Have You Been On A Flight With Someone Famous?

Wed Jul 26, 2006 7:53 am

Once I had the priviledge of flying on the same flight as Duran Duran from LHR to JFK. Back in the good old Pan Am days in the 80's.

Anyone else? Don't leave anybody out. Politicians are welcome and considered famous too!

Hello Scalebuilder!

Last year I flew with Moby!! He was sitting in business class and I saw him in the waiting room and when I was walking to my seat. The route was CCS-BOG on Avianca's MD-83.

I sat behind Al Sharpton once on a flight to Chicago and it was all I could do to keep my self from sticking a pencil in his hair to see if it would stay. He had some huge hired guns with him.
Just give me my Vario, my Ozone Mojo and a gorgeous day of soaring.

About 4 years ago from JFK-LAS in first on America West, I sat across from Magic Johnson! He was very friendly and signed autographs for anyone who asked.

About 10 years ago, "Baba Booey" - Gary Dell'Abate from the Howard Stern show was on my TWA flight from LGA to FLL or PBI (not sure which one).

I would really enjoy seeing that barf bag of yours. That is just sooo cool!  Wink

When I flew with Duran Duran, they were solidly seated in FC, and little insignificant me was solidly seated in Y without a chance to even get an autograph.

But it was a neat experience in any regard.

Out of the individuals you had contact with, who did you enjoy the most? Who did you really dislike? I have heard a lot of tales when it comes to famous people and their flying experience.

same flight as Duran Duran

on the last day of school my friend and myself put on suits and then temperaraly dyed our hair red and put it in three mohawks. I normally don't do anything to crazy, but this was the last day at this school so we had to do some thing fun. but anyways my teachers all agreed that we looked like duran duran, they played us some of their music and told us that we needed to sing along... well we didn't know the words but we had fun trying hehehehe, good times.

back on track, on QF LAX-AKL I was sitting up stairs in business, and down below in business class their was the lead singer of the pussycat dolls (I don't really listen to to much of their music... but she's hot  Wink) also there was this one supermodel, that was modeling back in my dads time. so I went down stairs so that I could "check out the onboard bar." but really I was just pecking to see if it was true... and it was there were really 2 celebrities on board!

I was on an AA flight (MD80) in 1997 from DCA to ORD... it was just after the Gay & Lesbian March on Washington, so the plane was about 80% filled with gay people. Also on the flight was the infamous Reverend Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition, a virulently anti-gay, anti-abortion, and these days, anti-stem cell research organization. Sheldon had been in Washington to ply the airwaves as a "counterpoint" voice to the massive gay rights demonstration that was going on.

Needless to say, when the gay passengers noticed that Sheldon was on board, many took the opportunity to confront him. For the first half of the flight, there was a steady stream of people coming up to him in his aisle seat. From what I could hear, most people described how hurtful his rhetoric was to them personally, or told him their stories about growing up gay, etc. Surprisingly, there was no yelling, and certainly no physical intimidation. Throughout the experience, Sheldon did his best not to make eye contact with anyone. He finally summoned a flight attendant, and after much discussion, he and his wife were moved to first class... and the curtain was closed. The plane erupted in chanting (can't remember what was being said, but it was funny), which continued for some time. When we arrived at ORD, he and his wife were immediately whisked off the airplane by security agents.

Apparently, the same exact thing happened on his connecting flight from ORD to SNA, and it made national news. It was certainly the most entertaining flight I've been on! If you believe in the concept of karma, then you might say that Reverend Sheldon was simply reaping what he'd sowed.

I think it was back around 1984 I had JR Ewing (Larry Hangman) on a AA762 flight LAX-DFW.

About 5 yrs ago I had Terrel Davis from the Denver Broncos on a DL 763 from SAN-ATL.
Also Kellon Winslow from the Chargers on a DL 763 SAN-ATL and the guy who played Bud from Jag on a DL M88 MKE-to CVG.

Of course all flew 1st.

Flown on the same plane as Dennis Rodman twice, both red-eyes on AA from LAS-DFW. The funny thing is on one of the flights we were sitting in First, Dennis was in Coach, both flights. This was back when he played for the San Antonio Spurs.

My father (retired CO captain) has had the following individuals on the plane:

Lyle Lovett
William Shatner
Julia Child (2 times!)
Ed McMahon
Don Rickles
Ex-president Gerald Ford (along with his secret service escort)

On a CO MD80 (IAH-DEN), during "World Youth Day" in Denver, over 10 years ago, ABC newsanchor Sam Donaldson was on the plane enroute to DEN to cover the event.

Most famous person I've sat next to are Ron & Don on a Sunday morning BOS-YYZ flight after a Leafs-Bruins HNIC matchup.

I was also behind Don in line at the McDonald's concession in the departure area. He likes hash browns. He was dressed to the nines even for he flight (I guess to uphold his persona.)

A couple of years ago I sat right in front of Aaron Neville and his wife/girlfriend on a flight from LAX-MSY. He was very nice and talked biz with a banker/producer type the whole flight. After we landed at Nawlins' he signed autographs for everyone interested. He was dressed like a wrestler with lots of jewelry, tight clothing, and some sort of head rag. I hope this counts.

Back in late 2000, Newt Gingrich was on my flight from Atlanta to Miami. He was in first class, and I was only a few rows behind the partition. He took the time to speak to some people during the flight, which was interesting to watch.

Thats about it for me, but my dad saw Muhammad Ali at CVG a few years back signing autographs in between flights.

Muhammad Ali routinely flies through CVG on his way to/from GRR on Comair. Delta treats him very well, driving him from airplane to airplane as he makes his connection. He usually gets to be the first one on the airplane.

I don't really fly a lot but the one time I sat first class (AA JFK-LAX), it was next to Winona Ryder about 3 days before she went on a spree at Saks in Beverly Hills. She's was one weird lady. Ben Stein had been on the flight out from LAX-JFK.

Also I flew OAK-BUR with Green Day on SW back in like 1997. Nnick Lachey was on my United LAX-MCO, but is he even really famous anymore?

I have nowhere near as impressive a llist as FlyguyClt or AA777223ER! But when I was a F/A for a regional names Business Express back in the 80s, (OMFG it cant have been THAT long ago!), I can claim three on my flights:

-Art Carney (BDR-BOS -very quiet but very polite)
-Bret Somers (BDR-BOS - a sweetheart!!- and 2 Bloody Marys on a 45 min flight - ATTAGIRL!!)
-Martha Stewart (BOS-BDR .. b*tch-trog then, can only imagine her now)
-Jacques Pepin (HVN-LGA .. nice guy, but enough with that silly accent!)

As a passenger, I sat near Greta Van Susteren on an early AM LGA-DCA US shuttle flight. Frightnin sight !!

Wish I had more, but that's my small list!

I flew with the "good" Rev. Sharpton on the 15th of this month between MSP and SEA. On Sunday the 16th there was an article in the Tacoma News Tribune about the Rev's visit. There was a rally held for Sharpton and a staggering 40 people showed up. It was stated to be "very presidential" because they were the same 40 people who voted for him in the 2004 Democratic primary. Probably my favorite part of the entire trip was the fact the lady sitting next to him didn't have a clue in hell who he was. I had to laugh a little in side, he probably died a little. Such is life.

Last July I flew SAC-ATL on Delta. I was sitting next to Henry Kissinger (spelling?) the former Secretrary of State. We had a very pleasent conversation dealing with economic issues.

While this is not actually on a flight, in Terminal C at Newark while waiting to catch my plane back home, I saw those two Foxnews commentators Mr. Hennity and Mr. Colmes sitting at a table sharing a pizza at the food court; they appeared to be best of friends.

In 2002 at FRA, former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and his staff nearly ran me over. I am still amazed how big he is - looks like a retired NFL center!! He must be at least 6' 6" and 350 pounds.

In March of 2004, I saw Hans Blix, the chief weapons inspector for the UN, at ORD. I knew he had been in Chicago on a book tour.

Later that day, while standing in the AA baggage claim at LGA, I said to my wife, "Hans Blix was on our flight."

My wife said, "How do you know?"

"Because he's standing behind you."

The interesting thing is, assuming that he flew first class, that he must have been one of the last people to board, because we were in the last group to board the coach section.

Personally, I haven't, but about a year ago as my mother was going from DEN to NY (with a delay in Dallas due to problems at LGA, flight switched to JFK). Unknown to her while on board, Bill Mauer (someone check that) was on her flight. Once she landed in JFK, she realized he was on the flight and was able to get him to sign a piece a paper. Pretty funny actually since my family is pretty conservative.

Also, on the same trip, this time returning back with a stop in MIA, she was able to meet one of the Waynes brothers in the terminal.

Yes, AKL-LAX on NZ with The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester up front.

Wow! What up front flying or upfront in First Class !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was on an FR flight to Stansted with Eddie Jordan (former owner of F1 team)

another FR flight I sat beside some actor off Emerdale (UK soap) young obese gentleman - Dont know his name.

A guy I worked with once sat beside Ronaldinho, on a flight to DUB (when Brazil played Ireland in a soccer friendly) The work colleague is not a fan of football and didnt realise who it was until he saw his picture in the paper lol.

Well not on a flight with anyone famous, but the next best thing. I got to unload B.B. Kings Instruments and guitar back when I still worked at ORD 6 years ago, and just today i got to load all the D.C. Uniteds soccer equipment and uniforms. I know its not much but its about as close as you get working the ramp.

Last summer I flew with the Pop/Punk band Simple Plan on B6 from JFK-SLC. Also, about 8 years ago I flew on the same flight as Alan Houston of the New York Knicks, on DL LGA-CVG.

Andrew Neil - In the BA Concorde Room yesterday going to JFK as I was waiting for my flight to IAD.

Anne Robinson of Weakest Link fame - On the same flight LHR-LAX in BA First. Was moved at gate from my seat 2A to accomodate her  Sad Ended up sitting next to my brother!

Reese Witherspoon - BA Concorde flight in September 2002. had the very briefest of chats at the doors where boarding was taking place.

Joan Collins - Across the aisle from my brother and I in BA Club World (LHR-JFK), was surprised she wasn't on Concorde

I'm based @ IAH so I have seen a lot of celebs.

-GW Bush
-Paul Wall
-Slim Thug
-all the houston rappers.
-A few actors

I have never been a flight with a celeb that I know of.

I have been flight crew on a flight with:
-Paul Wall and the CEO of his record company. They got on early and introduced themselves. Nice guys if you ask me. BTW. His grill was cool  Smile
