A Nickname For The A380

Fri Aug 11, 2006 8:23 pm

Hi there,

has anybody heard proposals yet for a nickname for the A380? Within Lufthansa, I have heard "Molly" a few times, which I find quite fitting and funny. Any others?

Have a good day!

Whale.

Nothing negative about that. It actually looks like one.

The subject was discussed two or three times already.
Airbus decided not to give a name to the A380.
So far, the press has been using the "King" or the "Queen of the Skies", and the "Super Jumbo".
Some at a.net have nicknamed it "the WhaleJet".

I think this has been discussed at least in a dozens of threads. This thread should be transferred to "Polls and Prefs".

I've been waiting for someone to offer ""White Elephant" which I believe it is. Certainly it is also a marvelous bit of engineering, but I suspect that history will categorize it as a European L1011. Beautifully conceived and executed, but a financial disaster.

Let me offer another, better moniker: Albatross.

Before everyone starts telling me about projected sales, yada, yada, yada, I would point out that the 380 has cost Airbus more than Euros. It has cost them a termendous amount of effort that could have been used elsewhere more profitably. The loss of market share to the 787 will hurt them for years and ultimately cost more than the 380 will return to company coffers. Thus I resubmit: Albatross.

Albtraum is German for nightmare.

I doubt Boeing will like that. They've already named the 787 dreamliner, me thinks they might want to reserve the name nightmare for another of their aircraft... perhaps the 748i  Wink

Here's an idea (though probably unpopular here since many are asthetically shallow): call it what it is, "super jumbo jet" or "the superjumbo" as it will be the only for a while. In this case, I side with the media going for that title.

Airlines would call it whatever they wish, afterall they bought/will lease it?
