Avoiding A Transfer In The UK?

Fri Aug 11, 2006 12:37 pm

I'll avoid a UK transfer at all cost as long as the restrictions are in effect. This leads me to the question... Would you or would you not avoid a transfer in the UK?

I'm English but been in Hong Kong for 19 years and can now say I would rather not be English. If these new No carry-on rules stay I will not be going back to the UK..... maybe go to another city in Europe and meet family there.

Now its like the USA... I can't be bothered to go there either with all the crap at customs, immigration. Not to mention the dangerous "planespotting" thing. Flying was fun once... now you get the idea you are the criminal.

This world is a mess, and there are countries I blame for this and they are NOT in the middle East or SW Asia...

Right now ... I on the one hand would and on the other wouldn't. Why?

Pro: Bringing no 'personal IFE' on board (I'm talking about magazines, books, the iPod) would be terrible. Would make for a boring flight.

Contra: I'm an airplanes freak. I travel a lot and most of my flights are your boring everyday check-in-security-passport-wait-board-wait-land... flights. When I work, it is similar, but I'm on the other side of the cabin (read: a FA). So travelling from (to) the UK right now would take care for 'some' excitement. Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't wanna do it everyday nor if I were on a tight schedule. Just to experience it, see all the chaos there, see what travelling with a plastic bag is like. I wouldn't bring any valuable electronics with me though.

Yes, I'm avoiding it. The inconvieniences caused by the new rules and congestion would not only annoy me, but the congestion might make me miss my connection!

Agreed! Someone needs a SPANKING, and they live in a large, light-coloured mansion.......

Apart from the fact that out of my homebase only LHR would qualify as a transfer point in the UK, I generally try to avoid connecting flights in LHR, especially if it includes transfers between T1&2 and either T3 or T4.

OTOH, I connected through LHR on 13-SEP-2001 = 2 days after 9/11 flying on BD from HAJ to GLA with return a few days later.
The flight connection center was closed; we had to pickup our luggage after the first leg and make a new check-in and queues at security were long, but we did make it on our flights ...
On the return this even included arriving at T1, check-in at T2, security check at T2 and then walking back airside to a gate at T1 ...
