Flying The Ilushion 62

Tue Sep 05, 2006 9:29 am

Well up until recently I had been planning on trying to fly a DC10 somewhere, but its an aircraft I've already been on a couple of times, and my attention is being focused more and more on flying some Russian beasts instead. I did a search on this topic, but it didn't bring anything back.

Top of the list (as it is I expect for many) is to fly an Il62, so if there is anyone who has flown it recently with an airline that still flies them I'd be very grateful for information Smile

So far I have them as operating the following routes with Aeroflot/Domodedovo Airlines:

Moscow - Blagoveschensk
Moscow - Anadyr
Moscow - Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky
Moscow - Magadan

-Dalavia Far East airlines also operate the aircraft, but its difficult to find information out from their website.
-Vim airlines have only cargo versions left, if they are not all aready parked.
-Air Koryo has a few still flying, but its not a certainty that they will use the 62 on the Beijing to Pyonyang route.

There are a number of other airlines which have them, but again they are difficult to find out information about, or are no longer operational.

So, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions, I am open to all. I don't particular mind where I fly to, although my Russian isn't great, I'm sure I would be able to get by, and if anyone wanted to join me should a good route be found then your more than welcome.

Many thanks,

Dan Smile

I take it your spanish is sound....

Try Cubana. They're good for IL9 IL6 & Y42. From CCS you can get the latter two, from EZE the IL9. CUN gets the Y42 as well.

Lots of domestic carriers in the CIS still fly them. I flew one back in the 1970s from Lisbon to Frankfurt on an Aeroflot that originiated in Havana. Great flight, too bad you can't do that anymore.

We had a Cubana IL62 do a technical stop in Santa Maria (LPAZ) enroute from Santiago de Compostella to Havana. Might want to find out which travel agency in your country chartered it and combine it with a trip to Cuba.

This sounds as one could build an intinerary around it ...  Wink

From Europe: TP A313 from LIS and FNC to CCS; CU to HAV (optional: vacation and flights within Cuba),
return: Probably the same way, as there appear to be no nonstops between CUN and CCS (or do some hopping HAV - CUN - ??? - CCS )

amadeus lists the IL-62 on Wednesdays as CU1310/1311 (February 2007).

Well thats quite nice to know that it shall still be flying into next year. Thanks for the responses AerorobNZ and LPLAspotter, I had completely forgotten that Cubana still had them flying. Actually at the moment there are full holiday packages available to Varadero in Cuba, (including flights, hotel and food) for £209 all in. This seems like it could be a very tempting end to the summer!

Yes I've considered the 134, but they are more common then the Il62, so I would rather now go after the stuff which is going to be gone in a few years.

I'm planning a few flights on them myself, starting from the South of course. I'm getting 722,721,IL96 and hopefully an IL62

Why is that? What's wrong with Cubana in your opinion?

The TU-134 is disappearing in an incredible fast rate as well. It's the 154 that will be around for a little while longer, but 134 don't count on it.

Hey PlymSpotter:

Check out this video of the IL-62 in flight from the cockpit. It has to be the best video on fl350.com:

Enjoy it everyone!
