Which Airport Has The Most 777 Movements?

Wed Sep 13, 2006 1:56 am

Does anyone know which airport has the most 777 movements? I know ATL has the most 717 and 767 movements, NRT has the most 747 movements, and I think I have heard that MIA has the most 757 movements. However, I don't remember hearing anything about the most 777 movements. Does anyone know which airport is it?

LHR comes to mind, considering BA alone already has 40+ 777 and they get a lot of UA and AA 777 from the US as well as 777 from Asia & Middle East.

While LHR and DXB are obviously high, I would think that SIN is probably the highest in movements. Not only does SQ have a very large 777 fleet, but they operate many of them on short routes with high frequency. This results in many movements. While LHR has a lot of 777s, most only visit the airport once in the day.

I have no idea how LHR compares with other airports for 777 movements. However on a typical weekday this summer there might have been around 144 777 movements at LHR (although this figure will vary on each day of the week). These movements are approximately made up as follows:

AI 4, AA 32, BA 64, BR 2, EK 8, JL 4, KQ 2, KU 4, MS 2, SV 4 and UA 18.

The BA figure might be lower than you might expect but remember that some of their 772s operate from LGW.

I'm betting on SIN too, with SQ being the world's largest 777-operator IIRC and many of them flying many short flights in a day. I'm also assuming that many Asian operators send 777s to SIN too due to high loads (CX, JL, KE)...

That means 16 round trips. Not too hard to fathom.

It is a pretty strong assumption that IAD, ORD and SFO all see a boat load of 777s, given that United owns over 50 and uses them on all kinds of runs.

Yup. A movement is either a landing or a takeoff.

In actual, technical ATC terms, a movement is anything done in the airspace of the ATC facility. That means a landing, takeoff, touch and go or over flight if that facility handles it.

You'll find ATL is tops for 717, 757 and 767 in the USA anyway. MIA is probably 2nd for 757s, close with ORD.

In the USA...ORD would be top for 777s.

Interesting that Japan has six airports in the top twenty. Speaks for all the domestic use by JL & NH.

OK, you are definitely right about the 717 but HND could give ATL run for its money as top 767 movement airport.

Anybody have a list of top 767 movement airports?
Most likely the same Japanese airports will be up there too.

HND easily has the most 777 and 763 movements. Many forget that more than 50% of the domestic flying in Japan is done with widebody equipment.

Since the 744D was banned at Osaka Itami all of the 20-22 turns flown by JL and NH are with 772/773.

other Japanese airports that receive daily 777 service from HND:

Osaka/Kansai (KIX)
Sapporo/Chitose (CTS)
Okinawa/Naha (OKA)
Fukuoka (FUK)
Hakodate (HKD)
Kobe (UKB)
Okayama (OKJ)
Hiroshima (HIJ)
Matsuyama (MYJ)
Takamatsu (TAK)
Kumamoto (KMJ)
Kagoshima (KOJ)
Komatsu (KMQ)
Toyama (TOY)

I was at Hatton Cross tube station waiting for a ticket and I counted 4 777s in less than 6 minutes, so I automatically thought LHR would be the 777 capital of the world. However, those people stating SIN make a good point and I tend to side with them now. However, if you want the variety of companies that fly 777 then I'd go with LHR but if you ignore this then I'd go with SIN.

And, as far as 717 go, it's primarily the U.S. (16 of the top 20). ATL blows everyone away, with the obvious, HNL and MKE #2 and #3, respectively. Glad to see one of my favorite spots made the list at #20 - Ko Samui, Thailand thanks to Bangkok Airways.

So true. I had a short stay in NRT and did some spotting for bout 5 hours and almost every airline that flys into NRT flew in a 777. I couldn't beleive it. That morning I saw more 777 from carries other then JAL and ANA then anything else. Vietnam, Air France, Alitalia, Thai, Singapore,Korean,KLM and the list goes on. Its was cool though as we don't have too man at YYZ or atleast not yet.

I was suprised LHR was so high to be honest. The 777 doesn't dominate LHR by a long shot - or at least, you don't get that impression when you're down there. There are roughly 11 regular 777 operators, about 14 A340 operators and 17+ 744 operator. Although AA, UA, and BA send a lot of them here and we may see more airlines as some 773ERs are delivered.
