If You Could Buy Out An Airline

Fri Jul 07, 2006 2:13 am

I've been pondering again...

If you could buy out a whole airline, all it's aircraft, everything, who would it be and why? What changes would you make?

Thanks

It would be Varig!
I'd ask Bill Gates to GIVE me something around 20 Billion Dollars (I know he would!  Wink ), then I'd pay all of RG's debts, retire all of their aircraft, except for two 777 (PP-VRA/B) and two 737-700 (PR-SAF/G).
Then I'd get 60 737-700, 30 737-800, order 10 787-9, 5 787-8 and 8 777-200ER.

I'd change all the interiors, putting PTVs with AVOD and all the most modern of IFE, installed in some Etihad's (777-300ER) style economy class seats in ALL aircraft.
The 737 would have 2 classes, and the 787 and 777 wolud have 3 classes with suites in first and bed style in business class, not lie-flat with inclined seats (like LH).
The Smiles program would continue the same.

I'd buy out the current Pan Am and restore the Blue Ball to its old glory. But first, I'm going to steal the gold reserves of the industrialised world... (Please, don't tip off the guys at Fort Knox that I'm coming!  Wink)

Would be Air Canada (Air Toronto) and provide more services to rest of the country...

YVR to Europe and Polynesia,
YUL more to Europe and slowly adding South america and Asia bring back TLV
YHZ to Europe,
YYT to LHR,
YEG and YYC deserve more nonstop route...

Utilising the fleet in the winter during weekend for south destination from Maritmes, Quebec and western Canada not only YYZ

It is Air Canada not Air Toronto

NW, turn it around, I would run the Southwest ad from the 70's the "Remember what it was like before Southwest" with some passengers saying, yeah, we actually got great service, good food, a ton of aminities and airlines were profitable. Take NW way back to its roots with onboard service and such. WN the airline that destroyed what airlines should be.

I'd buy AS and accomplish the following:

Send Menzies packing and reinstate AS staff.

Increase the SNA - SEA frequency by a couple of extra hops on Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays.

Get ETOPS certification for the 737-800's and start an SEA - HNL and LAX - HNL hop, and depending on demand, possibly purchase or lease a couple of 767's for that route.

Purchase or lease a couple of 777's and start SEA - EDI and LAX - EDI routes. For no other reason than I absolutely love EDI with a passion.

Cathay Pacific.

Redo Dragonair and upgrade the size of planes used - 787s or something. Merge it into the CX fleet and expand to more Asian destinations, possibly even to Australia. Interlink some cities rather than just base everything in HKG. Widen the cargo network with some 748F orders and upgrade their seats and IFE. Make a few round-the-world flights - HKG-LAX-LHR-HKG for example. Haha doubt whether there will be enough funds for this!
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

QX! I would go with Q400's all the way. If there is a Q500, i'd buy that for sevice like SEA-GEG, SEA-BOI etc. Serve heavy West Coast especially in California. I'd hedge fuel. I would lease out the Q200's, not sell. I'd work as close as possible with management/labor. I'd get deeper into the small package/air cargo market. Robert NWDC10

I'd buy BMI and give it an a.net management... that way they may actually come up with a business strategy!

(Oh, and I'd have to base a couple of aircraft at MSE too  crazy  )

I'd buy FlyBe, and establish a base at HUY or DSA with domestic flights to NQY, EDI, INV, LGW (or Southend), SOU and CWL. I'd also buy a 752 for a daily Flybe flight to EWR Big grin

I would buy Northwest, and announce to A-net when all the DC-9s would be retired! ! !
I wouldn't say what the replacements are, just to keep the threads going.

Sorry to steal your thunder but I'd also want to buy out Iberia.

I'd make some modifications to the fleet and upgrade the economy product on the long-haul aircraft. I'd also make sure that each aircraft in the fleet was washed at least once a month!

With the long-haul fleet I'd replace the 18 A340-300s with 14 A330-200s and order six more A340-600s. With the short-haul fleet I'd retire the MD-87/88s as well as the 757-200s. I'd order more A319s and order some A318s.

The economy product would be updated by adding PTV's with AVOD.

Fleet:

19 A340-600
14 A330-200
11 A321
25 A320
10 A319
18 A318

I'd also add some new routes and frequencies.

BA

Merge it with the other oneworld members and merge with Emirates. Then begin to replace aircraft that are getting on a bit using Emirates turnover. Make the new group of airlines world conquering with the best service and the best aircraft. Use the old aircraft to form a leasing company. Buy out various low cost airlines from each oneworld country and utilise them on profitable short haul routes, replacing the oneworld carriers economy class. Then for the short haul business destinations or the popular luxury destinations configure A318's to WTP, CW and First. Leave long haul as it is unless low-cost long haul becomes popular in which case I would use the same philosophy.

I was on a flight last weekend and was watching those boneheads at "work". One guy had another in a headlock and was pretending to punch him in the face , while another co-worker drove off in one of those luggage transports and ran over two traffic cones.

I'd want a profitable one and not do anything other than let the current management do what they are doing correctly. So good options would be British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, Singapore Airlines or Qantas since they are some of the most profitable airlines in the world. I'd stay as far away from owning an airline in North America as possible.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Idiots!! I too have witnessed such idiocy. It's only a matter of time before they start playing 'dodge the suction' in front of an engine as it spools up and someone gets sucked in.

Hmmm..

I would much rather start small..

I'd buy Florida Coastal Airways.. it has a small fleet of simple aircraft that could turn a good profit... change the name to Phenix Airways.. non-unionized.. LEAN staffing/spare parts, etc... paid upgrade to BizClass only.. no FF program (overate and not necessary).. Free meals.. Dual boarding via airstairs for 170 & 190..

I would change the fleet to:
20 Cessna 402C (Point-to-Point flights out of MIA, Outer Banks)
5 Embraer 145 (Point-to-Point flights out of EWN, RDU, SAV, ILG, etc)
10 Embraer 170AR (Point-to-Point flights out of RDU, PVD, ORF, HPN, MSY, NAS, etc)
8 Embraer 190AR. (Point-to-Point flights out of RDU, MIA, PVD, etc)

Focus city: RDU
All others P2P based on demand
Aiming High and going far..
