Most Scenic Scheduled Flights?

Wed Aug 23, 2006 7:05 am

What are in your opinion the most scenic scheduled flights that one could take?

Let me just throw in some routes crossing the Alps, like Munich-Turin for example or Zurich-Milan and then some domestic routes in Greenland like Sondre Stromfjord to Godthab. Antananarivo-Milan was also a delight once, crossing the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar, the Kilimanjaro, Sahara, Mediterranean and then a beautiful approach into Malpensa.

Any flight that passes over the Grand Canyon (Example DFW-LAS/LAS-DFW). You really can get the scale of it from 30,000 feet.

Flying into LAS at night is pretty scenic to me. You're flying over the dark desert and then all of a sudden an explosion of light.

LAS-ANC was fantastic for me. Glaciers and snow capped mountains everywhere.

Flying into most of the Caribbean islands is usually pretty scenic, as well as Hawaii. Anything requiring you to fly over a large city is usually pretty nice as well.

On approach to NBG not too long ago, inbound leg and subsequent departure took us right over the city. Pretty interesting seeing how much damage is still there. Not aesthetically scenic, but an interesting flight.

FAT to SLC or DEN. Many flights provide a view of Yosemite Valley as they fly overhead. Sometimes you can make out the waterfalls.

Middle East/Europe to points in North America, flying over GREENLAND on a clear day. Absolutely spectacular. Also flying over the rockies into YVR. Obviously a sucker for snow-peaked mountain ranges.

Zurich to Venice is even better than the shorter Milan flight, as after crossing the Alps you get the stunning entry to Marco Polo over the lagoon, with your first glimpses of Venice to one side...

Miri to Mulu NP in Sarawak Borneo is stunning too, especially if you take the DHC6 which takes a very scenic approach.

I love LAX-CLD or LAX-SAN on the left side of the plane. You have a beautiful view of the coast all the way down. And since you're on a prop, you fly low. Same goes for flights up from LAX to OXR and SBA if you're sitting on the right side.

Daytime flights over the Andes are great.
Also, flying over Southeast Alaska is good.

I flew SEA-PDX in a UA turboprop this summer and it was gorgeous. The best part about it was that the flight was short, so you remained focused on the scenery the whole time. Also, since we were in a turboprop our elevation was not too high. There were tons of lush evergreen trees everywhere during the flight and tons of mountains and hills. At one point we flew really close to a snow-covered mountain.

Anybody here ever done Page AZ - Farmington NM on the Beech 1900? Undoubtedly some beautiful canyons and mesa, and probably a good view of Monument Valley, all from a relatively low, relatively slow aircraft.

I invite anyone to fly LIM-CUZ on a clear day. However, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, the Himalayas, Caribbean, any mountain range would be gorgeous. This thread is pretty subjective and any answer is correct.

On one of my more recent FCO-PHL flights we took an unusually norterly route up over
Greenland. Impressive. We then passed over Grandstone island and all those little Canadian islands. Another recent flight was ABQ-DEN on a clear day over the Colarado Rockies.

UA SFO to ANC Jul 15th 18.20.

Just magic. Glaciers. The Snow capped Mountains. And also just prior to the landing we were only just few feet high above Chugach Mountain ranges.

And also big thanks to weather gods to keep the weather clear for the entire trip as next morning it was drizzly.

I agree with all. But, for many years I did KLM's NRT-AMS flight which goes across most of Russia in daylight. Sitting on the right side of the plane affords terrific photo opportunities...mountains, huge lakes, rivers, vast areas with no signs of human life (except old gulags, no doubt).

although a basic flight, my flights from ORD/MDW-SFO were beautiful. over the Rockies, and just the landing at SFO is gorgeous in my opinion.

This would get my vote in the top 10 I've ever been on. Done it airlines and my own flying.

Any flight from SJO will always include very scenic places. You'll see lots of the jungle and sometimes of the major volcanoes in the area whenever you fly over Costa Rica.

Actually, you reversed the side to sit on, but you are totally correct.

I am a big fan of any southbound flight out of SEA (SEA-LAX particularly). If you are on the right, you get a great view of Mt. St. Helens. If you are on the left, you get to see the even more impressive Mt. Rainer.

Done similar....LAS-DEN,PAGE-DEN, and DEN-PHX hundreds of times by way of the Monument Valley, Durango, CO and Farmington,NM areas. Incredible scenry especially when you drop down to around 10,000ft from higher up.

Cheers

Landing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming has to be one of the most impressives scenry sights...with the Tetons to the west especially with the Grand Teton. My profile will show a photo of such.

I recently did MXP-FRA, which wasn't too bad. But the GVA-ZRH flight can be pretty good, although you don't get a ton of the alps. I can imagine that GVA-VIE or MUC and Salzburg or Insbruck must be pretty nice.

cheers.

These are my opinions from personal experience.

ANY flight over the South Island of New Zealand, the Sothern Alps and other ranges are awe-inspiring. Ditto most flights over the Andes, especially into/out of Santiago, Chile. Townsville to Cairns takes you over rainforests, islands and the Great Barrier Reef. Rio Santos Dumont to Sao Paulo with Sugar Loaf and beautiful beaches all the way down the coast. Flying over Greenland is amazing too. Internal flights in Fiji are great too as the planes are small and fly low over the islands. Flying over the Sahara is great too, be it in daylight or by moonlight.

There are others out there as well, but these flights have been truly memorable for me.

Vancouver (YVR) to Port Hardy (YZT) on Pacific Coastal (8P) with a Short 360 during Alaska cruiseship season. The 360 affords spectacular views due to it large windows, and generally operates between 1500-2000' for entire trip. From this altitude you can actually spot killer and humpback whales on their migratory runs, and take in the magnificent views of the Coastal Mountains...simply...AMAZING!!
You can't get there from here.

I once flew from Anchorage (via Cold Bay) on the former Reeve Aleutian Airlines (the Russians referred to it as "Revolultion" airlines) to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Sakhalin Island, and the flight stopped at Petropavlosk on the Kamchatka; the volcanoes and scenery were beautiful.

Bern- Lugano on Darwin Airline. A 20 minute hop over the Alps at low level, and a very dramatic approach into Lugano!

Antigua to St Kitts was pretty spectacular. Only about 15 mins flight. Low altitude and a cracking view of St Kitts, neighbouring Nevis, Antigua and the sparkling Caribbean.

What about MLE. On approach you get to see all the atolls with their perfect white sand beaches, the palm trees or sometimes the bungalows over the water. A paradise sight

A very scenic flight that I have taken that hasn't already been mentioned was SQ's EWR-SIN. We flew right over the North Pole nd had very scenic views of N. Canada and Greenland then flying southbound passing near Japan and the main coast of China before approaching SE Asia.

Cheers from BDL,  wave
