Alternatives From UK To USA Flights!

Mon Aug 14, 2006 3:38 am

Hi!

The last news that we all were aware of just got my attention regarding any options that we has passangers can have if we are thinking to travel to USA during the summer time. When I visited USA in 1998 and 2001 I used UK and BA to get there. I can say that I had excelent flights, excelent connections in both times, and I always considered UK/BA the best gateway to USA. Now I'm starting to think if this is still true. I probably will need to visit USA next October and I'm seriously considering flying to Canada, either Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and then connect to USA instead of getting a flight from UK or any other european airport direct to USA!!! I even think that Mexico could also be a great solution, taking in mind that I want to fly to California. I don't know what you think but can we really stand with all this fuzz???

Is this next october as in 2006 or 2007? I think going via the UK will be fine, the strict security will not be permanent.

You could try flying to Ireland and onto LAX with Aer Lingus. Their fares are usually quite cheap too!

Other options could be through CDG with AF, AMS with KL, FRA with LH or through EWR with CO.

Obviously these current extra measures are most certainly not sustainable. The bottlenecks they have caused at the security checkpoints bring us 10 steps backwards to something much less civillized.

I am sure that after they conduct adequate investigations on this particular incident involving the liquid 'cocktail' they will zero-in on exactly what to bring in and what not.

If this carries on, we will eventually end up flying naked and hence, no one will fly anymore. So If the airports dont take action, then most certainly expect the airlines to push for something sustainable!

Hi!

But if we want to look to a quite relax flight, still using carry-on luggage with no restrictions I think then flying from FRA, CDG, AMS to YYZ or YVR is certainly good, and then if you need to fly to any US airport most US airlines or canadian airlines will connect you from these canadian airports, and I'm sure towns like Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton have direct flights to USA....and still....there are no restrictions to carry-on luggage from USA to Canada right?

There are plenty of European airports from where you can fly to US and Canada. FRA, CDG, AMS etc. Here in Zurich we have flights to JFK/EWR (5 daily), BOS, IAD, ORD, LAX, MIA, YUL, YYZ, ATL, DFW. Why then fly via LHR, I always avoided this like hell.

Well, as far as I know, the FAA will not allow any liquids on US flights:

Quote:
  • No liquids or gels of any kind will be permitted in carry on baggage. such items must be in checked baggage. This includes all beverages, shampoo, sun tan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.

Exceptions: Baby formula and medicines, which must be presented for inspection at the checkpoint.

  • Beverages purchased in the boarding area, beyond the checkpoint, must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted onboard the aircraft.

So really, you're not gaining anything by flying through Canada!

I personally think you are worrying a bit too much. Travel to the United States isn't that bad. Yes there are some extra procedures in place, but you won't avoid these by going through Canada, you will just have procedures split up. The United States requires extra forms for non US or Canadian citizens/residents.

All in all going via Canada won't do anything other than add time to your trip and probably make it more expensive. I can understand someone wanting to jump on the Eurostar and fly from CDG to the US instead of LHR, but you still can fly to the US from the UK. Unless you and everyone you are travelling with likes experiencing many new airports, there just isn't a good reason to go via continental Europe and Canada.

Furthermore, I don't recommend going through Mexico. You'll end up in the exact same immigration and customs in the US. If you go via Canada, you'll at least get to go through customs and immigrations before you board, and they tend to be pretty good.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

You can do the same thing in Ireland. It saves a lot of time after you arrive in the US and is particularly good if you have onward connections!

Vast numbers of UK passengers travel via AMS Schiphol to th US daily on dozens of high frequency destinations. Schiphol is promoted as Londons forth Airport. Many prefer the transfer at AMS over LHR.

LIS-LTN with U2 or LIS-LGW with TP/ZB

LGW-YYZ with Zoom

YYZ-LAX with AC/AA

Please keep in mind that CV990´s profile says "LIS" ...

fly to California

Where exactly are you intending to go to ?
Will you stay close by one of the 2 big gateways in California (LAX, SFO) or will you need to go to a place further away ? In the latter case, a transfer in places like YVR, PDX, SEA, DEN might be an option. Personally I would avoid transfers in places futher away, but that's my  twocents .

Out of LIS, any transfers in "Continental" Europe like CDG (not my favourite) / AMS / FRA / MUC / ZRH / CPH are a bit off-route for you.
MAD might have been an option, but there appear to be no non-stop flights to LAX and SFO out of MAD, leaving IB MAD-ORD as the only useful option  Sad

Do I need to point out to you that both CO and TP fly LIS - EWR and CO flies to PHL ? OTOH you will have a full trans-con flight to/from California afterwards ...  Sad

But there are no suitable flights out of LIS to DUB on EI to match with the flight to/from LAX.
