.

I think you're probably thinking of Matt's El Rancho. It is good stuff!

This is why I threw AUS out there, because you really do get a feel for what the city of Austin is like, as much as you can by an airport. It has more local flavor than just about any other airport of its size I've seen.

KOA - just because it's in Kona!

If you like big city airports then HNL - just because it's in Oahu!

HLO - just because it's in Hilo, Hawaii!

The original of that restaurant, Matt's Rancho Martinez up here in Dallas, has the best queso in town hands down. Solid Tex Mex food.

Terminal D at DFW also has lots of good food choices. I like ELP just because of the crosswind. Nothing like looking straight out your window while on final and seeing that you are perpendicular to the runway on which you will be landing. Nothing to do inside the airport or city, though. Also like BOS for the harbor approach and the city.

DTW is pretty sweet if flying NW, good food places in it too and a night at the Westin affords some great views.

Hey 777Fan,

I know the place you're talking about. They have the best taco's around! I'm going to take a quick flight this summer from DAL to AUS just to get some taco's and drink a few beers and then head home. I've been known to take long lay overs there just to listen to some of the bands that come there to play. When they have SXSW (South by Southwest) there are many good bands that play there. I've been to over 60 airports and I still love going to AUS.

I second Anchorage in the summer. It's light all day long. Between the international airport, Lake Hood and Merrill Field you have some very unique viewing experiences.

You puttknocker, that ice cream cost me like $8.00!!

My personal opinion is definitely DCA!!! The airport itself isn't that great, but you get to do one of the coolest approaches there is into there......you follow the Potomac River!!! It is damn sweet if you understand how hard (and fun) doing that is!!

Hello.
There's no question, JFK is it. First off, you just get that "different" vibe just from being in NYC. The workers are totally different from every other airport, outside NYC, in the USA. It's just that much better. You might get lucky and find yourself departing on the second longest runway in North America (at 14,572 feet); Runway 31L/13R (and for that matter, you may land on it). Just cross your fingers. On a different note, I strongly agree with Dartland. It's got a variety of terminals and a variety of really everything possible at an airport.
Check it out if you can.

If you wanna see one HELL of an airport, visit the Northwest World Gateway at DTW. When I stepped off my flight last month it was my first time visiting and the spectacular design of the terminal made the hair on my neck stand up. I cant even begin to explain how awesome it is.

Here is a few pics I took:
