Continental Airlines: The Best US Airline?

Wed Sep 27, 2006 7:39 pm

I have flown only 2 US carriers: AA which was horrible, and DL which was average, but still disappointing.I heard that NW has a bad reputation too with their ageing fleet. When I look at all the US carriers(I am not talking the low cost), they all seem average or even below average, except maybe CO.I mean CO was a nice fleet and is always buying new planes:737NGs,764s,772s...and soon the 787.The interior of their a/c look great with PTVs on the long range a/c, which is far from being the case of DL and AA which only have PTVs on their 777s.Nevertheless, I don't know about the quality of service of CO.
I would like to have your comments
Thanks

Short Answer: Yes.

That is of course, an opinion . . . but an educated one. Having flown most every US carrier and having a VVFF status in several of them, I can attest to the superior quality of Continental Airlines. They still remember their reason for existing is the passenger on the plane . . .

Hi!

I flew in a few US airlines in the past, first TW ion 1989, then UA in 1998, US in 2001, HP in 2003 and CO in 2006. Has you can see the time limit is quite interesting, first the 80's, then pre 9/11, then low-cost and finnally the new reality. I have good memories of all the flights I did with these airlines, but my last trip with CO was nice, I flew 757-200ER's from LIS to EWR and back, and I flew 737-700 from EWR to BOG and back. It was a nice experience to fly CO, the food was good, the planes arein very good condition and the crew are also kind and very professional. The only issue I always have to come up is why the US airlines on transatlantic flights charge you for alcoholic drinks....I think this is still the remains of the 30's, is that right? I flew in european airlines and they always give you any drinks you want ( of course with moderation...) and I've never see a problem on that, so that's a disapointing lack indeed! But besides that CO was quite nice!

I flew them 6 times....They screwed up my first class seat (gave it to someone else, though it bought a first ticket). CO Lost my sisters reservation for a flight that I was booked on with her (both tickets were on the same reservation). Locked a baggage handler in the luggage hold-we had to turn around shortly before the runway when he was finally heard. Though I ultimately got to where I needed to go, safely, they aren't my number one choice by any means.

WORK HARD, FLY RIGHT!

I have been on way too many CO flights in the last 6 years, and that way too many is because I want to stay home more! Have seen quite a number of possible good/bad situtations happen, most of the time they handle things very professionally, very timely, make amends for inconviences, and are one of the most progressive carriers in crew training from what I see. Yes, I have had times when I was not happy with something but then I get off the plane in say TPA, see the airline across the terminal as I walk from the gat with all the people lined up in 3 groups, who knows how long the first in each line has been standing there to get a good seat or to be able to have the entire family sit together....I think, ya know what, we just had a person having a bad day or the weather wasn't the best but you won' see me change.

I love my upgrades, my extra miles for being Elite, my early boarding, priority luggage tags, the ease of booking flights and the fact I can go almost anyplace I want from IAH without stopping.
Any views shared are strictly my own and do not a represent those of any former employer.

I wouldn't call the A330's old, thats the only thing that NW flies to Paris and in about two weeks only A330's will be going to Europe. As for the DC-9's they are oddly enough more reliable then most newer planes, in fact they have the highest dispatch rate of all NW aircraft.....

I believe CO was recently awarded as the best in Customer Satisfaction (JD Power & Associates), but again, that is a general opinion of those surveyed.

Having flown CO I have to say no. I prefer US as the airline I fly alot and being an Airbus fan US better suits me but CO is a close runner up though.

With all your votes for CO here, no wonder I can't get on and non-rev!! Big grin
Seriously though, we all really appreciate you flying CO and we'll do our best to continue to give the best.

No airline is everything to all people. Any business that is as directly involved with the public as an airline is, is bound to piss-off somebody once in a while.
Looking at the big picture though. I think CO really tries the hardest to do the right thing.

United and America West are pretty good airlines compared to others. United/HP is my airline of choice and I always have great experience with them. Planes are in good shape and they still have IFE and food for longer flights. AA is definitely not what it used to be. I've had horrible experience with Delta and have never flown them since. Because of my location, flying CO is not a good option so I don't have experience with them but word is that its good. I have no idea about NW, don't fly much to the great lakes area.

I look at CO as a very good and consistent product. They seem to be able to retain good business-firendly staffing, keep updating their fleets, offer some food on longer domestic flights (like a hot sandwich, chips, cookies). They also seem to keep their aircraft clean inside and out. Their hub at EWR offers excellent connections to the world. They seem to aim for the business passenger, not so much Charles the Cheapie as to fares and service.
Their biggest flaw may that with EWR as one of the top hubs, if the weather gets stormy in the NY City area, then the limits on traffic at EWR can be a problem.

With the exception of YX, because I never flown them (yet), I have to agree that CO rules. They know why they're there-to be a service to the people. Their management makes sense, they have great service, and most importantly, THEY SERVE FOOD!!! Ok, I didn't really fly CO, but ExpressJet, but they're product is similar. I was surprised to see real food in front of me that was not a picture!

Continental is a very superior airline. I fly them out of IAH quite a bit. I have never had a bad experience with them. Compared to my other legacy airline flights, CO is definately the top dog.

Continental is great. They have a wonderful modern fleet and clean planes, good customer service, a great club and frequent flyer program, and nice terminal space in the hubs. Not to mention you still get food on almost every flight.

CO i have mixed feelings for
Flown twice on the 73NG once it was good, second time average.
I must admit I think UA's all around service, especially pond-hopping is superior, plus you get linked into EGLL on UA.
Thanks

CO probably has one of the best customer service in the US, the food is decent and the IFE is also acceptable. Only thing that needs to change are those horrible clip-on headphones! :P

CO's okay, they're my legacy carrier of choice right now. I wouldn't say they're that much better than anyone else, though, and I'm just as happy to fly B6.

And I have mixed feelings on the food - have to give them points for trying, but let's face it, it's not that good. You can get better in the terminal and just take it on board.
