VS, BA, GF Or LH To JNB?

Sat Jul 08, 2006 7:40 pm

I've been getting prices together for a return trip from England to Johannesburg.

GF is coming out the cheapest, but it's a bit of a long trip. Leaves NCL at 6:00am and arrives JNB at 5:50 the following morning, via LHR and BAH. On the plus side, I'd get to clock an A330-200.

LH times are better, via DUS and FRA, and I'd get to clock a BAe 146-300 and a Canadair CRJ-200.

I've been on BA and VS before and I know the service on both is pretty good. Never been on an A340-600, so that would make a change if I went with VS.

What are LH and GF like?

VS. Definitely VS. The IFE alone is worth it and our A346s are gorgeous. Always have very positive comments from passengers on JNB flights.

True... some of the FA's aren't bad either.

It's interesting how much cheaper (approx £880 versus £580) a VS return starting in JNB is compared to a VS return starting in NCL.

I get regular trips home, so I might book LH from NCL in August, with a return in May 2007. Then book my trips home on VS, starting in JNB.

I just did JNB-LHR-JNB on SAA, 744 there and 346 back. Great service, good food, good IFE (AVOD), pity about the delayed departure from JNB due to problems with the No 2 thrust reverser but apart from that it was a good trip. I know SAA is expensive but if price is the issue then take the cheap flight on GF. Did you check EK?

SAA is another airline I've always fancied trying, but they cost another £200 on top of VS and BA. I was also looking at using the LH ticket (code share) to catch one of their A340-600's from FRA. But the minute you select an SA flight, the LH ticket price goes up significantly.

The problem with EK is that I can't find a website which will give me a single price from NCL to JNB. All I have been able to get so far is one price for the BA section (NCL to/from LHR) and another for the EK sector (LHR to/from JNB).
Can anybody tell me a website which will provide both as a single price?

Andz, do you know any decent booking websites in South Africa. I've tried Flight Centre, but you have to email them your route details. They don't provide a price on-line.

Varig I can't say I do, I usually have all my flight arrangements made for me! I flew 346 LHR-JNB this past week, I'm sure you could get a 346 flight on SAA without having to go via FRA.

Personally speaking I would go on GF. Their service is exceptional and 2nd to none. The 332's are great because they have PTV's (lacking in LH) and they have a bigger seat pitch in economy than BA, VS and LH. Also, the scenery when landing in BAH is really amazing, especially the reefs.

Well worth going the longer way with quality than going the fastest way and not enjoying the comfort and service if you ask me.

Is you could not go on GF then my 2nd option would be BA as they were voted airline of the year by Skytrax. LH would be my last option.

I can certainly understand why...  Wink

Interestingly enough, the price doesn't change a bit if you book them from within Germany - regardless of whether you take a "real" LH flight or the (greatly preferrable) SAA flight with LH flight number.

Interesting to read that SAA is so expensive in the UK - over here, they're usually cheaper than LH (that is if you book SAA-flightnumbers instead of SAA flights with LH flightnumbers) - combined with better service and comfort, it makes the choice between those two quite easy.

Take the CPT-LHR vv flight. It is daily and operated with 346. JNB-LHR vv. are mainly on a 744 and within the next few weeks, no regular 346 is scheduled on this sector.

I got my flights booked on Monday. Ended up doing the following route:

LH-4951 - NCL-DUS - CRJ-200

The best thing about this route is that I get to clock the CRJ-100, the BAe 146-300 and the 737-500, which I have never flown before. Normally LH-800 is operated by an A319. But for some reason it's a 735 on the day I fly.

I was actually advised by a German not to fly LH, because he thought they were rubbish. But I just like trying different airlines, whether they are good or bad.

Reckon I'll still have to do another two return trips to Jo'burg, so I'll have to work out who else to try next. Apparently AF are going to start using 777's from CDG, so I might even try flying with them again. Emirates is also another option.

Thanks for all your advice,

I also heard that, which is just great news for the JNB route. Those 77W are amazing and sure beat the 744s. Next up, it's just KLM and LH who have to get some IFE on the JNB route.  Wink

I hope you are not economy on LH744... its among the worst for legroom in the industry. Almost shameful to say the least... like i would pay GBP200 to avoid it any time of the day or night.

varig_dc10. Don't say I didn't warn you. OK? I don't know anybody who would willingly put themselves through LH B744 Y class again. I guess on the brightside, you can laugh about it because it is so awful! And regardless of what I say, you will be surprised for the worse!

Wait, VS sends the A343 to JNB, not the A346 last time I looked.

Did this start recently?? As of last September, they were operating the A343 and 747 during peak periods.

I'm not sure when it started but I flew as crew on the A346 back in June and it is scheduled to stay that way.

Due to the new restrictions in place at British Airports, all hand luggage must go in the hold, including laptops.

I'm a bit concerned about sending my laptop all the way to JNB in the hold. The last couple of times I've flown to JNB, my cases have been cracked.
So I was thinking of retrieving my hold luggage at FRA.

Assuming my hold baggage makes the connection at DUS, I will have 4.5 hours to get through security at FRA, retrieve my hold luggage, check it back in again, then get back through security for my flight to JNB.

What is security like at FRA normally? Will 4.5 hours be enough time?

Thanks,

I have found FRA to be the fastest in and out airport I have been through. Baggage claim seems quick (maybe because it is such a long way to walk that the baggage gets there before you!) and security going out is pretty quick too.

Disclaimer: this was before the current step up in alerts, but I think 4 and a half hours should be plenty.

You are right to be concerned, it might make it safely all the way here and then be swiped by the baggage handlers.

ZKNBX,

The seat I had on the 747 from FRA to JNB wasn't that bad. It didn't feel any worse than the one I had on KLM a few months back.

I thought the service was quite good as well. The meals were definaltey better than KLM.

All three flights arrived within 5 minutes of the scheduled time. Talk about German efficiency.

The only cock up happened at Jo'burg. Although the flight was on time, the air bridge was broken. So it took them 15 minutes to sort out some steps.

The morning I flew, the restrictions on taking laptops into the cabin was lifted. So I didn't have to pick my case up at FRA. But I reckon I would have had plenty of time to get it if had been necessary. Like Andz said, FRA is a pretty quick in and out airport. There wasn't much hanging around at DUS either.

Been looking at routes for my trips home in October and Xmas. Looks like Virgin in October, so I can clock an A346. Then Emirates at Xmas so I can have a look round Dubai and clock a 772, 773 and possibly an A332. Although I'm finding it difficult to work in the Newcastle connection for the A332.
