What The Are The Strongest Jetliner Ever Built?

Wed Aug 02, 2006 1:23 am

I can not pick any jetliner built after 1982. I have to say the Lockheed L-1011 tristar, Boeing 707, DC-8 and VC-10. I am a big 747 fan but I will tell anybody that a L-1011 has a stronger airframe than a 747, in a heart beat. I pick 707 because they have landed safely from mid air collision and getting half there wing burned off. I pick DC-8 because they are still in service today.

I agree with the 707. Especially after Tex Johnson did a barrel roll in one.

I'm not sure the newer A340's technology but I after seeing a program on the T.V about the 777, I'm convinced the 777 is the best plane out there. They put the airframe to tremendous punishment during testing, they even bent the wings upward until the breaking point and it was a very impressive angle, around 35+ degrees. Engines are very reliable and the aircraft can takeoff, fly and land normally with only one engine without the limitations of other aircraft, I don't think I've ever heard of a plane do a standing takeoff with only one engine.

That kind of testing goes on with all kinds of airliners so its not just the 777. The wins accually break or they give way around 26.5 degrees up.

I personally think the DC10 is one of the must rugged planes. They have been swallowed up by cargo opertors and many of the first assembled planes are still flying cargo today 35 years later.

As for what is strongest, that is a very subjective term. Strongest isn't really a metric that is easily defined.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Wouldn't be one of the newer A/C's like the B773ER or the A345/6. I have read several articles and constantly they say that B773ER is much stronger than the B773.

If you were to read the accounts of FedEx flt 705 I think you would agree maybe the DC-10 was pretty damn rugged...they put that thing through quite a ride the f/o put that thing damn near inverted to keep the hijacker (Auburn Calloway) off balance. When it got back to MEM it had bloody footprints on the ceiling of the door entrance.

If you put "strong" = "rugged" then I instantly think of the Tu-154.
This one was designed to operate also from "less than well paved" runways ...

Well in a nut shell basically a FedEx employee named Auburn Calloway a DC-10 FE who had previously worked for Flying Tigers and when they merged with Fedx he got picked up...Well he had a checkerd past and was to have a hearing as to whether he padded his flight hours even though he was a former NAVY pilot and I believe Stanford Grad... anyway he had worked an inbound flt as an FE and was to turn around and work the MEM San Jose run...well his flt came in one minute over so the crew ran out of time ...the crew would have been him as the FE a small female Captain and a male F/O.. He had his plan to take over the A/C. He felt he was getting a raw deal as an african american and was about to get fired so he had left a suicide note even though he wanted insurance money to provide for is family he would go ahead with his paln to take over the plane..But now the crew consisted of an all male crew and an F/O who was quite a big guy but he was not to be deterred he rode as a jumpseater and had to fight a 3 man crew. He had hammers and a spear gun ...he figured that if they were to crash his inflicted injuries to the crew would be consistant with an airplane crash. So he went into the cockpit and started hitting the pilots in the head with a hammer. The capt and the FE were fighting with him while the F/O even with a fractured skull rolled the A/C almost inverted just short of it because of visibility and was moving the A/C wildly to keep the hijacker off balance...Well to sum it up the Capt took over and the F/O took over the fight in the cabin and he landed the DC-10 overweight and high and hot and was amazing he put it on the ground....The crew did a fantastic job....unfortunately the crew suffered such devestating injuries none of them were able to fly again and Auburn Calloway got life in prison without parole......

The MD-80 is pretty strong as well...some of those aircraft are starting to get up there in age (and some are showing it) however if they were more efficient, I think they could still be flying years from now.

Some of the Northwest DC-9s are pretty old as well and they are still chugging along.

I believe the DC-3 is so indestructible because there was little experience with metal aircraft, so it was designed overstrenght.
I would not be surprised if early jetliners were likewise overstrength (overweight). If that's true, it's only natural if the latest designs are not as rugged.

That's true, I believe it was the first 747s were more rugged than today's models, due to the fact that 1960's technology had never before built such a huge airplane to go long distances.
