Flying For Fun To Come Right Back Within 36 Hours

Mon Aug 21, 2006 4:53 pm

I know this is an old thread from 2005 but would like to see if any updates.

I did FAT - PHX - ABQ and back to go shopping at the Abercrombie there as they had my pants I just love there. As well as just being in the ABQ airport. One of my top 5!

I also did LAX - MIA - MAO and back to spend the day with my friend and get my load of Guarana back of course  Wink

I think the coolest trip I made was a one day round trip from FAI to LAX to hand carry some documents. First class all the way, window seat. I carried a book, my ticket, my package. I traveled alone. I was 15.

That successful trip spawned a bit of a courier career for me, and I made several trips the next few years to SEA, PDX, and lots to ANC. Same day round trips.

I had to do a mileage run to keep up my Silver Medallion status for DL last year.I did BDL-SLC-SEA-CVG-ATL-BDL. I was able to get on the MD-90 twice, and alas my only two times on an MD-90  frown . Anyway my company has me traveling to Europe a fair amount this year, so needless to say I won't need to do another run this year. However it was pretty funny to see the expression on the ticket agent's face when I checked in at BDL.

Cheers from BDL,  wave

JNB-HKG for shopping. Depart JNB around lunchtime Friday, arrive HKG Saturday morning, shop in a frenzied manner till evening, fly back late evening, arrive JNB 0600 Sunday. Better with a stopover in MRU on the Sunday, spend all day on the beach, fly back to JNB arriving midnight Sunday.

STN-BLK to go to Blackpool Pleasure Beach theme park.

Left my house at 3am, arrived home 1am the next day.

Cost me £30rtn on FR, not to shabby, and had I booked one day earlier, £15rtn.

In may of this year i flew DUB-CGN with germanwings which cost me 26 euro,
spent an hour in CGN then jumped on a train to dusseldorf, spent a few hours
on the viewing deck then caught the Aer Lingus flight back to DUB which cost
around 50 euro. I left my house at 9.30am and was back home by 10pm!

Oh I forgot my flight in March from SMF - LAX on WN. Went down for a night game of baseball and came back to SMF. My first time flying WN so I thought it was worth the shot.

I keep track of all the airline routes I have flown. In the past two years, I flew two routes that were being discontinued just for the fun of it, and so I could keep track of these routes that are no longer flown. I made some additional flights just for the fun of it to position myself to thse discontinued routes. I madethe following round trips in the span of 36 hours (the discontinues flights are nopted with an asterix):

On a Saturday in April 2005:
DL SNA-CVG B 757
DL CVG-CLE B 737
CO CLE-MCI EMB-145

The next morning:
ME MCI-SNA B 717 *

On a Friday in March 2006:
AA LGB-DFW MD-80 *
AA DFW-BOS MD-80
AE BOS-JFK EMB-145

The next morning:
AE JFK-DCA EMB-145
AA DCA-DFW MD-80
AA DFW-LGB MD-80*

On particular note, I flew with James Carville on the DCA-DFW route.

I actually used to fly for fun quite a bit when I was a kid. Now, as an adult, I can afford to add a vacation on to my flights, but some I did for fun within a day as a kid included:

ONT-PHX-SAN-LAX-ONT (The SAN-LAX portion was to fly Muse Air, which had just announced an upcoming name change to TranStar)

ONT-SJC-LAX-OAK-ONT (I was at LAX with these flights the morning of the same day the USAir flight collided with a commuter aircraft and slid off the runway)

RAL-LAX

ONT-BUR (I did with two other friends; it cost us 20 dollars each on Alaska Airlines)

ONT-SAN-LAX (The SAN-LAX flight was on a TWA L-1011, pretty cool for another 20 dollar ticket)

ONT-PHX-LAX-ONT
ONT - Southern California's Ontario!

Only once. HP/WN CMH-MDW-CMH for my 7th birthday. Flew to MDW on the first HP flight out, took the last WN flight back in.

I'd like to do day trips more often, though. I wanted to do B6 CMH-JFK-CMH on 10/3 for their inaugural flight, but my schedule won't allow it now...

IAH-DEN and back same day a few times for biz.
IAH-DCA and back same day 2 times for biz.
IAH-SFO out one evening & back the next afternoon, gone 30 hrs for wine run.
IAH-LAX turn for soup with friend when we could ride jumpseat, gone 8 hours.
IAH-EWR outbound noon and back next evening at 6pm for biz.

Looking at some of this that I am able to recall, sure looks insane to me but what fun.

Funny you should mention this....  Smile

Myself and fellow user Chris78cpr flew the following:

LHR-LAX VS007 07/04/04
LAX-LHR VS024 08/04/04

We fond an absolute bargain deal and it was worth nearly 11,000 miles to us to we did it! Big grin

Overall it was tiring, but a totally amazing time! As soon as we arrived in LA we went into Hollywood for dinner then the next day we went shooting at LAX with another a.net photographer and then headed home, it was great!  Smile

In march I flew...

CLT-DTW-MSP-LAX-DTW-MSP-CLT D95 753 753 753 752 D93

with a 4 hour layover in LAX. First class on three of the six segments. I was exhausted when I got back to CLT.

It's been a long time...1993. They flew 737-300s to MDW back then & I think later switched to CRJs/ERJs.

In the 80's and 90's:

DAL-TUL on WN, business, almost always day trips, more times than I can remember...if my boss went, it always had to be DFW-TUL on AA.

DAL-AUS-DAL on WN on business, lost count of those too. I did have lots of Rapid Rewards freebies in those days.

DAL-HOU-CRP and back on WN, many times, business and pleasure, most always an overnighter. A few DFW-CRP on AT7s.

DFW-SHV on AA/Eagle, some day trips, some overnighters.

Once got to fly the company's Hawker bizjet DAL-BDL once. Sooo awesome.

A friend of mine works for DL, so we've done alot of non-rev/buddy pass flights, just to say we did it, some day trips, some overnighters:

BNA-CVG-BNA (CRJ/FRJ)
BNA-ATL-IAH and back DL mainline (for Airliners convention)
BNA-MIA 763 Business Elite - nice; return FLL-ATL-BNA. (764/M80) Stuck in FLL eight hours waiting on available space, got on last flight out
BNA-LGA (CRJ)-shuttle bus to JFK-ATL (M11) ATL-BNA (M80)
BNA-ATL-CMH (757/757) For Airliners convention. CMH-LGA (ER4) LGA-BNA (CRJ)
BNA-ATL (757) ATL-LAS (763) LAS-LGB on B6 320, drive to LAX for Airliners convention. DL 763 LAX-CVG in Business Elite again. Stuck in CVG 12 hours/overnight unable to get on BNA flight. Finally took CVG-CHA (FRJ) and rented a car to drive back.

ALL FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Flying For Fun To Come Right Back Within 36 Ho

Fri Aug 25, 2006 3:49 am

Nearly every non-rev trip I've ever taken was a day trip (with the exception of the time I got bumped in BOS and had to crash there).

ATL-Washington D.C.-ATL (Both IAD [FL] and DCA [DL]) Quick daytrip to do some sightseeing

ATL-BOS-ATL (DL and FL) Lunch and exploring/sightseeing. One trip was just to go to the Samuel Adams Brewery.

ATL-MCO-JFK-ATL (DL) Just so I could fly two legs on a 777 (ATL-MCO and MCO-JFK). The JFK-ATL was on a 763 and all three legs were up in BusinessElite.
ATL-LGA-ATL (FL) Got bored on an off day and hopped the first flight to anywhere I go get onto and back that day (Flew up, got off of the plane, checked back in, got back on the a/c).

ATL-MSY-ATL (FL) Daytrip to do some drinking, gambling, and eating.

ATL-PDX-ATL (DL) I did this trip several times in preparations for a non-rev trip to the UK that never happened. More or less seeing how 8-10 hours on a plane would be like. Not bad because it was up in BusinessElite on an MD-11.

ATL-MCO-TLH-ATL (DL/OH) Was supposed to have been a repeat of the above mentioned ATL-MCO-JFK-ATL flight, but the loads on the flight out of JFK weren't looking so good (The previous time I lucked out as I was the only standby who was travelling alone and there was only 1 seat left onboard). Flying up to TLH was pretty much my only choice unless I wanted to stay @ MCO for another 8 hours (That was when the next flight to ATL that wasn't full was leaving.). I researched a number of options, but would get derailed at the flight back to ATL from that city as most of those flights were "not recommended" by the automated non-rev line. Flying in a Brasilia to TLH through the standard Florida summer afternoon storms was really fun.....

ATL-LAS-DFW-ATL (FL) This was for the recent A.net Meetup back in March. Flew into LAS on Friday night and left Sunday morning. I regret not taking the day off from work so I could have spent more time in Las Vegas instead of stuffing several days worth of fun into about 36 hours.

I wish UA flew mainline to MYR, that way you wouldn't be stuck in a smelly Saturn for 12 hours.

A number of times and for different reasons....

-LHR-BCN-AGP-BCN-LHR in BA Club Europe/IB Business Class in a day, found a pretty decent fare so did it three times. Left LHR at 8am and arrived back about 12hrs later. Not enough time to do much beyond sit outside in the Malags sunshine for an hour or so. Did it a couple of times during rainy November weekends to get away from Uni. BA Club Europe & IB Business: LHR-BCN-AGP-BCN-LHR (by Fbgdavidson Nov 15 2004 in Trip Reports)

-LGW-AMS-LGW in BA Club Europe - found a good fare. Decided I hadn't been to Amsterdam for a few years. Had a great day out with a friend and about 8hrs in Amsterdam, very pleasant! BA Club Europe: LGW-AMS-LGW (with Pictures) (by Fbgdavidson Sep 26 2005 in Trip Reports)

-LHR-TXL-LHR in BA CE - found a good fare again. Hadn't been to Berlin since I was small, booked a ticket and told me mother who wanted to come too! Left at 9am from LHR and had about 8hrs in Berlin before flying home. Did a repeat trip the following year BA Club Europe: LHR-TXL-LHR Aug 2004 (w/ Pics) (by Fbgdavidson Dec 3 2004 in Trip Reports)

-SOU-EDI-SOU on BA CitiExpress - Having been at University in Southampton and close to the airport I thought it was about time I flew from the place! Found a great price of £64 return up to Edinburgh for the day so went with a friend who thought the open bars in the lounges was amazing! He probably drank about £64 worth of booze  biggrin  For some added excitement we ended up circling over Southampton for an hour before it was declared too bad to land, this was after a go round and during our second approach. Ended up diverting to Birmingham and going back to Southampton on a coach. Quest For £100 Note: BA SOU-EDI-(SOU)BHX (w/ Pics) (by Fbgdavidson Jul 28 2005 in Trip Reports)

-LGW-JER-LGW in BA Club Europe - My brother was down in Jersey for the summer and hadn't seen him for a few months so hopped on down to see him for an overnight trip. BA First & Club Europe: IAD-JER-IAD (pics + Vids) (by Fbgdavidson Jul 27 2006 in Trip Reports)

PLH-BRS-DUB-BRS-PLH 14 hours.
BHX-BFS-STN-GLA-BHX 13 hours.
BHX-DUB-STN-GLA-BHX 12 hours.
BHX-EDI-BHX 12 hours.
BHX-DUB-BHX 9 hours.
MAH-BCN-LHR-(bus)-LGW-MAH 19 hours.

Slightly longer, but still just for a fun routing:

BHX-AMS-(train)-BRU-CPH-AMS-BHX 39 hours.
LHR-AMS-JFK-FCO-LHR 44 hours.
PLH-BRS-DUS-ZRH-GVA-LGW-NQY-PLH 60 hours.
BHX-DUB-SNN-LPL-BCN-LHR-MAN 40 hours.

I appologise to the environment for wasting jet fuel  embarrassed
