Airline Employees: How Many Cities Lived In?

Sun Jul 30, 2006 3:42 pm

Something that I have always wondered about and I don't know if this subject has been a thread before: How many cities have all you airline folks out there lived in due to layoffs, then a necessary transfer to another hub/city to keep the job, a self chosen transfer to another city, etc, etc??

For me:

Denver, Houston, Phoenix (in that order)

Amazingly enough (and I'm certainly in the minority), only one: Seattle. I have been based in Pittsburgh PA, Seattle WA, Fairbanks AK, Phoenix AZ, Las Vegas NV, and Honolulu HI. In general, if I haven't been based at home, I have commuted for my trips. For my job in Fairbanks, to be fair, it is a stretch to say I commuted. I lived there for two or more months at a time before coming back to Seattle (where my wife and son still lived) for a short visit, then going back to Alaska for several more weeks.

It has been a conscious decision to stay in Seattle. My family, and all of my wife's family is there. Commuting has taken away several days a month of my time, but having a stable home life is worth it for me. Also, since I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, the area has always been home for me. I have had the opportunity to explore a huge variety of other cities and parts of the world, but for me there is no better place to live than our little corner of the planet. I will freely admit though, that the best four years of my career were those when I was based at home in Seattle, flying for Hawaiian. Those were a little slice of heaven on earth for me. Now that I am back from furlough, hopefully I will be able to bid back to SEA in the near future.

I have no doubt that others prefer to move to their base, as for them the amount of time at home is more important than its location. That is what makes life (and this job) interesting - variety.

Thanks for the post HAL. I agree wholeheartedly with you on having a stable home life as much as possible. While I am a Commercial/Instr. pilot, I chose not to pursue an airline career for this reason. I guess every person has his idea or way of how to make a stable home life all work out...some can handle it, make it work AND be away alot, others can not. I would fall into the later I guess. Rather, I chose to be an airline technician, come home every night to family and then fly for fun(I own a T210) and/or use it for a business or non-profit organization(which I do).

Hey I love the Seattle area!!...visited many times spending time with friends (in Redmond and Kirkland), while I was living in Denver, which is where I hope to get back to eventually.

You'll have to move to Rio de Janeiro to complete the "glamorous city" package!

Since working for LH I've been to Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and finally to Paris. Let's see what's coming next. Before starting my apprenticeship my family moved from Munich to Karlsruhe and than on to Rostock.

Newark, Tucson, Seattle, and for the last 6 plus years, Houston.

If I could do it, I'd commute from Seattle as my wife's from that area and I much prefer it to Houston, but it's hard to do as a dispatcher when you only have 2-3 days off between your work week.

Well it all started in TLH. Since then I've lived in the following cities...

TLH-LCQ-ROC-GRR-JFK-GRR-GUM-TLH-LCQ-STL-MSP-SFO-LAX-IAH-MSP-FNT-MSP-DFW-MSP-MKE-IAH-MSP-MKE-MSP-IAH-MSP-PSM-BOS-IAD-JFK-BOS-MSP-BWI and finally MCO.

Granted from the first MSP entry up to the BWI entry, I was working for a charter airline as a flight mechanic/maintenance rep. They would send me to various places for a few months at a time. Luckily they paid for my hotels and gave me a rental car as well as Per Diem. So it was a pretty good gig.

I was pretty much homeless at the time. I put all my things in storage and ask my supervisor to base me in TLH for tax purposes and stayed on the road for nearly 4 years.

You gotta be CO. Didn't you just love Denver. Stapelton was the shit.

Well, I've only been doing this for 2 years. So, PHX to grow up. Grand forks, ND for college, and back to PHX for now, I hope to stay since the PHX-IAH commute isnt bad.

My dad is a horror story, I dont kno if this is the right order

Denver, Gunnison old Frontier days, Denver, Auburn, Puerto Rico, Somoa, Tonga, Nashville, Buffalo, somewhere in Virginia, Denver, Phoenix.. that had to be bad.
