Sky Team & Star Alliance

Thu Sep 07, 2006 7:11 am

In order to bring a better service we´ve seen many airlines are joining. So which one do you think is best Sky Team or Star Alliance?

SkyTeam is the better of the two IMO. Ive flown using both the star alliance and skyteam, and skyteam seems to be more streamlined and easier to deal with.

I don't think you can generally say which one is better, but which one is better for an individual's needs. To me, Star is by far the best option. Living in NZ, we have connections with NZ, SQ, ANA, TG, Asiana - the best variety you can wish from such a remote place. Next for me would be OneWorld due to the QF links. In terms of SkyTeam only KE serves AKL/NZ, and they don't really have the network/connections that are best for me...

Although Star Alliance is bigger. i would have to say that Skyteam is the best in service. I mean before Delta joined it their service was terrible!. Not only that but Skyteam is picky in which they choose to let in their alliance. SKyteam keeps it easy and enjoyable. Almost all the flights i have ever been on have been on Skyteam.

It depends on where your travel takes you. For Asia, Star or oneworld are by far the best. For Europe and North America SkyTeam comes out on top. With CO and DL's large European presence, many destinations can be made with only one connection where it would take a double connection with Star or oneworld

It really depends on who you are and what you want out of an alliance. For me Star Alliance works much better. Skyteam serves the cities I fly to pretty well, but at least from the United States, they don't really offer first class. For someone who sometimes does fly first class, I appreciate that United and Lufthansa and other Star Alliance carriers still have first class. Skyteam isn't as good in that respect since Skyteam has very limited first class offerings. United just makes too much sense for me though for most flights, although it changes on a case by case basis.

Got it in one  checkmark

For me, the best Alliance is SkyTeam because I can fly them out of regional airports in the UK where I live and then connect through either EWR, AMS or CDG onto my final destination.

Not for long, Skyteam will have China Southern, they have aeroflot, which means that they will have the Asia part of russia covered, no alliance will have that covered, they also have Korean air, along with NW's network in Asia. thats a pretty strong network, and with Malaysia a likely future entrant, Skyteam is going to be a global power.

No other carrier will complete Skyteam's network hole in South East Asia and Australia/New Zealand other than MH. Not even China Sothern.

My prefered alliance is SkyTeam, but I agree with 9MMAR, there is a big gaps in it's network

If I had my own way I would welcome the following airlines into SkyTeam:
Kenya Airways - Already strong partners with KLM
Malaysia Airlines - The key to a future SkyTeam preasence in South Asia, parters with KLM
Garuda Indonesia - Also another key for SkyTeam in South Asia, again has a healthy relationship with MH
China Southern - A future airline for the alliance perhaps and with the Chinese economy booming, this could be a great asset for SkyTeam!
TAM - Although many have said TAM could go to Oneworld, I would love to see TAM in Skyteam oneday
Avianca - Rumoured to join SkyTeam in the future
China Airlines - Again rumoured to join SkyTeam in the future

Rob!

It seems to me that Skyteam is a joke compared to Star, especially in terms of premium carriers. While Star has SQ, TG, ANA, Asiana, LH, LX, SA, and NZ, Skyteam has AF, KE, and maybe Continental (but then I'd add UA to Star). I just don't see the comparison between the two.

I like to think on this topic like politics... I like to look at the individual and not at the party its representing, with that being said I do like one party much more then the other, but I look at every person/airline separate of its alliance.

So I would have to say that Oneworld is great because of the QF/BA/CX, I use QF alot. so oneworld has some of the most world renowned airlines

Star alliance has heaps of airlines, and some of them are great with alot of choices, so they pretty good.

Sky team has AF which is a plus in my book, but out of the 3 alliances they would be my least favourite.

Because I live in Copenhagen and are travelling a lot to Southeast Asia I must say Star. When I am travelling to BKK I can choose between SK, TG, LH, LX, AU, SQ (any forgotten?) All top carriers on launghaul, and there are competition between them, so at least one of them will have a good deal.

All joking aside, I agree it depends on your needs and where you live. I prefer star alliance because I utilize the airlines that belong to that network more than I do the Skyteam carriers. Even though I maybe biased to United, I still think that you really cant say that one is better than the other. Both have some of the worlds leading Airlines with premium service.

As many have said, it really depends on where and what airline you tend to fly. I live in Mexico, where maybe SkyTeam is a better option as AM is part of it, and CO, DL and NW fly here, but I have been an Advantage member quite sometime, and AA is the only airline that can realy get me home to Grenada easily, and AA basically flies where I need to fly, I am with OneWorld.

For me I aways have a laugh when I see 'Skyteam seamless travel' my experience has been they they forget the tread when putting the seams together. I've enjoyed Oneworld, haven't had that much experience with 'Star'

My choice: Skyteam.

Main reasons are that they are "big" where I fly from (AMS), and most of my trips are to the USA and with NW, DL and CO in Skyteam, they are my first choice (AS is also FB partner).

(the fact that I work for one of them, has something to do with it as well ! Big grin)

I like both of these pretty well, and much more than oneworld. The main reason I don't like oneworld is because of weird restrictions such as no AAdvantage miles on BA transatlantic, only 1/4 miles on BA (regardless of mileage program) when booking the cheapest fare class (most other airlines I'm familiar with have the cheapest fare class earn 100% of miles while more expensive tickest earn things like 150% etc). I like SkyTeam because I grew up in and still frequently fly to/from MSP and WorldPerks is pretty good, plus I fly the US domestically the most, and SkyTeam offers three options: NW, DL and CO. Star Alliance is nice because it's the largest in the world, plus I now live in PHX and thanks to the HP/US merger I now have a Star mileage program in the form of Dividend Miles. Thus far I've only earned Star miles on US (and carryover miles from HP last year) but in my future I'm sure I'll wind up on UA and other Star airlines. Between those two alliances, five of the six US legacy carriers are covered.

The most useful to me:

-OneWorld: Because I fly BOS-LHR every or every other month and am an AAdvantage Gold Member.

-Star Alliance: I go up to Canada a lot (I'm a Canadian) and visit Kingston (where most of my family lives), Ontario and AC is the only airline that fly's there.

-SkyTeam: Between 2000-2004 I used to fly to AMS every or every other month before flying to LHR. I also fly to ATL once/twice a year.

For me SkyTeam. After RG problems, Star presence in Brazil and South America is by far limited. SkyTeam does not keep a partner, but TAM provide connections to AF, and there are many flights out of Brazil with Sky Partners.
Also, as i'm moving to the US, with CO/DL, seems that they are my best choice.

It depends on the need of the individual customer. If living in a Star Alliance country such as Switzerland, South Africa, Singapore, Germany etc Star might be your choice. If you live in France, Czeck Rep., Russia or Netherlands, you might go for Sky Team. It also depends on the routes offered and what you need. For me, no doubt, it would be Star Alliance.

A profitable alliance does only have little advantage to a customer, or none. All alliances to have well established airlines and I feel like every alliance does have "good members" in most terms.

STAR ALLIANCE......

afterall Air Canada is the only major airline in Canada that is in one of the three alliances...

Looking at the above two posts it is more than apparent that geography can and will determine loyalty or use. I live in Salt Lake City where Delta is the predominant carrier, and SkyTeam. If I lived in Denver where UA is the predominant carrier my loyalties would be with Star Alliance. The USA is split up fairly well between all three, but smaller countries like Canada are going to be dominated by one or the other. If a Canadian frequent flyer wanted to go with someone other than AC/Star Alliance, than they would select a carrier with the best trans-border flight options like AA, DL or NW.
One also needs to ask if things would be better with two FF alliances rather than the present three. If it pared down to two, which one should be abolished and what remaining two alliances should carriers go with?

I prefer Oneworld because of convinience and Oneworld flys to all of the places I have been to and to where Im planning to fly. After that it would be star alliance because they have NZ and they are second convinient for me but skyteam would leave me stuck in Auckland so ill probably never fly them.

In my humble opinion, I think skyteam is a much better alliance than star, simply because of the airlines that comprise it. I only wish more quality airlines like EK would join the alliance.

It's unlikely that EK or the other mega-gulf carriers like EY and QR would join any airline alliance.

Let's just say that airline alliances are "too good" for them.

On the brightside, SkyTeam will have a presence in the Middle East soon. MEA will be joining as an associate member next year.
