Mon Aug 21, 2006 12:34 am

Well I havent but I have flown FL in Buisness class. Just wondoring about what the planes were like, Service ECT. I have always avoided them in the past due to there safety issue.

Umm dude. where have you been? Valujet hasnt been around since they merged with Airtran. Which is one of the best LCC's out there.... Completely safe.

I'm guessing he's wondering if anybody flew ValuJet when it was called ValuJet.

I flew ValuJet back in 1993 when they were in existance. Flew FLL-St Pete on their MD80. Quick hop over the state of Florida...nothing out of the ordinary or special.

The slogan was "Good Times, Great Fares" and that pretty much sums up the ValuJet experience. I would compare it to the service of Southwest or the first PSA. Uniforms leaned more toward the casual side with dockers, polo shirts, sweaters, and turtle necks. An overall fun environment with on board games, contests, and prizes. Fares were generally lower than the majors. Free soft drinks and beer and wine for the typical cost.

The airplanes,.....what a hodge-podge. The first DC-9's to arrive on property came from Delta and for the longest time had the Delta orange and pink "Brady Bunch" interiors. Later DC-9's came from Turkish, Express ONE, Midway, SAS, and others. I remember they did have some standards about the condition of the planes that they bought as I had heard the old Eastern birds were not in good enough shape to purchase. There were several different interiors across the board (depending on where the airplane came from), but ValuJet eventually refurbished most of them in their own blue and magenta upholestry which looked quite nice.

Something else of interest that I have never seen anywhere else. If you were hired there during the early years, you had a training "grace period" and after that your co-workers voted if you could stay or not. I think they later did away with this program.

AirTran is a perfectly safe airline. With a completely unbiased opinion, I really do think FL is the best of the LCCs. AirTran is NOT Valujet, you cant really compare the two anymore, especially since weve done away with the DC-9. But when Valujet was around, they were a great little LCC.

Speaking strictly about Valujet (and not AirTran), I did once fly them SDF-ATL. It was an older DC-9 (all they had back then), on an originating flight (and the coffeemakers were not working). One thing I noticed was that the entire F/A crew wore mini-Maglight flashlights (2 AA-cell) in little holsters on their belts. I must admit it got me to briefly wondering if they had frequent black-outs in the cabin, as I'd never seen any airline do this--F/A flashlights were always kept in the F/A's bags. Made it into ATL just fine.

I flew AirTran DFW-ATL-BUF some years later (on a 717 both legs) and had a nice ride. I didn't notice the flashlights--maybe they were indeed specific to the previous DC-9 flights?  Wink

Yep,
January 1995 ATL-MCO
March 1995 MIA-ATL

They were all right. Friendly crews but old, run down aircraft.
You are now free to be sexually harassed and then terminated for filing a complaint--Southwest Airlines to me.

ValuJet? My goodness, yes. I flew on them CMH-ATL-FLL and back- four flights, two flights each way. All DC9s. Ahhh, good memories, ValuJet.
