Flying To Hawaii, Who Do I Fly With?

Mon Jul 17, 2006 10:40 am

This winter I will be flying to Maui (OGG) from Bend Or. (RDM) and I would like to know who you recommend to fly on. I and my parents will be flying coach (or business if it is cheap enough) and we would like good IFE, a decent meal service and comfortable seats.
Although it does not really matter we are all a part of the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, so it might be best if we stayed to AS partner airlines. It would help if there weren’t a lot of terminal changes and I am not familiar with LAX, SFO or HNL at all. Also I would like to fly on something bigger than a 757, I have flown 757’s and 737’s quite a lot and something different would be nice. Also I wouldn’t mind stopping in HNL for a while. (Love that airport) if it is not too horribly expensive.

Six years ago I flew HA from ANC to HNL and it was very enjoyable, all my other trips there were before I can remember, back in the days where 747’s DC-10’s and L-1011’s were a common sight at HNL

*also QX’s new RDM-LAX service will be running by then so flying to LAX is an option.

So if you would tell me your experiences or suggestions on flying to Hawaii. Anything and everything helps.

Thank you in advance,

Alaska737 airplane

CO is the only airline with no BOB to Hawaii from the mainland now.

Thus, you could easily connect to NW's PDX or even SEA-HNL flights. There are movies on LCD screens above every three rows or so of seats. I found, along with a friend of mine the NW 753 seats really comfortable.

Delta flies nice 767-400ERs from SLC-OGG. If you do not want to connect in SLC, fly Delta to HNL from SFO or LAX on a 767-400ER, and then take HA on a 717 to OGG.

Since HA is a mileage partner with AS, and you enjoyed them before why not fly them again. #1) 763 out of PDX; #2) non-stop from PDX to OGG. Seems they meet your basic requirements.

Go on Hawaiian.

Or: Use the internet thing here and go to orbitz/travelocity/ _the airline sites themselves _ and do some basic grunt work, looking up schedules, prices, etc. Its not that difficult.

Considering all your criteria, conditions, I'm surprised you don't specify WHAT particular movie you want to watch - I'd hate to be your travel agent.

If you can make it to LAX, you'll have access to a myriad of options to OGG. UA and AA (I believe) offer nonstops. UA has the biggest presence of the legacy carriers but is otherwise unremarkable. Expect to fly a 767 or 757 as they have become the prime route runners. Notable exceptions include UA's SFO-HNL 777, NW's LAX-HNL 753, DL's LAX-HNL 764 and AQ's 737NG service from all US Mainland destinations. I'm sure I'll be corrected on a few and that there are others for which I'll get flamed...

Eithwe way, good luck and enjoy Maui, hands down my favorite of the Islands!

Not true...Hawaiian does not charge for meals. Think about renting a digeplayer. They have around 12 movies and different tv shows. $15 and they come with 2 headsets. Request seats in the back as they have been selling out and we rent them starting from the back.

looks like it will either be NWA or HA. HA is cheaper but that does not include going from RDM to PDX. i was wondering if either airline has power ports so i could plug in my laptop on the flights? and where would be good places to sit?

Since I go to Hawaii from Anchorage once a year - at least - let me attempt to influence you into taking the Hawaiian Vacations charter on Hawaiian Airlines.

Nope, you won't get any mileage accrual for it.

Nope, it's not every day.

That said: It is the best way to go from ANC-HNL and return. Best fares; best service; clean, fairly new (or refurbed) 767s; a meal on board (not BOB); and as soon as you step aboard you'll think you're already on the Oahu. Oh, and a note about the HA 767s . . . these aren't your typical charter 767s - where the seat pitch is 30inches and they stuff ten across in the rows in Y - these are HAs "regular every day" airframes. Kudos to HA for exceptional trips every times I've flown . . .

You could of course, hop down to SEA or LAX or SFO or PHX and go with any number of carriers . . . UA, US, AA, HA, NW, etc . . . but why waste the vacation time on multiple stops, and waste the $$$ on the higher fare.

Go to www.hawaiianvacations.com and book the trip. It's really the only way to go.

Well thats great, but he's from Oregon, and if he flew HA he would have to buy a seperate air fare just to get to a HA flight, then on top of that an HA fare. With AS vacations, he would get a good fare and connecting flights, of course the HA flights with AS vacations are NW flights but still, its a lot easier.

Well, I read his profile, obviously missed that part in his thread opener:

Reading his profile:

Location: Abchorage AK/Kodiak AK/Sisters OR

He's got a 66.6666666666666. . . . . % chance of flying from ANC or ADQ.

Ihe flies from Oregon I'd still take HA from SEA . . . a NW cattlecar with isn't my idea of a way to start a Hawaiian Vacation . . . sorry my friend.

The AA flight out of ORD is still operating. A nice long haul to relax on. I recommend this flight before they suspend service!

My uncle captained it home to ORD today. AA #217/218.

He always wishes the departing vacationers a fond farewell from their holiday!

Let us know what you decide!  bouncy

Cattle car, anyone that has flown the 753 knows its a comfortable plane, as for how you came up with cattle car is beyond me, since NW's 753 have more room then CO's  Wink

HA's 767 Seat Pitch and Width
First Class: 42" Pitch and 21.0 Wide
Coach: 32" Pitch and 18.0 Wide

NW's 753
First Class: 37.0 Pitch and 21.0 Wide
Coach Class 30-32" Pitch and 17.2" wide.

Not bad especially when comparing a widebody to a narrowbody.

Right now it is looking like HA, but it really depends if we want to fly or drive to Portland. if we are going to drive then HA but if we are going to fly then NW. we might just by a round trip RDM-PDX. HA is about 200 bucks cheaper.

BTW i have flown Hawaiian Vacations before and i loved it. back when HA operated the DC-10's it was a great expirence and two great flights.

For me, the biggest problem with the NW 753's, in Y, is waiting for the other pax to deplane. Wasn't a problem when they bumped me to F on SFO-HNL.  bigthumbsup

BOB doesn't really bother me. HA's CEO has said the trans-pac meals don't make economic sense, but they will keep them as they are a choice driver once the airline has met the "market clearing" price on a route.

You mention "Winter" so I am assuming you'll be traveling to Maui after 13th, October.
Hawaiian Airlines will be flying to Maui (OGG) from Portland (PDX) daily beginning Oct 13th and is presently accepting reservations for this flight #39 which departs at 9:50am and arrives in Maui at 12:20pm. Return flight is #40 which departs OGG 12:50pm and arrives in PDX at 9:05pm.

Book early and check their website for special online fares. Since you may be planning on using Alaska Mileage to redeem travel, Hawaiian is a code share airlines with Alaska. If you like Alaska then you'll LOVE flying Hawaiian. HA also serves in-flight meals in coach class on all their West Coast flights....Now if you can upgrade to First Class, I suggest you do so. Hawaiian has the Best heading for the islands.

Hope this helps a little.....Have a nice flight to Hawaii.

Aloha!

You could do Delta and you could fly a 764 and then hop over to OGG. Or there is Continental 764

It sounds like DL is really the best choice for you based on your criteria:

- AS partner (with EQM's to boot)
- Widebody (764)
- Quick hop over to SLC, then non-stop
- I believe DL still has meals in Y on Hawaii flights; if not, you at least get the free snack pack which both UA/AA will charge you for
- SLC is an easy airport for connections, more so than LAX, SFO, or SEA (connecting QX to NW at SEA is a pain, as is connecting AA to AS at LAX)

Quoting Burnsie28 (Reply 1):

Not ture. Neither DL or HA have BOB to Hawaii.
