Best Business Class Over The Pacific

Sat Jul 29, 2006 2:48 pm

Ok, I'm flying from SMF to MNL in a few weeks. I'm looking for the best business class service accross the Pacific. I'm not sure I wanna take the direct Phillipines Arlines flight SFO-MNL and was looking for some advise on wat the best biz class is. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking more of SMF-LAX on UA then LAX-HKG-MNL on CX. What do you guys think??

I don't know what how your paying (if with miles or something) but SQ flys over there and i have heard that their business class is better then CX, also CX seat doesn't go all the way flat... close, but not quite.
Also you can go through SYD or Brisbane with Qantas.
Qantas skybed goes all the way flat!
I sat next to some on on Qantas a few weeks ago and he said that he flys around the world for his business and Qantas sports the best business class seat out of all the airlines he has flown on.

so if you don't mind flying to the down under then I'd go with Qantas, if you don't then SQ. this said CX isn't a terrible airline, they are quite good.

also ANA's new business class looks really classy! I don't believe they fly to manila, but they could get you over in that direction!

It's on my employer's tab so the price is not a big issue. I think I like SQ's the best and QF's full recliners aren't bad at all. Thanx for the info and the pics.

The business class seats flying across the Pacific are on Air New Zealand. The Virgin style suites are amazing, but of course that is not practical for your trip.

I recommend Singapore. I liked their Spacebed. It is really well designed and easy to sleep in. I enjoyed it on the 18 hour journey between EWR and SIN. I've heard good thing about ANA and they really have been hyping their new business class. JAL is also competitive. I haven't flown CX, but they are supposed to be good.

Not all Asian airlines are the same though. A certain few give the region a good reputation, but there are some pretty bad business classes out there.

Phillipine Airlines isn't good from what I hear. They are outdated just like China Airlines and Eva. Eva has 46'' pitch, China has 50'', Phillipine has 45''.

In comparison SQ has 58'', ANA has 65'', JAL has 62'' and Cathay has 60''.

For US airlines, NW has 60''. It is the average of all the airlines. Decent service, food and seats.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Thanx for the info. My co-workers are flying Phillipines since it's a direct flight but I heard their biz class is waay outdated. I figured since it's gonna be a long flight either way, I'll shop around. I think I'll definitely try SQ's this time around and since I'll be doing the trip once a month till the end of the year, I'll try JAL and ANA later.

Is UA's business class any good? Chanel 9 on an international would be nice.

If you want lie-flat seats then no.
they still have the old fashion cradle seats, plus i wasn't to impressed when I flew with them, maybe it was just bad luck, but the flight attendants, calling centre and ticketing agents were REALLY rude to me. now I'm not going to say that everyone at United are pricks, that wouldn't be true, but personally I would rather fly on a asian carrier.

(ANA, SQ, JAL, CX) thats four airlines, if your going once a month tell the end of the year, then you can try every airline once and then at the end fly the one you liked the most a few more times  Smile

Good idea. I might just do that.... I'm definately looking forward to an Asian airline.

Since when? It's just another lie-flat at an angle.

OZ 747/767 C is as patetic as PR, the refurbished 777s should be nicer. PR C is definitely not the way to go, especially if you happen to get N754PR - it has an even more cramped upper deck than the rest. PR F is somewhat equal to SQ C comfort wise... and might be cheaper too.

Looks like SQ will be out of the question since my godamn co-workers flew PR and paid so little that my boss is barking over the $6800 quote I gave him on SQ. I might have to do OZ or Korean at this rate but PR is out of the question for me.

It reminded me a bit of the old NW classic WBC. The new NW world business class gets high ratings. You could do SMF-DTW-NRT-MNL.

i was just trying to say that they recline to 180 degrees, I didn't say that they weren't angled (at least I didn't mean to Wink) I was also just saying that because CX doesn't go quite flat... like I said its close to it, but not quite.

asaina has a new business class seat, its angled and doesn't go completly 180, it goes to 167 degrees.

I don't know what airline has better service or what have you, but I'd look into the trip report section.

I'll be flying a 772ER SFO-ICN-MNL on both legs. The link above claim 777's to SFO are equipped with the new business class thus my excitement. I was even more stoked when I found out they are a Star Alliance member.
