Your Opinions On Lufthansa And FRA/MUC?

Fri Aug 11, 2006 7:37 am

I am thinking of travelling LHR-FRA-BKK-MUC-LHR on Lufthansa (BKK-MUC on TG) this December.

What are your opinions of travelling Lufthansa; both Long Haul and short haul?

I have a possible option of flying either the A300 or A32S between LHR-MUC or FRA and vice versa, which do you recommend? Is the seating or service better on the AB6 or 32S?

How about FRA and MUC, are they nice airports to transfer at? I've heard MUC is a very nice airport!

How is LH's 744's?

I was also thinking of travelling on KLM, but a friend of mine (a travel agent) said "they've really gone downhill since Air France brought them," which made me laugh Big grin (Although I may still travel on KLM)

Quoting B742 (Thread starter):

They deliver reliable standard service; expect nothing special.

Attention on the TG-flight should be a bit (or more) higher ...

I would go for the AB6. Not too many of them in service anymore.
I like the 2+4+2 seating and the fact of twin-aisle: Makes boarding / deplaning faster (espcially compared to a A321 with only door 1L in use).

MUC is a great airport to transfer, if you stay in Terminal 2 which is exclusively used by Star Allianace and affiliates to LH.
At FRA you might need to transfer between concourses within T1; this might include some lenghty walking, but is something to consider only when being on a tight connection.
However, flying out of LHR, I would allow more than sufficient time to make transfer at any other airport.

How is LH's 744's?

Reliable. Medium comfort, no PTV.

KLM,

Only flown short-haul recently.
to my experience, they seem to be rising again after some low in service&attention during/after the takeover by AF.
P.S. Will fly them longhaul to IAH (BBJ) return from SFO (MD11) in C-class early next year (award ticket) Big grin

LH is in my opinion very reliable, but as HT stated, nothing special. The FAs are efficient, professional, very skilled, know what they're doing, I could also say friendly to some extent, but rather avoid smiling and are somehow robotic. But I have NEVER experienced them being unfriendly.

I would go for the AB6 between LHR and Germany, too. The service is the same as in their A32S aircraft, the seats are also of the same comfort level (more or less) and I always prefer flying a widebody to a narrowbody.

Their longhaul aircraft have the service mentioned above, but no PTVs, only mainscreen (ceiling mounted or drop-down LCDs on newer planes) IFE. I'm talking about economy class here.

I couldn't describe FRA as a very nice airport, but is also pretty efficient and easy for transfering (and VERY BIG) if there are not too many construction works going on requiring (lengthy) detours. MUC on the other hand (especially T2 as stated above) is very nice, new, modern and a joy to use.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'm also looking at a KL/CI combo which I've found for a very cheap price!

Has anyone experienced China Airlines?

So far LH is top of my list, they are offering cheap fares to BKK, I really want to try SAS or Swiss but there fares are very high compared to KL, AF, LH...

Can anyone else reccomend another Europe carrier into BKK (I realy want to avoid the Middle East as I've flown there many times  Smile)

a Collegue of mine is using them via AMS to BKK frequently, but he is not a person to get a reliable review of an airline's service from.

Relatives also have flown CI via AMS to BKK and didn't complain too much (which they usually tend to do). However they got "stranded" for a number of days (up to 2 weeks, IIRC) when trying to fly home earlier than expected in February/March several years ago (= high season in Thailand).

Personally I've flown CI only shorthaul HKG-BKK-HKG on MD11 and B744 and on both a/c seatpitch was very comfortable (4 years ago) even for my long legs.

Finnair is said to run rather extensive ops between HEL and BKK.

I would stay away from those (semi-)charter carriers like DE, LT and Corsair.

CI and BR offer good conditions (at least from Germany) in either Business-Class or some "Economy de Luxe" via AMS to BKK.
You can get a first impression on www.skyways.de/flug and select "Premium economy, Business & First" in field "Klasse wählen". Dates are in format DD.MM.YY

Have you have had a look at OS via VIE ?
Is OK still flying to BKK via PRG ?

Does QF still fly into BKK from LHR ?
From LHR: MH via KUL, SQ via SIN ?

Yes, a lot of flights between HEL and Thailand in winter.
In mid winter Finnair has two daily departures (MD-11) to BKK, plus B757 charters to Phuket, Utapao etc.
Next winter there are flights to Thailand also from OUL in Northern-Finland, for the first time.

Also Air Finland (B757) and TUIfly Nordic (B767, B747) have charters from HEL to Thailand.
