Largest Airport Terminal In The World

Thu Sep 07, 2006 3:27 am

To copy the other thread but this one for airport terminals.
I was in Hong Kong recently flying JL and we parked at gate 45. I did not take the shuttle but decided to walk to immigration. I have been in many airports but this one is so big. Is it just me or HKG is the largest terminal in the world? That thing is the largest building I have ever seen. Larger than many malls or convention centres.

Currently the largest passenger terminal building is in Hong Kong (with 550,000 sq meters or 135.9 acres)

However, on Sept. 28 the new Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok will open with the largest single building and airport terminal (563,000 sq meters)

The airport with the largest terminal buildings area is Madrid with almost 1,000,000 sq meters. One of the terminals (T4) has 470,000 sq meters, another one (T4S) has 260,000 sq meters and the combined floor area of the T1, 2 and 3 has 250,000 sq meters.

An new terminal is under construction in Barcelona, due to open in 2008. The New South Terminal will have an area of 500,000 sq meters.

I have no idea what the square footage will be, but the new Terminal 3 under construction in Beijing looks enormous:

This has to be one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, terminals in the world. I believe it's scheduled to open in 2008 prior to the Beijing Olympics.

Yes it seems so according to Wikipedia (quoting):

Terminal 3 is currently under construction, and is expected to be completed by 2007. Far grander in size and scale than the existing terminals (would become arguably the largest single airport terminal building with 900,000 sq. meters in total floor area), it will feature five floors above ground and two underground. When completed, it will provide 66 more aerobridges or jetways--further complemented with remote parking bays which will bring the grand total of gates to 120 for the terminal alone. An additional runway is also projected to be constructed at that time. Upon completion, it is reported that passengers will be able to travel from the entrance of Terminal 3 to the farthest gate in less than 5 minutes.

Beijing International Airport, Beijing

Foster & Partners. Under construction, to be completed in late 2007. According to
the U.S. Embassy to China, the country will be building 108 new airports between 2004 and 2009, including what will be the world's largest: the Beijing International Airport, designed by Foster & Partners. Set to open at the end of 2007, in time for the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the airport terminal will cover more than one million square meters, giving it a bigger footprint than the Pentagon. It's designed to handle 43 million passengers a year initially and 55 million by 2015, figures that will probably push the new facility into the ranks of the top 10 busiest airports, going by the 2004 numbers from the Airports Council International. Given the scale and traffic, Foster & Partners focused on the traveler's experience, making sure that walking distances are short, for instance.

I'm sorry but I don't think that you've read the link I've placed above.

Here is another announcement:
http://www.dubaiairport.com/DIA/Engl...Airport+News/Jebel+Ali+Airport.htm

Quote:
ýThe airport will consist of a number of terminals, six parallel runways, a large area for cargo and ýtwo main entrances. When completed, the airport will have the capacity to handle 120 million ýpassengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. All facilities will be equipped to handle new ýgeneration aircraft including the A380.ý

In other words: the new Dubai airport will have more than the double capacity of the one in Beijing will have in 2015!

KIX has the LONGEST airport terminal, measuring over a mile in lenght! Now that is an amazing engineering feat.

Was there recently myself and the terminal just seems to go on for ever, as
far as i can remember it holds the record for being the worlds largest enclosed
space/biggest floorspace in a building i think??

I did read your link.
I'm sure that's true, but the topic is which airport has the largest terminal
(and I assume under one roof, not several buildings).
At over 1,000,000 sq meters (under one roof) Beijing is quite large.

Now according to the Guiness book the longest Terminalis Hongkong.

But if UA772IAD is right this isn't correct.

With the footprint you quoted for Beijing this would almost double that of HKG and therefore I suspect the lenght will be accordingly longer.

Word. I did a report in Japanese for my class about the airport, and the initial problems it had. There was a TLC special that showed technicians actually running the jacks to lift it up.

^^ I saw that program too, just awesome! These jacks are so strong that they can be able to keep the airport above the water level.
I think KIX has the longest single terminal in the world as what some of you said before.

The largest terminal facility in the U.S is that of Atlanta Hartsfield. Largest single terminal belonged to Denver I believe for the U.S. catagory.
In europe Madrids masterpiece is tops hands down! Magnificient.

That Y-split terminal at HKG is the largest in the world by square footage. As a matter of fact when it was first designed, Foster tried to emulate the shape of an airplane or to bring the design as close to possible as resembling aviation and flight. I think he did a pretty good job I say since many of you who has been there are amazed at its architecture.
Not to mention the same guy Norman Foster is designing the New Beijing Airport expansion for the games. The design is spectacular, he is the world's most famous modern architect and is responsible for the designs of other airports including Stansted. People say that the new Terminal at the Capital airport looks like a giant thong underwear..

I'm inclined to agree.

I was at hongkong a few weeks ago and it took me ages to walk from one side of the terminal to the other and I got lost walking in a straight line  Sad

I think the guiness book of records site could be wrong as well because it claims the cn tower in toronto, canada is the highest building in the world but I know that Taipei 101 is higher.

Terminal 5 will unfortuntely not be anywhere near as big as some of these other terminals already mentioned.

The roof area on the main building is about 68,000 sqm. There are then 5 floors with similar area underneath this. It is also only about 400m long which is about 1/4 of the length of KIX as previously shown here.

I dont understand why Hong Kong, Osaka, Bangkok etc have to build their airports so big then. Heathrow is the 3rd busiest airport in the world and is planning on getting bigger!! If it can get away with having a smallish terminal, why can't the ones in the Far East be smaller?

HKG for instance only has one (very) large terminal. The addition in LHR is T5, hence there is also T1-T4 (of which I believe one will be closed, right?), but they are separate structures.
Last flight: SAW-CPH on H9 on 02/11/09 - Next Flights: 23/12/09 CPH-AAL on QI, 30/12/09 CPH-LHR on SK, 19/01/10 CPH-CDG-

Actually, airport in many cities in asia has much higher growths than Europe or America because air traveling in asia become more and more mass-transportation. Every cities in asia are huge and we use 747-400 in a lot of domestic flights. For example, Bangkok to Phuket, Tokyo to Hiroshima, etc. In contrast, the domestic flight in the US are mostly by ERJ or 737.. huge different!
I believe in a decade to come, many airports in asia will become the top busiest airport.
I really wanna see whether the new Bangkok Airport would take some traffic away from Singapore in the area.

Oh, me too. I really hope that new BKK will steal some traffic from SIN. I personally think that new BKK would charge less landing fees and stuffs than SIN. I heard that EK will have their own new lounge at new BKK airport. Hope they will move all ASEAN-Australia routes to BKK.

And passengers would love to stopover in BKK rather than SIN. There are loads to do in BKK but not in SIN and it's much cheaper in BKK!!
Let's just blame it on yields.

Although I have had little to contribute, I've found this thread facinating.

Quite bluntly, LHR is underbuilt. T5 is, in my opinion, very overdue. The 3rd runway, was needed 15 years ago. Don't get me wrong, I love to visit London, but I cannot help but feel that London would have an even greater place in the world economy if LHR had been allowed to build the 3rd runway and T5 already and instead was working on T6.

I'm excited for the new BKK too. Personally, with ICN, SIN, BKK, Beijing, and other new "Asian hubs," the Japanese airports are going to need to step up to the plate and improve their hubs. I'm sorry, but the tranfer from NRT to HND is discouraging to non-Japanese speakers. I hope with the resolution of the runway issue at NRT (finally!), that they can build an impressive terminal allowing better domestic connections.  Smile

Does anyone have a link to the terminal plans for LAS2 or SAN2? those are the only new US airports that *might* be able to play in this "huge terminal" game.

Thanks,
Lightsaber

As a Thai guy, I would love people to visit my country more even there are a lot already. People definitely go to SIN for business but to Thailand for fun and culture. I think if people come on a business trip in asia, they would love to stop over in Thailand before they head back home. Well, lots of my european/american friends are like that.

Thats really confusing isn't a tower still a building, what qualifies as a building i thought it only had to have walls, a roof and a floor.

Well CN Tower is the tallest free standing structure. I guess technically its still a building, but for the purpose of the world's tallest building I guess it refers to a structure that is used for commercial or residential purposes.

Slightly OT but PureKiwi isnt your signature off the water bottle ads?  Wink Its still funny though

I always thought that ATL had the largest terminal, it is 5.6 million square feet, or 1.87 million square meters.
