China Eastern Anyone?

Fri Aug 04, 2006 9:58 pm

Hi

Am travelling with friends to PVG on the 12th Aug with China Eastern out of CDG (friends live in Paris).

Has anyone had any experience travelling long haul with them, and any insight on their J class product on the 346 ?

Returning on AF metal (17th Aug, old config. 772 I think), so it will be interesting to compare the two.

Thanks

Shamu

I flew China Eastern on January 1st, 2002. My flight was 3 hours after New Years, and the atmosphere was great. I flew AA SFO-LAX, and connected to China Eastern's LAX-Beijing-PVG. The a/c was a MD-11.
Let me tell you that it was by far the best flight I have ever taken in my entire life. The cabin crew was extremely attentive and welcoming. Always made sure that the pax were taken care of. The IFE was average, they had some movie playing, but I wasn't really interested. I was more excited to be going to China, then watching the movie. The flight was smooth, and very comfortable.
There really isn't much more to it. It was just a perfect flight for me. And I hope that your flight will go just as well.

hey

In 2002 took LAX-PVG on an MD11, PEK-PVG on an A320, and PVG-LAX on an MD11. I wasn't too pleased in Y with 2-5-2 seating, but I'm sure J will be much more comfy. I remember it being an ordinary flight, nothing too great. They gave out amenity kits and cards though so that was pretty cool. Crew was nice from what I remember and the food wasn't all that bad. Long flight from LAX though.

Guys

Thanks for the feedback. Your experiences are much more positive than some of the online trip reports I have been reading !!

Thanks again.

Shamu.

ps Anyone in the know.....As I'm on AF paperwork and ticketing (AF114/MU554), do I get DL Skymiles?

I have only once taken MU on a flight from PVG to CDG, in first class, but I know the company quite well on its domestic China schedule (including Hong Kong). So I hope that my comments may help you.

I see that the major Chinese international carriers (CZ, CA, MU) are making big efforts to upgrade their service, but they are still a very long way from the standard of the "classic" Asian carriers. So you will not have anything nearly as good as CX, SQ or TG.

For your flight to PVG, I think you will find that the F/As are very attentive, but that overall comfort and also the choice of food and wine (if that is important to you) are less good than AF. It may well be that the J cabin is very quiet - more so than with AF, although in August things may be a bit different. The reason I say this is that typically the P and J cabins between CDG and China are significantly more busy on AF than on the Chinese carriers. By contrast, the AF Y cabin has a huge number of Chinese passengers and vice versa for the Chinese carriers, who carry lots of French tour groups. In other words, those who prefer P and J also prefer AF (I have quite frequently had Chinese political figures in the P cabin with me on AF, especially governors of various provinces; this would have politically incorrect at one time, but now there seems to be no problem).

Some words of warning:

-the quality of the English of the F/As can be variable, so speak slowly (sorry to maybe seem a bit arrogant, but it is a small point that can make a difference)

- be sure that you are given all the paperwork to complete before arriving in Shanghai. There are normally 3 documents: health declaration, immigration form and finally customs declaration. Sometimes the crews forget, in my experience, and it is not fun to have to do all this inside the airport.

- overall quality on Chinese carriers is much more variable than with other Asian or European companies, since the implementation of a perfectly standard service is still not there yet. So you could have a very good or a very bad surprise ! For example, I once had 2 crew members of an MU flight from Shanghai to Hong Kong sleeping, and snoring (!), in the F cabin, just beside me.

Overall, I think it will be a good experience and I hope that you enjoy the flight. If it is your first time to China,I hope that you enjoy it, it is an amazing country.

For your return with AF, it is indeed a 772, but I don't know if it is one of the refitted planes (I suggest you do a search on the civil aviation forum to find out more). Anyway, I would advise you to already select your seat in the front part of the J cabin. The J cabin on the 777s is split in 2 parts with the kitchen and toilets between, but there are fewer rows in the front part, which makes the ambiance much more comfortable. If it is a 772, these rows are 4 -- 6, on the "old" versions.

Concerning your miles, I am sorry I cannot answer this question.

All this is of course just my own personal ideas, but I hope it helps. If you have any specific questions still, I will of course try to help.
