Do You Listen To UA's Channel 9 From The Flight...

Fri Aug 11, 2006 3:48 am

Do you listen to (when traveling on United Airlines) Channel 9 From the Flight Deck?

You don't need to listen to channel 9 in the flight deck. You ARE channel 9.  Wink

Hi,

Every chance I get, too.
The first time was for me in May, between ORD and ANC.

I really look forward to enjoy it one more time!

I do listen to it when I fly UA. Back in August 2001, a captain made an announcement telling us to listen to channel 9. He said he would tell us a little bit about aviation history. So he started out by talking about his passion for aviation and how airplanes work... he even deployed the speed brakes (is that what they are called?) over the wings, just to show us one of the ways to slow down the plane. It was great for him to do that... Everytime I fly United I hope that this captain is at the controls... maybe it was a very rare occasion.

I remember flying a trip to Panama. I had the hardest time maintaining radio contact with the Central American controllers South of the Cayman Islands. I flew this route often and was very familiar with the frequencies and procedures. I suspected the radios on the aircraft needed tuning. The next day I was deadheading back home on United and so I decided to tune into Channel 9. They had the same problem. No radio contact in the exact same vicinity. All position reports were broadcast "in the blind" with no acknowledgement. I really appreciate TCAS!!

I was recently on UAL139 ORD-SFO (744)....LOVED channel 9 it was soo clear and easy to hear the pilots talk...unlike the UAL 752 and A320 i was on before that flight..which was static and garbled

I love it ! you can learn so much about whats going on and when big turbulence hits you can hear the pilot talking to ATC's and he doesnt sound bothered at all by whats happening which in turn makes me feel alot better.

My last flight LAX-LHR i listened to Channel nine the entire time........forgot about the IFE. One of the few things i like about UA and it should be on every airliner.

I remember fly from DEN-JAC in an A319 and listening to channel 9 for the first time. It was great listening to ATC try and get the aircraft thought the various valleys before landing into Jackson Hole. I remember talking to the pilots and looking at the sectional and being astonished at the mountains surrounding the approach area to JAC and applauding the ATC and Pilots for getting us down safely. Too bad channel 9 isn't on DL or CO.

Cheers from BDL and BAF,  wave
