Can You Remember Your 1st Flight?

Sun Jul 09, 2006 4:14 am

I cannot remember my 1st, I was still an infant. But the first one I do remember was when I was about 5 or so. It was a 747 BOS-ORD-SFO on AA. I remember my dad getting drunk in the upstairs lounge.

Indeed!

My first flight was in a glider - no engine - no noise but the wind. Truly amazing. I then flew in many many military aircraft but my first 'commercial' flight was aboard a Boeing 707 - absolutely lovely.

I remember them well.

There is 1 'first' flight that I have yet to make - and I don't know why I haven't done it. I want to fly in a DC3. Yes - it's one of my dreams.

Cheers!

Absolutely, though I couldn't tell you the exact plane. I was four, my grandparents took me to the local GA field and chartered a plane for an hours sightseeing trip. It was a tail dragger and between them, me and the pilots, there were no extra seats.

My first commercial flight was on an AA 727 from ELP to DAL, connecting to TPA, June of 71.

Not sure if remember is the right word, but it was NCL-LHR in July 1971 on a Northeast Trident.

Yes.
September 1983. World Airways DC-10-30, BWI-MCI-OAK. Was a great flight on a great airplane. That was back in the day when we got a full meal, on each leg of the flight! Transcon, back and forth, with four meals!
I must confess, that mt BWI-OAK trip was much nicer than on the way back. I was seated at the window on the way out, with only one other person in a 3x seating. On the way back, on the OAK-MCI leg, I was in the middle, stuck between a very quiet woman, and a large, smelly guy. I'm glad he got off in MCI. Then I got to move to the window!

June 1970 on a Air West F-27 from SFO-CIC-RDD-LMT. What a comfortable plane for regional service. Another thing I remember is that they left one engine running at each stop.

I can't remember mine, since I was only around 8 months old. But I know that it was on either AA or UA and from LAX-IAD. The first flight that I can remember was on US flying to DCA when I was four years old.

Maybe 12 or so years ago on a flight from LAX to Orlando to go to Disney World. It was on United on some widebody (I THINK DC-10) and there is a picture of me sitting in the middle seat of the middle section with one of the most uneasy looks ever on my face. The irony is that I'm now starting my senior year at Embry-Riddle with almost 200 hours flight time and I'm going to be applying to the Coast Guard with hopes of flying for them.

My first was in early 1980 when I was 3....

BDL area to LAX area (specifcally to Torrance, CA)

Don't remember anything about it myself, but my Mom tells a story where I somehow wandered away from her in coach (she was pregnant with my sister at the time and gets motion sickness under normal circumstances, so she was hopped up on the dramamine). Well, I walked up into first class, and snatched a piece of steak off of some guy's plate. I understand the guy laughed when I did it!

When I was 9 my father was still working at Grumman and I would go to work with him sometimes on the weekend. My first flight happened on Saturday when my father was asked by a test pilot if it was okay for me to go on a ride in an F-14 (I was too young to remember which sub-type). My first ride was Calverton to Norfolk in an F-14!!!!

The first airplane I was ever on was a Pan Am 747 from SFO, maybe going to LHR, but I don't remember it at all, as I was too young. The first flight I actually remember being on was a UA 747-122 from SFO to HNL.

Not at all! I was 18 months old and flying in a British Airways SkyCot from LHR to BOM!

This was in 1989... would the plane have been a 741 or a 742?

Considering that most of a.net member base is relatively young, I would think that the large majority of individuals here on a.net were too young on their first flight in order to remember anything about it. I know that for myself, my first flight was EWR-LAX on UA when I was six months old - I can't exactly say that I remember too many of the details.

I remember my first flight very easily, since it was only 10 years ago... OK ATR 72 from BTS to PRG, then OK ATR 42 PRG to AMS..
However, it wasn't the first contact. I've tried how looks the cockpit of SU7 and MIG 21 from inside. Unfortunately, only on ground...

Most parts of it.
I was 6 years old and it was 1978.
The routing was LAX-SFO, SFO-RNO, RNO-SFO, SFO-LAX on Western.
All legs were on a B-727-200.
Here is all what I remember:
Taking a taxi to a Sambo's restaurant where we caught the coach to LAX.
I remember most of the LAX part of the trip, especially going through security.
All I can remember during the flight is getting some "kiddie" wings and that I had a cola and almonds. Imagine that-almonds!
I do remember the plane change at SFO, and can still picture it.
I remember arriving at RNO and there were no jetways at that time. I saw a Hughes Airwest DC-9 on the ramp in RNO.
I don't remember much from the return. I think I was too tired and the thrill of a first flight was gone.

Unfortunately I can't, though I was about 1 year old and it was a scenic flight around my home airport CFS in a DC-3.

I have pics which I'm happy about of the captain holding me on the flightdeck with the ancient instuments around me.

I cannot remember my first flight because I was 3 months and two weeks old. I guess that's why I'm fanatic about airplanes. My mother lived in France and my father lived in Brazil so I guess that explains a part of it.

I can remember my first flightS though. I remember that when I was very small I used to sleep on the ground, between our seats (my mom's and mine) and the seats ahead of us. I lied across the two rows, it was quite nice, not so warm, but the noise from the wind vibration made me feel asleep.

I guess that's why the only place in the world where I feel really good, I mean, heavenly well.

I remember being absolutely sure the plane was going to do barrel rolls and no one, not even the Captain could convince me otherwise.

I've only flown one other tri-holer, an MD-11, and hated it.

Like yours, my first flights were as infant on the Noratlas (German Air Force) between Portugal and Germany. But I vividly remember my first commercial flight:

I was 17, and we chartered a B747-200 of LH to join the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Kananaskis, Alberta (1983). Flight was FRA-YYC/YVR-FRA!

Nope. I, like the OP, was but a few weeks old when I took my first flight to YYB on an AC DC-9 (I think)

The first flight I can remember taking was YYZ-TPA on an AC 747 back when I was four or five ('82 or '83). Flew upper deck, and had swivelling seats. Was pretty cool  Smile

My first flight was at an openday at RAF Lyneham, where they took people up in C-130s for short flights. I was about 6 I guess.

Theres nothing like staring out the back of a C-130 with the ramp down at a couple thousand feet!
