DC-9 Or A 727

Tue Jun 13, 2006 5:24 am

Now if there was 2 flights left and they both left at the same time to your destination, and one of the flights aircraft was a DC-9 and the other flight was a 727, which aircraft would you pick and why?
I would have to pick the 727, there is something about it that makes the hairs on my neck stick up, it maybe the sound of the 3 JT8D powerplants or the way it looks when its comming in for landing at MDW, I have no idea...

Ummm....if this crazy scenario would happen, I would have to go with the 727 because I have been on a DC-9 many times, and yes, the 727 is an amazing plane.

Hi,

In this situation I would have to choose the 727, something about a Tri-jet I love, also here in Europe there are a few Airlines still using MD80's, ( SAS, Iceland Express and even occasionally Alitalia) and so can still book flights on these birds.

Can't remember any Airlines still using 727's outside the US, (off the top of my head, tho I may be wrong).

It would be the DC-9 for me, simply because I've never flown on it.

I had a flight scheduled for a DC-9-30 (NW BDL to DTW) in January, but it got cancelled.

Go get a ticket on NW, you probably have about 30 years to do it but I'm sure they will paint the 9's again and keep em!!  Smile

Actually I love both craft so if this senario was to happen I'd sure hope I could fly the 727 1 way and the 9 the other way, if not I'd sure take the 727 and make it a 100.....what a great aircraft those were.

I have flown on both - DL, NW and even going back to the People Express 727's. I would have to choose the 727 though because it was much like the 757 is today - it is a rocket ride.

I would love to see the 727's back in the DL livery stable. How great would that be with the new leather seats and updated interiors. Oh well, guess I will have to go the flight sim and wish.

727 any day. Flown on DL's 727s several times HLN-SLC and back. Once from CVG to RDU, and once from HLN to SFB (by way of MCI). Been on NW DC-9s out of BIL many times. And I'm sure I'll have several more years to get more chances on the -9. I sure miss those 727s though. I love watching FX take off every night out of BIL...

Oh I would choose the DC9. One of my absolute favorites of the classics. Reason? Nostalgia.

The B727 isn't high on my list of interesting planes. Of the tri-holers it comes in second after the L-1011 IMO.

cheers

The 727. There is just something about tri-jets that I like, I don't know what it is.

Man, this is a no-brainer!! 727 all the way!! The DC-9 just doesn't compare to the gorgeous 727. And takeoff is superb in the 727! It is the #1 plane on my "most missed" aircraft that are no longer available to fly.

I'm lucky enough to have flown it numerous times, and I have always enjoyed the sensations, not to mention it's unique look, with the 3 engines at the tail.
Those who want to do something will find a way; those who don't will find an excuse.

I would go with a 727

Here's why -- two pictures -- look at these extended wing flaps

The absolute best!!! I would definitely go with the 727!! No question!!

The one thing I loved the most about it was it's split wing flaps, because of it's inboard ailerons.

I always thought that looked too cool for words.

As far as I know, the 727 is the only aircraft type without wing-mounted engines that has such a flap configuration.

The first two plane types I was ever on back when I was 6 (both EA: DC-9s to Florida, 727s back to BOS).

The 727 was my favorite plane as a kid. I even had a plastic model of an EA 727 (Whisperjet scheme); presently buried in my mother's basement closet.

Nonetheless, from the outside; both the 727 & DC-9 were LOUD. During my childhood spotting days (w/my family) near BOS' 22L landings along Route 145 in East Boston/Winthrop; we always had to fully cover our ears whenever those babies flew overhead.

Unfortunately, my only 727 flights were the fore-mentioned EA DAB-ATL-BOS flights in 1972 and a NW DTW-PHL flight in 2000. I was on more DC-9 flights over the years.
