What Do You Call The L-1011

Fri Jul 14, 2006 6:00 pm

So I was watching a random programme on Discovery Wings last night and they were discussing breaking up old Tri-Stars and every time he spoke of the aircraft he (the narrator) referred to it as the L-TenEleven!

So my question is how do you refer to the venerable Tri-Star?

Tri-Star
L-TenEleven
L-OneZeroOneOne
L-OneThousandAndEleven?

And what is the official line on this?

Cheers,

Spru!

I usually just called it the Tristar, but if I feel like getting technical, I usually go for L-ten-eleven!

It depends on what the definition of official line is. I guess a jet can be called whatever its owner wants it to be called. If AA had a fleet of the above mentioned a/c then theirs would've been called (L) 1011 Luxury Liners

I call it the best widebody ever produced but the worst one marketed. I remember when it first came out (late 70s) in Saudi Arabia everyone just said Tri-Star. Now it seems as if L-1011 was more popular before most of them were mothballed.

For me it will always be known as a TriStar. Unfortunately, like many other classics flying, they don't visit Manchester often enough. Usually the odd Portuguese charter.

Mainly the Tristar, if not that, then the EL-ten-eleven.

In some maintenence circles, it was referred to as the "Tritanic".

I've never heard ANYONE refer to the "L1011" like that before. It's strictly the L10, L1011, 1011, TriStar. However, if you're an old Eastern Flight Attendant, you've certainly called it....

"El-Ten-Elemon"
"Swamp Buggy"
"FrightStar"

That's all I can think of at the moment.

The official Lockheed name is L-1011. To continue the Lockheed tradition of naming aircraft after stars, Orion, Vega, Starfighter, Starlifter they added the name TriStar. The Manufactures Model Number is L-1011-385 with several sub models, -1, -14, -15 and -3.

Though I only had the pleasure (and it was) of flying on her once (CDG-JFK on TWA in 1986), I found her nickname of "WhisperJet" to be very apt as it was one of the quietest rides I have ever experienced (especially compared to the racket the 767-200 JFK-LHR made going over).

I pronounce "L-1011" as "El-Ten-Eleven".

In my bagsmasher days, we had a contract with ATA, loading their all-coach Hawaiian flights. They flew L1011s and they used no containers, so we had to manually load all the bags/cargo into the pits. So we called it the "HELL1011" at the time. But I call it "tristar" nowadays.  Wink

Almost every pilot who ever flew the 1011, as well as most flight attendants who ever served on the 1011 would totally disagree. To them, it was the best plane they ever had the privilege to serve on.

I usually call it the "ten-eleven".

The L10 was the only airplane out there that I have been on that continually fools all aboard when landing. The big long struts were perfect for making smooooth landings. I have been on plenty of L10 flts where they only way you knew you were on the ground was watching the spoilers deploy.

Well, said. After flying on 62 L10's or (those loud smokers) I haven't found a plane that looked better or that was more comfortable. It always had a lot of head room and legroom. It also always felt like you were flying. It was loud, smoked, and vibrated. That is how flying should be. Too bad they had to go. I would do multi leg trips just to fly on the L10.

It kinda sucks when you look back 10yrs ago, what awesome planes we had flying. L10s,727s, DC-9s (still flying), MD11s, DC10s, 747s, F28s, F100s, Did I leave anything out?

Everything now looks the same. Two engines. 3-3 seating. Boring.

Ah, for the good old days.

I couldn't agree more.

And it is interesting to note that the TriStar opened both transatlantic and transpacific service for Delta Air Lines, the airline that flew more L10s than any other airline and which is now full tilt in a full tilt all-Boeing international expansion.
