Best Trans-Atlantic Carrier

Wed Jun 21, 2006 8:27 pm

Hi,
Going on Holiday to the west coast of the US in Autumn, just wandering who the best carrier to fly London to San Francisco/Los Angeles is ? Had a quick look and prices seem roughly the same. Would be flying economy.

Regards NST

I'd say Virgin Atlantic to LAX on the A340-600.

In my view I would take DL from LGW to ATL then onto San Francisco or LA from there. This is from someone who is not bothered by PTV's though, and in terms of service, I have found DL the best, followed by UA which would be a nice ride on a 777 from LHR.

Either Virgin or BA, maybe American if they do the route

If you want direct - BA

Connecting - DL or CO

I would not even bother with UA as "in my opinion" has fallen off the face of the earth when it comes to service either in First or Coach. I flew Virgin couple of years back from JFK to LHR and just was not impressed. I mean it was fine but not exceptional like BA or even DL/CO.

Now, this comes from my experience in both First & Coach to from LGW/CDG/BRU/BCN/FCO from ATL, EWR & JFK on DL, CO, BA, AF, LH & Virgin.

Air New Zealand LHR-LAX-LHR. You get the refurbished 744 with all the bells and whistles. As well as 2 extra inches of legroom Big grin

Whilst I have never flown with them, I have heard that Air New Zealand is very good and they fly LHR-LAX. As ZKSUJ says you get the refurbished 744 with all the extra trimmings and a couple extra inches of legroom - can make a big difference on a flight over 10 hours.

Otherwise, go with BA. Best for frequencies, best for fares, best for consistency in standards of service, and friendly and professional crews.

If, however, you want to fly an airline that offers an experience like a Club 18-30 trip or a kids' birthday party, and possibly the most uncomfortable seat in Y class, go with VS.

VS is changing that flight back to a B747-400 soon.

BA 777 or BA 747. Maybe VS A346 but preferably BA. AA if BA is unavailable, or maybe CO or US or DL. Not UA

LX through ZRH.

I've flown a lot of airlines across the pond, and in my opinion, Swiss is the best airline out there service-wise, especially in Cattle Class. The legroom isn't terrible, and while the IFE may not be as awe-inspiring as VS's, it certainly does the trick. The food is good, the FA's are friendly, and you can't beat the complimentary Swiss chocolate right before landing. I always love that part of the flight, haha.

From London, I am a huge fan of BA. Complete Transatlantic, I also love Air France and South African. Yes, I know those last two have no purpose when flying London-USA, but they ARE transatlantic  Smile

I believe VS 23/34 are now all A346 along with the 744 for VS 7/8.

A lot of people like the NW birds across the atlantic, PTV's, good food, free drinks and such. A lot of people like it, you could fly LGW-DTW-SFO/LAX. Then on the way back LGW-MSP-LGW, I believe that MSP flight is still a DC-10 and those will be gone soon!
