Bike On The Plane

Fri Sep 29, 2006 3:37 am

Hello y'all,

This is my first topic and I want to ask you this....I have been travelling to the US with my (race)bicycle several times and travelled on UAL. The haven't charged me on transatlantic flights, but on domestic they ask USD 80,- one way....I think their service was good, they have taken good care of the bike all the way from Amsterdam to Hawaii and across the USA ! Next month I am taking the bike to Florida on Uni(TED)

Tell me about your experiences travelling with a bike on board and the costs you made. What airlines do you and don't you recommend.  Cool

I would go on to the websites of various airlines to see what their policies as to bicycles are, including how to pack it, weight/size penalties and so on.
Check with CO (Continental) as serve from AMS to EWR, with excellent connecting services to a number of Florida cities or you could also take KLM to EWR and then connect with CO to Florida as well.
AA I believe serves AMS to JFK, and you could take Jet Blue, one of our best LCC carriers, with good budget fares and very good on board services and based at JFK to Florida cities as well from there. You would have to check Jet Blue's website as to their luggage policies.

Thanks. I allready booked though. I was just wondering what I missed. I have a bikecase and I am saving miles on UAL. Since I flew to Hawaii vv. twice, I decided to fly them again instead of the skyteam partners you recommend. In fact I would prefer a KLM 777 or CO 764 above a lousy UAL 763 for their onboard service...

Took my bike on WS from YVR-YHM.

Simply packed the bike into a bike box - like what they are shipped to the store in - and brought it to the airport. Cost C$30 with no questions asked.
