Your Best Flight Ever?

Wed Aug 16, 2006 11:01 pm

Hi Everyone:
I thought it'd be interesting to see what everyone's best flight ever was.

Internationally, UA FRA-IAD. I was in business, upper deck, service was top-notch, IFE was good - it was a blast.

Domestically, CO CLE-LAS, I was really stressed out because NW was blowing off my CLE-MSP flight, and I was worried I wouldn't make it to Portland. Got rebooked onto CO, GA was really friendly, cleared my upgrade (silver elite), there was a good cold plate, friendly atmosphere in F cabin, and a wonderful FA who topped off drinks every 10 minutes.

The CTA Caravelle back in 1989 GVA-TLV, all the SR B743 flight I made ZRH-ATL, and my latest over-the-pond LH 343 C Class experience Big grin

It's not about AIRBUS. it's not about BOEING. It's all about the beauty of FLYING.

My best flights were MAN-KUL. Was able to spread out a bit and slept most of it.

AKL-ADL Plane was not full so I had three seats to myself and dad sat in the row behind so he had the same room, and it was an easy four hours flight home as well.

Pic of how empty it was.

Best flight? I'm not certain, but flying from ORD to MAN on New Year's Eve was pretty nice, the 763 was half empty, I was in the rearmost row, had two seats to myself. Because of the light load, I was able to spend a lot of time chatting with one of the F/As.

LHR-ICN last summer wasn't bad. My first flight on KE, which was very pleasant. Had a few class mates with me, and I had an aisle seat, towards the front of the cabin. Due to the proximity of the galley, the rows in front of mine only consisted of two seats, giving me practically unlimited legroom! Good food too, try the bibimbap.

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

One that comes to mind was an AS FAI-ANC around 1994, 95.

Often if the weather is clear you'll get a good look at Mt. McKinley. Sometimes the pilot will sort of loiter there a bit, apologizing for the few minutes delay.

One day we pulled up to the mountain and stopped for a look. We slowed and came down to about summit level. 20k or so. We circled around one way, broke off and came back around the other direction so the other side of the plane could get a good look too. We were below the summit when we turned for ANC.

Well the best service I have ever had was on RG MD11 from LAX - LIM - GRU

The smoothest flight was from DTW - LAS. My first time in First Class!

My longest flight was only five hours, so I've never had anything amazing.

That said, the best overall service I had was on a Delta MD-88 in April from PHX-ATL on a red-eye of all things.

Quite a few for me... but most memorable:

March 1996, Swiss Air BOS-PHL with only 30 pax on board (mostly my classmates) on a 747-357. Most pax coming from ZRH deplaned in BOS.

March 1998, Delta CVG-LAX flying First on MD-11. This plane was less than a month old, and it was configured for 3 classes. On this trip I flew all segments in First DCA-CVG (MD-80 N907DL), CVG-LAX (MD-11 N815DE), LAX-HNL (L-1011 N1739D), HNL-LAX (L-1011 N790DL), LAX-ATL (L-1011 N790DL), ATL-DCA (757 N614DL)... same trip I also flew several segments on Aloha to OGG and LIH and a helicopter ride around LIH... overall it was a great trip to Hawaii.

TYO to SYD on a QF 747-300 last September. Economy class as virtually empty to I had a whole row to myself to stretch out and sleep. There was only 15 or so people in my section also. The service from the QF flight attendants made it even better.  Smile If only all flights in economy were this good!

United/Singapore ORD-EWR-SIN In Raffles Class (by RoseFlyer Oct 17 2005 in Trip Reports)

Singapore Airlines Newark-Singapore on the A340-500 in Raffles Class. I loved that 18 hour flight. It left at 11pm, which was nice since they served a full dinner that I got to enjoy. I could relax, watch a movie, and enjoy the IFE. Then I slept for 12 hours. Rarely in life do I have time to do that. And then it was breakfast time and I got another full meal and played with the IFE some. We landed at 5am and I was ready to go. I felt no jetlag since it felt like I just got a longer than normal night's sleep. You rarely get enough time on a redeye to eat, sleep and then eat again and feel refreshed. They are just too short!

My usual best flight used to be NGO > GUM on JAL. Leave at 6pm and get into Guam at around midnight. Wake up the next morning to the sun on the beach  Wink

The flight was almost always about 75% capacity. After levelling off I'd move to an open row and push the seat all the way back. Have some wine with dinner, watch the movie, play some bingo (Resocha special) and I'd be asleep in no time.

Twice we were lucky enough to get seats in Row 1 going over, and Row 3 coming back. Gotta love those business class seats on a JAL 767.

Also since it was a flight coming out of Japan, everyone went through the visitors line at immigration. I was the only one that went to the line for US residents Big grin

My 2nd best flight of all time was last week, ORD > NRT. A 50% capacity flight, I asked for a bulkhead seat and got the whole row to myself. A little bumpy after coming out of ORD, but other than that it was smooth sailing. The food was great, the FAs were VERY pretty  sly  and extremely friendly. I sat facing one of their seats and we talked for a while. Didn't sleep much and the movies were the same I'd seen going over, but I didn't mind.  cloudnine

Good question. Longhaul:
Delta MD-11 FRA-ATL, summer of 1998 IIRC. 2 BizE seats for myself, and all the joys BizE offers, including my personal favorite, the Icecream Sunday with a waffle, hot chocolate sauce, and whipped cream  yummy . No turbulences, and excellent views of NYC, D.C., and downtown Atlanta.
Another candidate is a DL 763ER ATL-Somewhere in Europe flight, which offered EXCELLENT night views of pretty much the entire Eastern Seaboard, including CLT, DC, PHL, NYC and BOS. After that it was sleeping time, so only half the flight actually counts  Wink .

DBA 733 HAM-STR, December 24th, 2005. Very empty flight, so an entire row for myself, very friendly (and hot in the case of one blonde  Wink ) FA's, calm flight, and excellent pretzel bread  yummy .
