Biggest Airline Rivalry?

Sat Jul 01, 2006 8:36 am

Which two airlines do you feel have had the best rivalries? I'd put my top five as follows:

1. American vs. United: the two largest airlines in the world, sparring for decades.
2. Pan Am vs. TWA: the great international rivalry for nearly half a century.
3. British Airways vs. Virgin Atlantic: colorful Branson against the BA establishment.
4. Delta vs. Eastern: Different origins but similar networks.
5. easyJet vs. Ryanair: Stelios and O'Leary.

Other possibilities: American vs. Southwest, Delta vs. JetBlue (still young), United vs. Northwest, Emirates vs. Etihad (also young)

I realize that my list may seem very Amero-centric, but I feel like the best rivalries arehave been those that within the same country. Your thoughts?

This topic came up a few months back, and I'll say now what I said then.

At least in my mind, there is no rivalry in the history of the airline industry that matches the bitterness or downright contempt between ...

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic

Personally, I regard this as the grand-daddy, end-all-be-all of airline rivalries.

VS and BA was the first thing that came to my mind too. My money's on Virgin.

I also think Air Canada/Westjet could be a good contender. Westjet has dared to take on the socialist goliath of a sad excuse for an airline that is Air Canada.

easyJet and Ryanair co-exist pretty peacefully, and are only just starting to add same city combinations in competition with eachother.

The Nordic area:

SAS vs. Finnair

These two keep each other busy, both outside and inside the Nordic area: both have created a LCC (Blue1 & Flynordic) to harm the ark rival.

Finnair is growing faster (especially to Asia) and it is in better shape, but the bigger SAS is still hitting back - meaning better deals for us Nordic travellers.

Braniff vs Southwest and Braniff vs American were two big rivalries back in their day. Also Varig vs TAM, Air Canada vs Canadian Airlines are some that I can think of.

First things that sprang to my mind were WN vs AA and Pan Am vs TWA.

BA vs VS is a big one, yes, but Pan Am vs TWA was the original... and no one's had more rivalries than AA.

AA and WN are not really rivals, Crandall and Kelleher were, and are still, really good friends.

To justify my selection of American and United:

The two have been arch rivals since the end of World War II, and have swapped 1 and 2 spots in the (Western) world a few times. Any move by one demanded an immediate response from the other. Examples include:
-Sabre vs. Apollo and other travel agent arenas.
-Chicago.
-United buys its way into Heathrow via Pan Am. American follows immediately via TWA.
-American buys Eastern's South America routes. United follows buy purchasing Pan Am's routes.
-United announces it will buy US Airways. American counters with TWA.
-Earlier examples involving coast-to-coast service, I'm sure.

Have to agree with those who say that the BA/VS war is the king of all airline rivalries. It is the most explicit, most amusing one where they literally trash talk each other; none of the others really come close in terms of direct finger-pointing. Compared to BA/VS, the other traditional rivalries are nothing but gentlemanly bouts. The next closest is probably Pan Am vs. TWA in the old days but then that was more of a fight between Juan Trippe and Howard Hughes rather than really between the two companies.

A HUGE rivalry of the past was Continental/United.

Of course, the once highly profitable and highly arrogant United hammered Continental into the ground at every turn...especially at Denver.

Watching Continental evolve into a very respectable and PROFITABLE airline as United's employee-ownership strategy ran them into the dirt has been an absolute delight.

I really hope that Continental merges with United and escorts off the premises every single UAL manager that was part of that revolting, arrogant corporate culture of the 80's and 90's.

Talk about a reversal of fortune. All thanks to Gordon and the employees who were willing to change the way they thought and did business.
Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

Interisland there's not much difference IMO - and I've flown both AQ and HA interisland plenty of times - except the airframe. Across big water, the 767s vs the 737s? No rivalry, the 767s win.

How about WN and any carrier's hub in which it invades.

Back a few years, AS and MarkAir . . . MarkAir got pummeled and rightfully so . . . they sucked. But AS had to cut their tix prices on a few routes . . .

BA/VS, they (usually VS) just make punches at each other, Richard Branson wanting to buy Concorde, deliberately comparing BA club world to VS upper class, painting no way BA/AA on their aircraft(s) and Richard Branson offering little competition's to BA, once he challenged Rod Eddington to let 5 passengers travel on BA club world, then on VS upper class, who ever lots the competition, had to dress up in the other airline's cabin crew uniform and be cabin crew on a flight.
Though i'm not saying BA are always whiter than white.

I would say Air Canada vs WestJet, it has the story of corporate spying, predatory pricing, and the launch of Zip, a Western discount carrier, to try and destroy WestJet.

Also, if you look back to the late 90s, Air Canada vs Canadian Airlines, aka Red vs Blue was a huge rivalry, which ended up with the red eating up the blue.

Ryanair v Aer Fungus is one of the most significant European rivalries of recent times. Although Ryanair have a rivalry against practically every carrier/airport operator/local or national government in Europe, Aer Fungus were forced to completely rebrand themselves solely as a result of Ryanair's growth.
