Largest And Smallest Airports You've Visited

Wed Jun 14, 2006 1:15 pm

What are the largest and smallest airports you've been to, based on passenger counts (or aircraft movements - not actual land or terminal area)? My largest was ATL on a DL transfer(which I expect will be a common answer), and my smallest was probably COS (which ironically has a huge land area), where I was O&D with HP.

Largest, Atlanta or Heathrow (I forget which is bigger).

Smallest, Concord, CA (PSA used to fly there).

If you include heliports as airports, Berkeley Marina or Marin on SFO Helicopter would then be the smallest I've visited.

Largest - Atlanta
Smallest - the helipad in Victoria, BC

(Actually, the smallest airport I've ever seen would be Rutland, VT, but I didn't fly in or out, just stopped to pick up tourist maps & such.)

My largest are LHR, LAX and JFK. As for my smallest that would be my home airport of Pangborn Memorial (EAT) in Wenatchee, Washington. I love the airport even if we only get 5 daily flights from Seattle all of which are on QX. We used to have UX service back in the late 80's and early 90's, but that really didn't last long.

Oh and add LAX to my list of biggest airports

Another small airport that I have been to (but not flown to/from) is Anholt. Very little landing strip. It is in FS so if anyone's curious, you can find it there

Smallest. Nimes, I'd imagine. At the time there were probably 2 flights a day, the Air Inter Mercure from/to Orly.

Smallest: Bora Bora, or Galapagos Islands (Bora Bora on an ATR, Galapagos on a 727)

I've been to many smaller airports while piloting a Cessna 172, but I don't think a grass strip serving GA traffic is what you want here.

Both for me are within 75 miles:

Largest: ATL (from passengers & takeoffs/landings), but also LHR & DEN are big, big, big from number of planes and area.

Smallest: AHN (Athens, GA - where I live), 5000' runway, 1 ticketer/baggage handler, 3 TSA folks & sometimes an off duty Athens police officer and 1 gate. Oh, and one commercial plane, Beech 1900 (US Airways) two roundtrips per day(M-F), one per day (S+S) to one destination - Charlotte. Also, one coke machine and one snack machine.

Planes are almost always full though.

Largest (surface area) - DEN
Largest (busiest) - ATL, ORD, LHR
Smallest - Lady Elliot Island, Queensland. No terminal, just a strip of grass.
- YWH (Victoria Heliport, BC) - just a pontoon in Victoria Harbour.
- UTN (Upington, RSA) - one horse terminal shed with 2 check-in desks and no luggage belts (chap brought the bags to a kind of shelf) - but the longest civil runway in the world (at the time).

Hi,

Largest has got to be :- Heathrow (LHR)

Smallest has got to be :- London City (LCY), either that or Fresno (FAT), depends on flight arrivals/ departures, size of Aircraft, pass numbers, probably gonna be Fresno, ( the smallest big City, as the sign says), on reflection

I do have plans to visit Sumburgh (LSI)

APF Naples Florida is probably one of the smallest considering passenger counts. Presently DELTA has two ASA operated DL Connection flts to ATL on the 40 pax CRJ200 which is usually not full outbound due to the 5,290 foot TORA on the longest available runway.

For small airports St. Barths (St. Bartholemy) French West Indies has to be one of the shortest I've ever flown into commercially.

MNZ, Hamilton Municipal Airport, Texas, 97 aircraft movements per week
ANK, Harriet Alexander Field, Salida, Colorado, 26 movements per day

Largest for me is LHR, flown from all the terminals on countless aircraft and airlines.

Smallest is PLH (Plymouth, Roborough), runway just over a 1000m long, I have flown DHC8, AT4 and C152 aircraft into it. Did a very impressive pull up there last night on a Dash 8, less than 400m biggrin
