Recommendation: CMH-NRT (AA,NW,UA Or JL)?

Sun Jul 16, 2006 11:55 am

I am wanting to book a trip from CMH-NRT. Which airline do you recommend from the above list. Please take in consideration IFE, seat pitch, service, etc. The price difference is not to much, so I want to get an opinion before I buy.

Thanks,

Convenience seems to point to NW. Chances are, you can get a DC-9 flight from CMH to DTW, which is better than a RJ any day. That flight should be less than 30-40 minutes.

NW has connections to NRT from DTW. Not ever flying them internationally, I'm not sure how their service is, but I would imagine they run 744's.

You can probably do the same thing but go through MSP on an A320, but that's about 1.5 hour flight. Quick check shows you can get it as low as $1500.

Prices are running between $1300-$1500, but I want to see what carrier will be the best considering service, IFE, seat pitch, etc. On AA, UA, and JL all go thru ORD which is an hour flight from CMH and NW thru DTW (1/2 hour flight) or MSP (1 1/2 hour flight). They all seem convinent. I just want to the the best out of the money I will be paying!!!

On NW there are no PTVs in coach on 747s. If you want to fly on NW and have a PTV you need to get on a A332 off the West Coast, e.g. PDX or SEA or SFO.

On A332s there is 33'' seatch pitch in the front part of coach and 31'' seat pitch in the back part of coach.

Fo the rest of the info see the www.seatguru.com

I do not know when you want to but for mid Sep trip I'm getting prices f about $1,000.

I would opt for the west coast flight. Nice plane. And you are not on it as long. Breaks up the trip a little.

I assume you'll be flying economy. If that's the case, I can tell you about United as I just flew United from KIX to ORD last week.

The last couple of times I travelled to Japan from the U.S., I flew business class, so I was kind of dreading economy class. I was pleasantly surprised, however.

The seats were pretty comfortable, and I believe they had recently been recovered in some kind of dark teal fabric. I was on a 777, so there were PTVs at every seat. This was a nice feature, but I wasn't really interested in any of the movies that were showing. There was a nice blanket and a pillow at each seat.

The food was better than I had expected. We were offered 2 meals and a snack. The first meal was a choice of chicken katsu on rice and curry or beef and potatoes. I chose the former, and it was actually really good. It came with a kind of boring salad (really just lettuce), a small cup of thousand island dressing, edamame, a piece of salami or something, caramel cake, a roll, and a cup of water. The midflight snack was a small bowl of instant ramen (which I brought home and ate later), an almond cookie, and another cup of water. The ramen was actually high quality instant ramen (which might sound like an oxymoron, but there is such a thing). It was made by Toyo Suisan (I believe) and it had pieces of fried tofu and green onions in it. The final meal came about 1 hour before landing. We had a choice of an omelet or pasta. The pasta looked like it had some cheese and regular tomato sauce on it. The omelet was very thick and it resembled unsweet Japanese tamagoyaki. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't exactly great either. It came with 3 pieces of potato and a micro-sausage which was tiny but tasty.

I hope that was helpful.. Let me know if you have any other questions.

If you are looking for IFE...NW has windows and a middle screen. After that its BYOIFE.

UA from ORD to NRT is a 744 which is also BYOIFE. ORD-KIX is a 777 with PTV.

JL has PTV where you can watch quality movies and crazy JAL produced programming. JAL TV They also has "external" views. You can see right, left, forward and down view. The plane is a 744. FA are always kind and cute...can't beat that.

AA is a 777 with PTV.
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

Take the hit on the short part of the trip and hop on an RJ to ORD. You'll be cramped for an hour, then happy for 12. Then, either take AA to NRT if you value IFE, or new oneworld partner JL if you value great service.

CMH to DTW - If you are in Y, does it really matter? No.

Charlipr - Why no CO or DL? Curiously.... CO would be a good ride, DL would be nice also. Both on 777.

If you're simply looking for a recommendation of the 4 you've listed. I'd recommend AA or UA. If it was me flying it, I'd fly NW among the four so I could earn my beloved SkyMiles.

I have flown with NW twice before on this route and I was pretty pleased with the coach service. Friendly and the food was good, IFE could probably have been better, but I'm sure you will try to sleep anyway. good luck!

Out of the list you provided, I would say Continental through IAH. LOL

I meant to include those, I really do not want to back-track going thru IAH, EWR, or ATL. I am currently building up my Dividend Miles so I think I will go with UA since I can earn them there. My co-worker said that JL was the way to go, but I would not earn Dividend Miles on them (I realized this after I posted the thread)!!! Did I read correctly that the UA 744's do not have PTV's? Do they have in seat power for the laptop?
