Your Advice: SkyTeam Carriers To Rome

Tue Aug 22, 2006 9:48 am

I have two upcoming trips to Rome this fall from MSN. The first is already booked on CO in BusinessFirst. The second trip was just scheduled, so I need to buy a ticket. I haven't flown CO to Europe in ages and need to buy the second ticket before I see how they are on the first trip. They certainly do have a generally-good reputation, and I had a fantastic experience with CO in first class to LAX last week (writing the trip report). With prices and connections being mostly the same, anyone have experience and recommend one over the other for their first/business class product? I'd like to stick with SkyTeam for frequent flyer (OnePass) purposes. Thanks for the advice!

Very recent reports from colleagues have all raved about CO's Business Class service between Europe and the US. I typically take DL but nothing much has changed there in the past 6 or 7 years that I can tell.

I've flown CO business first domestically a few years back and that was good. for international I'd try to get on air France business or First class... their new seats looks really nice!

so yeah I would try for Air France, they have a discount of up to 65% of business class. if that doesn't work then I'd go with continental... but definitely look into Air France First.

Since you'd prefer Skyteam, I would suggest either:

MSN-DTW-CDG-FCO and try AF C-class on A332 across the Pond...
MSN-DTW-AMS-FCO and try NW C-class on A333: AMS-FCO will either be C-class on AZ A319 or KL 734/738...

Alternately, you can also connect at MSP for the AMS connection ?!

As a Skyteam Elite myself, I would try and get on either Air France or KLM to Europe. However I realize KL may be a challenge for you.

1. Air France out of DTW, IAH, EWR to FCO via CDG
2. KLM out of IAH to FCO via AMS
3. Northwest out of DTW or EWR via AMS
4. Continental out of EWR
5. Alitalia our of EWR or JFK

Let me just leave you with this thought. I have flown both Continental BusinessFirst and Northwest WorldBusiness Class. I have my personal preference, but if you are already flying CO on one trip, you should really try Northwest out too.

Now that IAH comes into the picture (wonder why, since you depart from Madison/WI), you can fly the all C-class BBJ KL0664 IAH-AMS or KL0663 AMS-IAH...would be even better than C-class on KL/NW/CO  Smile

I wish we had flights to IAH...I love flying CO and wish we had more connection options on them. Logistically, my options are

MSN-DTW-AMS-FCO (NW/KL)
MSN-DTW-EWR-FCO (NW/CO)
MSN-DTW-CDG-FCO (NW/AF)
MSN-MSP-AMS-FCO (NW/KL)
MSN-ATL-FCO (DL)

Right now the CO ticket is the cheapest by about $1000 for business class, so price-wise, that's in the lead. Sucks flying out of MSN sometimes...gotta always fly somewhere in order to fly somewhere...

Also, it appears that the US government will be blocking a NW FA strike for the time being, so it is again safe to book NW. From what I have been told, NW WBC is quite nice. It may be possible, if you really look around, to find a mixed itenerary.

Well I guess if CO is the cheapest, no harm in sticking with that. However if the fare on NW changes through, give them a second look. Air France is not a bad option if you want to try an International carrier out. From personal experience, I would stay away from Delta, but that is just me.

Don't worry, we all do it from time to time. I have experienced my fair share of exotic routing as I live in Daytona Beach, just look at some of the ones I have done
MCO-DFW-SFO-HKG-SIN-BOM (AA/CX/QF)
DXB-AMS-IAH-MCO (KL/CO)
MCO-DTW-JFK-AMS-BOM (NW/KL)
BOM-KUL-TPE-LAX-EWR-MCO (MH/CO)

So next time you think MSN is a pain, just remember some of mine.
