Really ? It's OK, but all it is is canefields and bits of Port Louis, for the most part.

Nossy Be is cool, flying in over the islands, very clear water and the odd reef here and there.

SYD has a wonderful approach if you come in from the north, with the harbour out to the right.

The old approach into HKG was spectacular - looking into people's living room windows.

The approach into one of LGA's runways (don't know which) comes round in a big circle over Manhattan - that is spectacular too.

I like the approach into NCE, along the coast, especially if they take the path out to sea round Cap d'Antibes, then the sharp left turn over Antibes and in. Mind you, the approach from the other side, past Villefranche, then the sharp turn left over the Promenade and in - kewlll...

SAN was going to be my response...there simply is no way to describe - you must experience it for yourself!

BFL has a very interesting approach - as you descend over the desert, you find yourself very low over the tehachapi mountains, in fact flying very close to Bear Mountain. Then the mountains drop to the valley floor, and onto runway 30.

My flight last year MSP-LAS lined itself up directly over Hoover Dam - that is an amazing sight to see!!

I have always loved the approach to HNL as well - circling around the north side of O'ahu giving the passengers an unrestricted view of a large portion of the coastline.

I took some spectacular pictures of the north side of the big island of Hawai'i on approach to Hilo...the views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa (not to mention Molokai, Maui, Lanai, and Kaho'olawe) are unreal. If you would like to see, let me know, and I'll e-mail you some of the approach pictures!

In the United States I think Seattle is the most beautiful on a clear day. The whole region is gorgeous with the city and lakes on the sound and surrounded by forests and moutains.

I enjoyed a rather spectacular approach to Bastia, Corsica when our Airbus 319 from made like a slalom between the mountains and through the valleys, as the mountains in Corsica are extremely high and landed in nothern direction. Very nice scenery.

I would agree with SEA and SAN but....

the best 3 are

Ducth Harbor
Sitka
Kodiak

with kodiak and sitka you fly right over the water and can see the town and beautiful mountains. as for Ducth, you come in low and fly just beside a mountian (it seems like your wing is going to scrape the mountain) then you make a sharp 90 degree turn and decend about 1000 feet in a few seconds and land on a 3000 ft runway....this was fun when the 737's and Electras still flew in there. this approach gets really fun when theres a mile of visability and 30 knot winds in the snow

My personal favourites are:

MLE (Male, Maldives. Definitely beats any other airport in the world)
SXM
BEY (if you are on the left hand side of the plane)
ZRH
MIA
SSH (Sharm El Sheikh)
IST (Short runway, you see almost the whole city)
NCE
HAJ (I thought we'd hit a cow once, nice country side)
GVA

The approach to BMA is quite nice. Since it's a city airport, you fly very low over peoples houses. I almost thought we were going to land on someones rooftop when we hit the runway!  Smile

The approach over Lake Michigan to ORD is also beautiful when you have the entire windy city on display.

LHR - as mentioned if you do the approach over Central London. For those who haven't done it before its a great view out of the right hand window.

YVR - the coast, the islands, the mountains, the city - wow !

CPT - beautiful (except for the slums!)

GVA - lovely view of the lake and the city and the Alps to the south.

I've never been there, but I assume the downtown Rio airport must give a view and a half as well  Smile

i am quite partial to CLE, not only is it my hometown, but when flying in from ORD you usually do a great pass of the city over the lake, and at dusk or at night, with the city lit up, and some lights on the lake, it is really nice, and its always good to be home. and i have never been, and it is no more, but Meigs field was probably something special.

Corfu is very beautiful, I heard that pilots just love this approach (even though they have to be very exact, since the runway length is very limited)

I also enjoy the approach into SFO every time, the view over the City is breathtaking, and with enough luck, you get a nice view from an outbound flight as well.

The best two from my experience:

Coming in to COS from the west is a cool approach, even at night. We normally wouldn't be able to see the mountains just barely to our left, except that it was a full moon and the sky was a dark blue, offsetting the black mountains. I bet during the day it is really cool seeing how close the mountains get.

PVR is kind of like this as well but less so. But aircraft do a lot of weaving to avoid the terrain on the approach here, and the tropical setting adds to it a bit.

PHX is okay if you come from the northeast, as it is quite mountainous until you enter The Valley.

DCA and LAS are both cool just because of the landmarks of Washington and the Las Vegas Strip (night is best in LAS, especially with the Luxor)

Then some are really boring of course, like DEN from the east. You go over big fields. Yawn. IAH isn't much better.

How about ORD? Approaching from the East, one is greeted by Lake Michigan, and then the faint outline of Chicago begins to come into view. Soon, the jet jogs north, offering a close up of the skyscrapers, then on final a 3rd, nice city view to the south.

Beirut Airport approach onto the sea runway - specially if you're sitting on the left side of the aircraft.

GVA approach if you're coming in over the lake (otherwise its not that great).

One of my very favorites is the approach to SLC. With the close mountains, the Great Salt Lake, and especially at times when it is clear blue sky with snow a good ways down the mountain slopes, I think this approach is just spectacular!

Of course, I always enjoy seeing Mt Rainier when flying to SEA.

I think any approach is beautiful, it just depends on whether it is boring or not!

CHC if you're flying in on a trans-Tasman flight over the Southern Alps.

HKG (Kai Tak) was brilliant to watch from anywhere, pity I don't actually remember what it was like to land ...  Sad

SYD - if only because it's my home city and I know it so well. Great to see the sparkle of the harbour and the sea. And relief on seeing the sea of lights if it's one of those longhaul arrivals in the pre-dawn.  Smile

ANC . . on a clear day, arriving from the East or the South. Over Alyeska, then decending through 7000 coming up Turnagain Arm, slight left turn and decending through 3000 with the entire city of Anchorage out to the right side of the aircraft; continue with a wide sweeping right turn 180 degrees and line up on 7R about 8-10 miles out and come right in over Fire Island with the city of Anchorage now visible out the left side of the aircraft.

Definately the DCA River Approach. Never really experianced it as a passenger on a commercial jet though-pre 9/11 we flew into DCA often with our Cessna 414 and got the River App to 18 with a sidestep at the last moment, putting us directly above the Pentagon.

Nadi (NAN) was the first that came to mind, coming in from the south, with the sugarcane fields and market gardens underneath and to the right, the Sabeto Range in front of and to the right of the aircraft, the turquoise waters to the left, sprinkled with the little white and green islands of the Mamanuca Group.

Whangarei is very good... fly in over a sparkling blue harbour between forest covered hills, then bank sharply to land on what looks like a green aircraft carrier - a levelled off hill, on which the airport sits, almost surrounded by water. And the runway doesn't seem much longer than an aircraft carrier, either (!)

And flying around Mount Taranaki on a clear winters day, heading for New Plymouth is really beautiful... the almost perfect white cone 2500m+ high, the tussock, the forest, the Pouakai and Kaitake Ranges, then over the city of New Plymouth and finals for Runway 05/23.
